Defense kept getting better last year. Impact of co-DC Tim Banks? *

Also, Parsons taking more snaps... Taylor getting comfortable.... Reid shaking off the rust.... etc

All of this. Along with other young players finding their way.

Reid definitely got better as the season went along. Early he was a liability it seemed. By the end, he was one of our best cover guys.

I hate to pee on your toes but someone needs to de-mystify the notion that the defense appeared to get better last season

a) D could not get much worse than what we were treated to for the tOSU and scUM contests (likewise some other conference games) ... D was alarmingly fetid at times
b) let’s review the quality of opponents for the final three B1G games: Rutgers, MD, and an anemic Wiscy... i wouldn't be so quick to hang my hat/dunce cap on those wins...

I do hope these pre-season prognosticators/ windbags are on to something as they foretell of great things for PSU D for this fall... but I will not be writing any checks until i see the money in the bank

Only expect them to get better. These young guys are special and most of them havent had much playing time.

it seems that in today's CFB that the "co-coordinator" roles have been created to appease/pay asst coaches what they want and/or provide backup when one jumps ship. as a manager it is not the easiest thing to manage co-leaders - not sure what others have experienced. if there was a co-lead i always thought it would be Sean Spencer, as he seems to be a key cog in the coaching team on D.

It will be interesting how the 2nd safety plays out Wade / Sutherland and the 2nd LB spot Simmons / Toney and the 2nd DL spot Mustipher / Shelton, these are key spots.

Don’t have the stats.
Have Int’s gone up?
What are the completion % nos.?
Grading safeties as well as CBs?
Would like to see more baiting and stunts by secondary.
There seems to be a feeling of better D or maybe due to those days of bend but don’t break?
IMO. Think that Coach Smith deserves some credit.
Could be Pry’s attacking style of D with its high risk vs reward have to do with numbers.

I agree especially at the DT position. Mustipher/Shelton/Hansard/Windsor

Some of the PSU defensive results in key measurements last year (among all P5 Teams):

Total Yards 21st
Tackles for Loss 3rd
Defensive Pass Efficiency 6th
Scoring Defense 17th

Only 26th best in Yards Allowed per Rush.... probably their poorest result (and far from being “bad”)

Bottom line:
If the Offense does its job, it’s highly likely PSU will be more than fine.

I agree the defense should be fine this year. One concern.... And I don’t care enough to analyze it, but my sense was that on average we played a longer list of mediocre, one-dimensional offenses with mediocre to poor QBs than normal last season. Appy State and OSU were exceptions and Michigan was pretty good, but the entire rest of the schedule including Kty was pretty unimpressive offensively. The QBs that we faced were mostly unimpressive. Maybe this year will shape up as more of the same?...

I'm not sure about any of that, but I do know for sure that anything bad is CJF's fault and anything good is because of somebody else. Or so it seems around here, anyway.

I’ll get off your lawn and sit down in front.
