Should these backups who are leading the team in defensive stats be starting? Should they be earning more reps? Should they be starting by end of season?

We've already implemented the freshman take over at RB with Singleton and Allen. Is the defense ready for the youth movement?

They are all fine where they are in the rotation right now. I think Carter would be the first guy to step in and start at linebacker but I doubt they move Sutherland.

Let's not put the cart before the horse.
Micah Parson's started one game as a freshman. One game. Micah Parsons.
Often times, in most any sport, players perform better serving a role. Starter/backup is 1990's stuff.
Football isn't played with 11 players anymore, more like 13-15....if your team is good anyhow.
Know your role.

I saw Izzard standing alongside JF during the game. He better get back in the starting DL rotation by the time UM rolls around. Preferably next week to get him comfortable. We are just too small on the DL except for Mustipher. CM looked effective running between the tackles, imagine what Corrum (sp) will do.

I loved what Sutton did yesterday, however, he was successful with a simple but powerful bull rush. That isn't happening right now against the big boys. In time, absolutely but not right now.

But that wasn’t happening for any of our other guys against CMU, so there’s that.

it’s great to see Sutton doing well in garbage time… but it’s still garbage time. I saw a couple reps where he looked either gassed or lost.

Well, so at best we agree that maybe they earn some more reps but stay where they are in the rotation?

I do have to say though, this freshman class has some players in it. These guys flashing so early is definitely a good sign for the future and for this team potentially getting better as the year goes on.

This. We need both Izzard and Smith Vilbert on the field vs Northwestern

Yep, and the position that I believe needed the most immediate help, other than the OL which is rarely impacted by true freshmen, is LB. And Carter seems like the most ready to play and biggest upside player among the true freshmen. The DE pass rush should get better as the season goes along with DDS getting more comfortable and Isaac continuing to round into form. Not to discount the RB's, but most that follow recruiting believed that the RB room was fine once Singleton and Allen made it to campus last January.

Not much to say about Wheatley other than he should be a first team B10 safety before his PSU career ends.

Was good to see Wallace show some flash on his 2 receptions yesterday, but I wa expecting more from the young WR's this season. Meiga is MIA and the true freshman are still a WIP. Clifford looks sure handed - maybe he is working his way up the depth chart. But right now PSU doesn't seem to have 3 reliable WR's, as KLS seems to be non-existent in some games.

It seems that Strange has become the 3rd reliable receiving option but I agree we would benefit with a 3rd WR stepping up consistently.

KLS needs to get the ball more. He is dangerous once he catches the ball but he is not targeted very often.
Possibly the answer but he has had the dropsies and I haven't watched enough film to know what percentage of the time he is getting open.

We had back ups in much of the time in the first half. Sometimes to our detriment but I believe that the coach has a good plan here. Carter is heads and shoulders our best lb but is still learning. The depth in the secondary is outstanding We are very good on d. We would be better with coziah which I think will come the thing that sticks out is positional speed. By the way 9 is really good

There are only so many balls to go around. Running game is improved so shouldn’t expect 25 completions a game anymore. And with the backs and tight ends getting their targets it’s tough to get three receivers more than a couple catches each.

Meiga has been a pure special teamer thus far. Wallace is the current #4 and Evans seems to be the speed guy coming in as a #5.

L. Clifford, Dottin, and Saunders round out the snaps, the latter 2 of which didn't dress yesterday.

We definitely need a deep threat to emerge or develop, but we might be a year away from that.

Clifford made a nice catch on his second reception. Might be a good possession receiver in the future
