Anyone remember??
At Iowa, PSU had 6-7 procedures penalties due to crowd noise, Iowa fans were branded as 12th men.
Years ago I recall PSU received a penalty at home because of excessive crowd noise, can anyone confirm

Definitely home game, might have been Michigan, my first reaction to biased Big Ten officiating, fostered my continuing hatred for the Big, Just didn't think it was that long ago.

Yup, 1993 vs Michigan.

"Welcome to the Big Ten."
Yes, I was at that game, in the student section. The crowd received a warning that the Michigan QB couldn't hear and if they didn't quiet down, PSU would be assessed a penalty. Everyone (including myself) was extremely confused because that is, nor has ever been, a rule in college football (or at any level of football, to the best of my knowledge).

I believe the story has taken on urban legend status. I have recently searched for proof and could not find a story, but I don't think we were ever penalized.

I don't think PSU was actually penalized but the warning was definitely issued. I was there.
Yea, I was there too. It's hard to recall the specifics, but I am surprised by how many people claim there was a penalty. There was a warning and it did quiet the crowd significantly, but I don't recall a penalty.

It was definitely a rule at one time...also a rule in the NFL at the same time. I was at a Giants-Rams game in the Meadowlands where the Referee stopped the game several times asking the crowd to quiet down, as the offense at that time was entitled to hear the QB's snap count. Of course, every time the Referee asked the crown to get quieter, it got louder until they realized that play wouldn't start until the Referee felt the offense could hear the QB.

Edit - here is another example from those days...

Same penalty that was assessed on PSU was assessed on Ohio State in one game. I couldn't believe it at the time either.
Wait. I thought OSU enjoyed privileged status in the B1G. Was the officiating crew publicly reprimanded?

Here's one of my favorite bad calls that benefited osu. Watch the second play from where I started the video. Disgusting!

It was Michigan in 1993. I am pretty sure there wasn't a penalty but a warning.

If I remember correctly from the 500 times it was brought up on the McAndrew board.
Yes they took a TO from us. I think there would have been a yardage penalty the next time.
Oddly enough the only other time I think it was called, in its way too long 2 year existence as a rule, was Michy against OSU.

Correct. From the video I posted above, here's the run down of the penalty and progression. We reached step 3.

Sorry, not urban legend. I was at the game. We were penalized. Joe came out on field to get crowd to be quieter or face more penalties.
