Interesting tidbit ... Not sure if this is true or not, but I have no reason to doubt the host on ESPNU.

>> Over the weekend one segment of ESPNU Radio was discussing a CBS Poll of Top 10 Traditions in College Football. Making the list was WV singing of "Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver. .... The host of the ESPNU Radio segment stated that the John Denver song in which he refers to "West Virginia" , is actually referring to the western part of Virginia and not actually West Virginia the state.

If tOSU band can spell out Ohio and not Ohio State, then WVU students can certainly sing a song about western Virginia!

That isn't true but it is true that the guy that co-wrote it had never been to WV at the time and it's also true that some of the geographic features mentioned (Shendoah River and Blue Ridge Mountains) are more in VA than WV. The two co-writers other than Denver later went on to be in the Starland Vocal Band ("Afternoon Delight").

Now and then I'll be driving in my car flipping radio stations and I'll come on to ESPN radio and I'll think, let's see what they're talking about, and I listen a little bit and they're saying basically nothing and then it occurs to me, it's 7:30 on a Tuesday evening, there's no sports happening but these radio shows still have to go on, thus they're going to sit and blather pointlessly and make stuff up if they have to because there's a lot of time to fill.

I've come to the conclusion that 99% of stuff on sports talk shows is talking for the sake of talking. There are hundreds if not thousands of hours of sports talk radio, TV and internet shows going on today across the country. But there's just not that much meaningful stuff to talk about.

I totally agree. I tend to flip around. can not take much of sports talk radio. But I had my 13 year old in the car who is totally geeked for the start of college football and wanted me to turn on espnu because they are talking non stop about college football lately. They were not talking about WV. They were talking about a new top 10 poll released by CBS Sports which was the "Top 10 traditions in college football". I believe like #9 or #* was WV singing Country Roads... which led the co-host to make that comment. She said it very matter-of-factually, and even the other co-host commented that it was something he did not know..... I just assumed that if you say something with such conviction, you must know what you are saying.

I stopped listening to sports radio in November 2012 and haven't looked back. Not because of the Sandusky scandal but for the very reason you point out. And even when the talk is college football and specifically Penn State football, I am confident that I know much more about our team than the person babbling so it was totally pointless to listen.

Speaking of John Denver -- I never understood the Orioles playing Thank God I'm a Country Boy during the seventh inning stretch.

WVU is still the lowest ranked P5 school on that Forbes list in another thread. Maybe another good couch burning will give them a shove in the right direction.

I remember an interview with John Denver several years ago and I believe he mentioned that he came up with the song while driving through the western part of Maryland.

Well he said 'West Virginia' Coulda said 'western Virginia' Its on him if he didn't know his geography or the fifty states.

Besides, ain't much difference between western Va and WV.

Either way a great song about the virtues of country roads and the App Mountains. Beautiful area.

that is true. But it didn’t rhyme so on to Va. but Take me home Western Va didn’t rhyme either so cut it to West Va worked better
When they try to play that song at a Marshall game, many fans boo, aa unlike the people from Southern Pittsburgh, they know the song isn’t about WV!!
At Marshall ( the Thundering Herd) they play this.

Southern Pittsburgh?

You're drinking again, aren't you?

Stop that kind sir.

Ha!

Liverpool fans always post with class sir!

Oh wait! I forgot. You chose another trashy team. Post away then.

;)

You had your chance kind sir.

"Liverpool fans" and "class" in the same sentence? I'll let others comment. :D

Is PSU trending up or down in the last couple of Forbes lists?I don't know because I've been too busy making a lot of "dough" down here in Motown to keep up with these things!

Trending? Not sure. But PSU is 117th, WVU is 454th. Of the 64 P5 (excluding ND) schools, PSU is 25th (above the middle), WVU is 64th (dead last).

Wikipedia disagrees with that. And, I never take anything that talk radio says at face value, sports or otherwise.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads", also known as "Take Me Home" or "Country Roads", is a song written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver about the state of West Virginia.

As far as I am concred this applies to everybody and everything.
The world would be a lot better place with a lot more silence.

I listen to it off and on and used to listen to it religiously when I was on the road a lot more...they only discuss about 13 different teams for the most part....all other teams get either ignored or a passing comment. Even the callers talk about the same 13 teams. I listened on one trip I made that was 10 hours there and 10 hours back...I counted the number of different teams discussed in those 20 hours and it was 13....and every time I’ve listened since they have discussed those 13 teams. I don’t listen much any more.

It’s even worse hearing the PSU students do the same. At least there is logic behind orioles fans doing it.
