Cornell preview

...interesting that Cornell will compete in BOTH the Las Vegas and Southern

Scuffle Tournaments...

I don't see Cornell cracking the top 5 with that lineup. Way too many holes. Top 10 would be an accomplishment for them. They do have some great recruits in this year's senior class, though.

They do have their "Big 3", in Dean, Realbuto, and Palacio. Add Mark Grey coming back to 133 and I think they get close...

I don't buy Palacio making the finals at 157. I think 165 will be a meat-grinder this year. Don't see Realbuto making that final, either. Mark Grey? Much in common with his brother in terms of accomplishment at the NCAA level. Dean is close to a lock. Amazed that I saw him lose last year. The loss of Garrett is huge. I don't see them beating out VT, for example.

Really love watching Palacio. He's such an unorthodox wrestler, and imo, can beat anyone on a given day. Just glad he's healthy after last year. Re. a 5th place or better finish for Cornell (or anyone, for that matter), the 5th Place team had anywhere from 62 to 81 points the last 5 years...so, sure, Cornell has to perform, but it also matters how other teams do. My opinion, way early, is an easy top-10 finish, but top-5 will be challenging.

^^^ Just curious - is this Andy Matter?

How soon Dalton Macri is forgotten. He will come into his So year healthy (last year recovery from shoulder surg and a mid season ugly flu that ripped through the CU lineup). and with a nice NCAA under his belt. I will be very surprised if he doesn't AA this year.

So glad to have an actual wrestling discussion after today!

I like Macri a lot and think he could AA, but am less convinced he will. 125 looks incredibly deep.

I'm seeing 4 definite AA locks: Gilman, Tomasello, Peters, Dance. That leaves 4 spots for returning AAs Millhof, Youtsey, and Schram; and a host of other guys who were on the cusp (like Bresser, McGhee, Lambert, etc.). Plus Suriano and Piccinnini. Even if Millhof sits as rumored, that still leaves a lot of guys for 4 spots.

At first glance I'd probably call him a 7-12 guy. But you're closer to the Finger Lakes scene, maybe you're seeing something I'm not.

So I gotta ask: who do you think he finishes ahead of?

I thought Dance was a lock the last 2 years as well but that's why they wrestle. Would still bet $ he AA this year. Wasn't he bumping to 133?

No, he was my first wrestling idol when I started wrestling in PA high school.

Ah, yes - Matter was one of my favorites as well (which is why I asked!)

I remember Andy as a clinician at one of the wrestling camps (at the Naval Academy) I attended - he taught us the concept of "Uhmff Points": "Every time you make your opponent go "Uhmff!" - you are one step closer to breaking his will". He then proceeded to break down ways to put on a really punishing (but totally legal) ride.

Fun stuff!! ;-)

Love this! Gonna be a very fun advanced metric to run on zPain this year. And thinking of his opponents makes me wonder: what All-Americans last year do you think gave up the most Uhmff Points? Pantaleo's gotta be a contender.

It is interesting that college coaches say the toughest 2 weights to recruit are the bookends (125 & 285), and yet as you noted 125 looks really stacked this year. Other guys I'd include as "on the cusp" include Darian Cruz, Ethan Lizak, Zeke Moisey, and Ronnie Rios, and you could make a case for Josh Rodriguez and for Kris Williams.

Switching the focus a bit, Suriano is going to really face some conference battles. Gilman, Tomasello, Lambert, Lizak, Willaims and Youtsey will provide a great test, just within the B1G.

Is moisey gonna stay at 125?

I'm not sure Andy was the originator of all those punishing but legal holds. Back on that team Clyde Franz was the expert on punishing but legal holds. Wouldn't surprise me if Andy didn't learn some of those from Clyde!

They better hope so, because the other 125 options (including Devin Brown) have shown no signs of being quality D1 starters, and going up would cause other lineup issues.
Very true but I think brown hasn't even grown into 125

I love the fact that Nick will wrestle a tough schedule. The coaches will set the tone, and the freshman will embrace every match. Sounds like it's in his DNA anyway. Win or lose (remember, it's about "the process" and the guys learn from losses too), he won't be a true freshman by season's end. Really excited to see how this all plays out.

The process, indeed. Much like with Nico, Suriano is so self-motivated that the coaches will need to help him dial it back from time to time. Nice problem to have.

Thanks El-Jefe...worth repeating Coach's philosophy, which some don't really get.

Hats off to Rob Koll & Co. I don't know if you all know how much Cornell costs per year + THEY DON'T HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS!!! They've really done a great job with their wrestling program given a significant disadvantage to work around.

Just curious. Are you guys aware that Frantz beat Matter in the 1967 PIAA finals? They also became very good friends at Penn State.

My greatest recollection of Matter wasn't any of his college matches. It was the 1968 PIAA finals where he completely destroyed a kid from Bedford who had pinned almost all of his previous opponents. Matter pinned him somewhere around the 4 to 5 minute mark. I knew right then that he was going to be an exceptional college wrestler.

He told us a funny story at the 2011 NCAA championships where after one of his Penn State matches, a huge but friendly guy came over and shook his hand with an incredibly strong grip and said "Hi, remember me?" It was the same guy he had pinned in the state finals. Matter said his first thought was "I beat this guy???"

You also have to give credit to Andy Noel who is the Cornell AD. He hired Koll and was at one time the Cornell head coach. Having an AD who really knows wrestling is always a good thing.

Sorry EJ, I forgot to come back and look. Damned busy. I don't think he's top 4 naturally, but Dance....meh....he will make a usual mistake. But I digress. DM had a few mental mistakes last year that cost him wins. I don't see that again as he didn't repeat any of them later. He's stronger and faster this summer. He really struggled to get going with the shoulder last year and wrestled horribly for a few days with the same flu the let Dean get beat. That flu ripped through the CU lineup last year. It was ugly.

Macri beat Bresser and lost SV to Youtsey. I have no problem seeing him past or equal to the three returning you mention.....but maybe not. There's not enough separation in that group that I would include Macri among them.

Great story about Matter and the kid from Bedford--I think it was Sam something. I watched that PIAA final as well as the one where Frantz beat him. Interesting that Andy was a 1X PIAA champ and 2-time NCAA champ (should have been a 3x champ. His SO year he was beating a kid from Ok St in quarterfinals 10-0 and got pinned from the top position!)
