Dabo Swinney: If they want to 'professionalize' college athletics, 'maybe I'll go to the pros'

The contract extension Dabo Swinney just signed with Clemson was just $7 million short of nine figures. Yet, he still has an issue with “professionalizing” college sports.

The coach of the defending national champions has staunchly been against the idea of college football players getting paid. Now that Swinney has gotten paid more than any coach in college football history, his opinion on players getting a piece of the college football revenue pie apparently hasn’t changed either.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Swinney discussed and downplayed the idea that he could go back to Alabama, where he played and was an assistant, whenever Alabama coach Nick Saban hangs it up. He then said nothing was guaranteed when it came to the future of college football or his future at Clemson.

He’s trash. And so is his program. Entitlement? You coach f'n college football. F*ck off.

“As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me,” Swinney said four years ago. “I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

It is odd that Clemson has come out of nowhere to be the national power that’s replacing Bama (instead of Ohio St, Oklahoma, Texas, FSU, USC etc). If Dabo’s done it the right way then all credit to him but, other than 1981 under Danny Ford, they haven’t really been at this level (and IIRC they were caught cheating back then).

They deserve all the credit for what they have done in the CFP over the past few years. Can't take that away from them.
But, they play in arguably the weakest P5 conference which pretty much guarantees them no more than 1 loss - which gets them to the CFP.
They will be prohibitive favorites to go 12-0 and play a 3 or 4 loss team in their conference championship game to give them another appearance in the CFP in 2019.

Very true. The ACC is weak with FSU down and it’s a pretty easy route for Clemson each year.

I don’t see the big deal with Swinney getting paid. Nobody is stopping any of his players from graduating and getting into coaching so that they too can run a major college football program someday and get paid the big bucks. He took an average program over from Tommy Bowden and climbed the ladder each year to get where they’re at. Is that not allowed anymore? He didn’t walk into an already-made situation like Lincoln Riley did either

I certainly don't begrudge Dabo from getting paid. But he needs to get off the pommel when in comes to paying players. I mean you just gotta love this quote:

".... I wanted to make a commitment to the university. That's what the message of the contract was."

Yeah, that and $93mm dollars.

it's the rank hypocrisy of him not wanting the players to get paid that's my issue with him

Because it’s COLLEGE football. They’re being given the opportunity to earn a degree for free, which already puts them in a better position than millions of people, and an opportunity to play professionally where they do get paid. Nobody is forcing them to accept a scholarship or play college football. They don’t have to do it if they don’t like the terms and conditions.

No, it's because he's a doucebag.

No sense arguing this point...some on here want to see the only really good sport left get ruined.

Guys, gawd wants Clemson football to be great, and Dabo is the imperfect vehicle in which god is delivering their success. Oh and the steroids they give the players. Cause if 3 players randomly test positive you should definitely not test anybody else!

or maybe we just prefer sport without hypocrisy- at least the NFL is pretty much what it pretends to be
I’m not sure a sport where the people who do it for a living get paid and the people who don’t do it for a living don’t get paid would be considered hypocrisy.

The only reason why college football players don’t do it for a living is because they don’t get paid for their labor. It’s some type of circular logic to say that college football players don’t get paid so they can’t do what they do for a living, and they can’t do what they do for a living because they don’t get paid.

They’re there for three or four years...hardly a living. Unless now we’re advocating for 10-15 years at the same college. And they do it part time at best....let’s pay someone hundreds of thousands of dollars for a part time job...brilliant f’n economics.

College coaches should have to coach in the pros, where they can’t just buy players.
Calipari was my favorite, was a complete disaster when he couldn’t just buy players.
Wasn’t Saban the coach of the Dolphins. How did that go.
But imo calipari is the worst of all time.

This thread reads like a Pitt message board. Penn State must have a major in hypocracy.

Somehow I feel if Franklin gave the same quote, the headline would be Penn State's Franklin Planning to Coach in the NFL
