Crazy things you’ve done when you were maybe too old to do them?

Imagine doing it with 40 other cars around you on 36 degrees of oval banking (See Bristol, TN.). People who put NASCAR down as a sport should try it.

About a decade ago, our monthly American Society Highway Engineers (ASHE) meeting was held at a restaurant near the Pocono Racway. After an early dinner, the Society had set up a tour of the race facility, including getting in the Bush cars that were parked. At my weight today (pear shape size), I would not be able to enter the car. Had to enter thru the driver window.

After the tour, we were given a chance to drive our cars, in single file around the track. The pace car kept our speed at 65 -70, it was very difficult to keep the car on course entering, exiting and thru the steep banking. It WAS a FUN evening.

In addition to my Gigolo service, this old curmudgeon also offers Professional engineering service. In1990, I severely injured my back and legs (fell 20') while performing construction surveying for Lane Construction on the Blue Route in Plymouth Meeting.

After a couple of back operations in 90 & 91 and several years (4) of rehab the nerves in my legs were regenerated to about 85%.

My employer expressed to me that I will never be working on construction surveying again, the insurance company refused to cover me. My employer explained that I could help the company greatly if I got my Professional Engineering License (I already passed the first portion of the exams in 1974- EIT).

So, twenty years ago in 1997, at the age of 49, I took and passed my P.E., an it was the best thing that happened to me in my years of employment. Many of my professional sponsors offered me good luck, because they themselves doubted they would pass the exams at my age.

Funny, The Lord can with in mysterious ways.
Thanks for sharing, Step. You know how to stare down adversity... God Bless!!

Tried to watch some of the 500 today and, even as a pretty hardcore motorsport fan, their product is simply bad... it’s the MCDonalds of motorsport
Ditto. Nothing there any more. It's been forced to evolve into something that's just bland. Brings to mind what football may be like twenty or thirty years from now, what with the impact of CTE.

In 2015 at age 62, I was dropped off on a beach in Katmai National Park by a bush plane. Katmai is on the Alaskan peninsula west of Kodak Island. I spent 16 days sleeping in a tent by night and photographing Brown Bears by day. Maybe the best days of my life, certainly in contention.
That’s awesome. I always get hooked in when PBS is showing “Alone in the Wilderness”, about Dick Proeneke, who builds his own cabin, etc. I bet that yours was an amazing experience. I am jealous.

Took up Spartan racing, and any kind of obstacle course racing I can fit in my schedule at 50 and completed the Spartan ‘Trifecta’ the last 2 years. Finished the Killington Beast finishing 8th in my age group and well ahead of most men half my age. Still training hard, not sure what my plans are this year though. Have my first race in April but have not committed to anything yet.

Nothing that crazy, but riding the Maverick roller coaster at Cedar Point a couple of years ago made me think twice about some coasters (I had just turned 60). I'll still do Blue Streak, tho.

The last two times that I tried live wrestling (just in a practice setting) resulted in a trip to the orthopedic surgeon both times with the last time resulting in a surgery for a torn rotator cuff. No more live wrestling for me.

I just started Brazilian jiu-jitsu training at 50 years old! My main motivation is to get into shape, but it’s also something that I had considered trying when I was a lot younger. Well, I not getting any younger and the class schedule and location is a good fit for me.

Anyone else take up a hobby or do anything where they might have been considered too old?
I did about 75 miles of hiking in RMNP this summer including some pretty gnarly sections still covered with snow and ice where one slip was death or serious injury. In many areas the snow was so deep, the trail disappeared and you had to spend time navigating just to pick up the trail several hundred yards ahead.

That is so cool! Did you have a electric fence around your campsite?

Yes, camp could be destroyed without one. You could be in serious trouble if you loose your gear, bush planes can’t fly in bad weather so you could be unable to get help for days. Small planes grounded for three or four days in this area pretty common. A big storm came in I believe in 2010 grounded bush planes for ten days when I was there. Weather can be beautiful for long periods but when a big storm gets going in the water west of Kodak it can be nasty.

I was thinking solar power with battery storage. Thanks WyoLion
It’s a wilderness area so no mechanical allowed. The bush planes can land on the beach up to the high tide line but no farther. When Disney Nature was filming the “Bears” movie here they had a remote control camera on an electric cart. Park officials found out and restricted it to the beach below the high tide line. Generators are no go!

Water skiing, popped both hamstrings.
