I was just wondering if anyone owns the Jaguar XF, and if so could comment on their experience. From what I've read in reviews their technology is lagging a little for cars in this class. But I love the way they look both inside and out.

My other contender is the Mercedes E class but they're not as appealing to me looks wise - a tad boring, although their new interiors are much more lavish than even the 2016. And I know their tech stuff is at the top of the industry.

Thanks for your input on the XF.

Nit,

I don't have an XF, but did just get into an F-Pace, and I thought I would at least provide you with some input.

I did not get the top of the line F-Pace, but got one in the middle of the range - frankly it suits my purposes. I looked at the Mercedes and BMW offerings at this level and price point, and felt the Jag was a more comfortable ride, both in seat comfort and also ride comfort. With regard to the technology I opted for the mid level offerings, simply because the way the packages were offered, I did not want to pay for all of the optional technology ( for exampled parking and lane assist, which I don't want, to get an upgraded stereo) which I did want.

I believe Jag moves their package options up and down the line of offerings, so I will tell you that I do like, so far, how the electronics have worked so far - I have the Heads Up Display and like the navigation/gps directions showing up in the HUD, so I can see where I need to make turns. I will also say I do find it bit befuddling that I get the same turn by turn direction on the nav screen and also on the where the speedometer/tach are located (there is another screen there).

My biggest complaint with the technology is that it seems to take time to "spool up". For example, this morning, I turned on the car, and my XM did not load right away - so that means I cannot change the station until it does. One a rare occasion, the Bluetooth with the phone does not connect immediately, and the Bluetooth music, also takes time to "spool up".

Perhaps if I had opted for the upgraded sound system, along with the other package offerings, I would have gotten something better (?).

Beyond that, as I mentioned before, the Jag is more than comfortable, the fit and finish in my car is top notch and I enjoy/like the performance characteristics of the vehicle.

By and large, I am glad I purchased this vehicle, and I think Jag has come a long way, in part because they are held by the TaTa Organization, who have money to burn.

I think you would do well to take a long hard look at the XF over the comparable E Class. I share your thoughts and opinions on the E Class.

Thanks- useful info. I know the F pace won some sort of world car of the year award and it's supposed to handle exceptionally well. I like their looks also. My wife's car is an Acura RDX with every bell and whistle so I'm not looking for another SUV now. I'm also wondering about the Cadillac CTS, and throwing that into my XF, E class mix. I'm not fond of the BMW 5 series or Audis just for astetic reasons.

You are in a similar situation as me. I have an MDX that I'm hanging on to for snow, etc and now looking for something more fun to drive.

The XF is a gorgeous car, and one that I've looked at along with the Alfa Romeo Guilia. Ro's comments about the tech issues pretty much align with what I've read about Jaguar, you just have to decide if you can live with them.

In spite of their less than gorgeous aesthetics, I'm leaning Audi, but I'm also looking for a "gently" used vehicle right around the same price as a new XF or Guilia. If I were buying new, the 2018 XF would be near the top of my list.

I had a Mercedes E350 and really did not like it, slow and boring. Can't recommend a Benz. Many people say the mercedes has the extras included but then all the cars do today.
Now have a BMW 535i and a Infiniti M37 and really like both. The Infiniti is fast. Both come loaded with Navi system, multi-stereo unit with wifi interface cellphone/digital music,heads-up display, power all the way around etc.
Have a friend who has an Audi and loves it.
Hear great things about Alfa Guilia, here in CA they are priced below other comparable.
As for the Jags, from what I hear they have really improved the engine and drive-tran.

Was wondering if the delays in starting things like the XM, etc. are due to the car needing to "search" for the satellite. I have that from time to time with my GPS if I move it to a new location while it is off. It can take a few minutes for it to find "where" it is.

I test drove the new BMW 550ix M this weekend. Very fast car and fun to drive.

The E class is their luxury car, not their sports car. The E class is like butter. Very smooth, very quite, great acceleration for its size.

The C class is more comparable to the sports cars.

The BMW, overall, is a better driving machine but not as good of a rider.

I've got a friend that had the Jag and it wasn't good in snow. Just be careful, make sure you understand that these are (mostly) rear wheel drive cars. Get the the All Wheel Drive models if you live in the north.

MB will soon have a 63 AMG version of the E class that may be fun to drive. Otherwise I cannot get excited about the E. It is for retirees.

What does everyone think of the Porsche Panamera other that "expensive"!

my recommendation, in that class, is the Infinity Q50. Its a 5.0 engine and really moves.

have to say I also like the 2017 Continental (but haven't driven one):

The good news is that you have a bunch of great choices and will have a hard time going wrong. I do hope you will let us know what you decide.

Funny, we have an MDX as well. We really like that car.

