Dan Mayo reflects on his 1988 Loss in the NCAA finals

Wow.

My only complaint with this article is that it was so short; it could have expressed many more details on the process of how Alger and Mayo came to be so close.

Otherwise I'm stunned and impressed.

Also, Royce Alger is an awesome wrestler with one of the best senses of humor around.

Your right, its like where is the rest of the story...where is Paul Harvey when you need him.

Probably a lot of us still kick ourselves in the a** thinking back on past losses. I have coached a bunch of youth sports and coach high school track and field.

I tell kids about how my senior year of wrestling ended, neck injury in sectionals at the end of my best match of the season (majored the next year's regional runnerup) which resulted in finishing 4th and then losing first round of districts to the eventual champion in the worst athletic performance of my life in any sport at any age. Emotionally I did not recover from sectionals and it cost me districts and a legit shot at district/regional championship. I make sure I tell kids, when something goes bad, pick up the pieces and focus on the next race, event, match, etc.

Certainly it doesn't define us, but it does make you wonder. I feel better.

Part of accepting what happened, I realize that had I won, I probably wrestle D2/D3 somewhere and my life would be completely different...and I like my life as it is.