I know I am biased re: the Audi, but I don't agree re: the aesthetics. I think the 7's in particular are really cool looking cars. I like the Panamera, though, which the Top Gear guys say is one of the ugliest cars they've seen. Maybe e I just have bad taste...

my lease expires in October. I am not seeing much out there that makes me want to get a new car.

Not that it hasn't been beaten to death here on this board (by me, mostly) - but you do know that a RWD car shod with proper snow / ice tires simply out-everythings an AWD sled with all-season tires... Mfrs know their dopey consumer-base without protest (or much thought) will shell-out thousands and thousands of extra $$$$ for AWD... most would do better to simply invest in the right tires... end of annual rant**

Thinking back to my teen years in the late '70's, it was annual thing every November....haul up the snows from the basement (no room in the garage) and swap out the summers for the winters. Amazing how we survived winter driving back then .

Except the winter/ice tires these days are much more than simple aggressive-tread like those H78-15 tires my dad had on his Olds Custom Cruiser

I'd love to have poll results of posters' auto spend/monthly gross over a 10 year span. I'm either doing something really wrong, or really right.

Amen. I enjoy these topics and Massimo's posts more than most, but even after reading thru the comments and making an annual pilgrimage to the NY Auto Show...I'm perfectly happy with my manual transmission 06 Civic. Probably will be for another 5 years at least.

Acura is finally losing the beak up front. The new TLX comes out next month. Much improved. I'd consider it as well.

I'm kinda satisfied with our '10 Honda Fit 5-speed (well, my wife drives the Fit) but I've just put $2k+ into it over the past 16mos... I miss the days when Honda was building the best cars for the masses.... they've lost their way biggly... and let's not even talk about the mess that Acura has been for the past decade

I don't want to be a dick - but that slippery Buick is a '76 ...
GM B and C body platforms used round sealed-beam headlamps (quads) through the MY1975

Yeah, shoulda looked at the image closer. I Googled 1975 LeSabre and this image popped up. But I know you are right - the old mans car had round headlamps.

I don't know if the redesign is out. When I drove it bad sight lines. Peppy and handled like a Porsche product. Rear end is Kardashian like, bulky. Electronics carry across the Porsche line, I don't use NAV but the stereo pops, and nice fit and finish to the interior. They had really aggressive factory programs as the car was not moving.

As you have probably read, the new E is a complete redesign and now ahead of the S from a technology aspect. I'd never buy a Jag new, depreciation plummet. Depreciation strikes hard.

Yeah I am probably going to go for a 2015-2016 with under 20k miles. I have my eye on a 15 E class, red, $38,000. It's got all the lane departure, blind spot and rear camera tech I need for now. I know the new loaded Es even have an autonomous driving mode, self parking, etc., but the price for their top of the line model new is beyond what I want to pay. In 2-3 years all cars will have it cheap. I still want to test drive the XF before deciding.

I checked on trends IIRC XF sales down about 40% YTD, you should have leverage on price.
Even better....... http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2017/05/april-2017-ytd-usa-passenger-car-sales-by-nameplate.html

Thoughts on the mazda3 hatch?

Previous gen (gen1) was a tidier, more-attractive package IMHO.... though the current Mazda3 hatch is pretty slick, just looks a bit bloated and overwrought compared to the clean Gen1. I love love love Mazda and put them on the mantel with Toyota/Honda... except they seem a bit more prone to the tinworm (important to those of us who prefer pre-owned rides and keep cars ling-term)... I owned a Protege5 until 8yrs ago when a Buick shortened it by about 6" ... loved it...

I am one of the fossils that still uses a shoulder-look with any lane-change... i can still hear my driver-ed teacher telling me how a proper shoulder-look will bail your ass out when you get sloppy and start relying on side-view-mirrors-only....

Over the years as wind-tunnels / drag necessitated smaller (shitty) side-view mirrors, I've resumed the shoulder-look every time... call me an old crotchedy man - but lane departure/blind spot/rear cameras is technology that encourages shitty driving imho

Last one is the VW GTI...

To this day i still double-take on Golfs, even the non-GTI examples.... just not comfortable buying a used turbo, particularly a VW blower... i owned a B3 Passat wagon with a VR6 that gave me huge boners when i drove it..l alas I had a few repair bills that were like a kick to the groin... not to mention one which involved a flat-bed trip not long after purchase... but i still loved it :)

I am intrigued by a 5cyl manual Jetta Sportwagen... simple and slow, but reliable... kinda like me

Thoughts on the mazda3 hatch?

The Mazda 3 is a great car and should be very reliable. The VW Golf and the new Civic hatch are arguably better, but more expensive. I also think the 3 is the best looking, if that matters.

The previous Mazda3 was the "smile" front. I haven't met anyone who liked the looks of that thing. You may be thinking of the one prior to that.
