An altered state
One if the most frustrating games I have ever seen. We were obviously the better team at almost every position; QB, backs, linemen, TE, even receivers, D line, D backs. Yet in was a one score game until very late. One fluke play and it could have been tied. No excuse for that.

Frustrating because Singleton had several almost TD runs in which he was barely tackled.

Frustrating that we are dominating with the running game and they insist on putting in Prebula.

Frustrating because our D looks incredible play after play……and gives up way too many third and very longs.

Frustrating with too many stupid penalties.

Frustrating we keep missing field goals.

Frustrating Drew….with that howitzer of an arm….keeps under throwing TD bombs.

Edit: frustrated that our D linemen were either held or tackled every other play.

If this team ever gets its act together it would be unstoppable. Got time to get it done. Will be joyous to watch them grow.

Really? How long have you been watching PSU football? Over a very long period of time, our offenses leave points all over the field (save 1994). I don't know what it is, but we repeatedly do not score nearly as much as we should based on stats. This was just another in a very long line of games like that.
Seems to be especially bad playing Iowa. Kick their asses all over the field but barely score any points. It shouldn't be this hard, but this is no different than it ever was.
So get ready for frustrating games against USC and OSU too.

The fluke play went in PSU's favor. ILL had 1st and goal from the 2 yd line until a bad snap, 2 penalties, and missed FG doomed them. It could have easily be 14-7 ILL at halftime and it would have been a nailbiter. Same thing with Singleton's almost fumble. He was clearly down but a TO there could have changed momentum.

Did you read my post? It was far more than just pints not scored.

And I should have added on more: frustrating watching our D line get held or tackled every other play.

I certainly observed the last 4 frustrations. The most frustrating of the 4 is converting 3rd and 16. That seems to happen all too often.

What I appreciated is that the team got stronger as the game went on.

I don't know if you watched any of the USC game. Man, their receivers are something. Going to be a tough match up.

You didn’t enjoy putting your tight end at quarterback when it’s 3rd and 7?

I said the same at the game, bu to be fair, he did the same in the first half and easily got the first down. I cheered it when it worked, but was pi$$ed at the game the second time in the second half.

My one word is hyphenated: loosey-goosey.

15 Vanover with 3rd costly unforced, undisciplined offsides this season. When is enough, enough?

Defensive penalties- gonna hurt down the road if we don't clean up the mess.

Odd Big Game James calls that kept Illini in the game- take the 3? Go on 4th? Invert the two and wash, rinse, repeat?

93- see 15 above. He has made good contact but the ball isn't going thru the goalposts. When is enough, ENOUGH? 94 kicked last XP but he has kicked in earlier games too.

The long conversion by Illinois on that screen play brought out my FRUSTRATION. Sent my little girl hound running to her hiding spot in the Laundry Room.

Glad we won. Happy that Fat Boy Brett learned what "White Out Energy" means...

Will be there next Saturday- can't wait.

Go State!

The one word I would say is disappointing. I really, really, really hate to say this, but I don't think Allar has IT. He's got all the physical tools you want in a QB, but under high stress situations I think his eyes get real big, leading to poor throws and bad decisions.

Holy cow I would not want to be your son.

That was the dumbest of dumb plays. After running it and handing off Illinois sold out to stop the run. I hated that call. I also think we should've kicked the FG. Yes, he probably would've missed that one too, but it was the smart play after botching 3rd down

Give Illinois credit, they played defense to stop explosive plays and it was successful with our help. Missed field goals and missed fourth down conversions left at least 9 points on the field.

This team has potential to be really good, but they need to continue to improve.

Agree. Two points; problems are self inflicted so fixable. The second is we had bad field position in the first half.

Your expectations are unrealistic obviously. Beat the 19th ranked team by two touchdowns and it could have been more with a better kicker and you’re disappointed. I think too many people are looking at this game as if Illinois is a bad team.

Bret is indeed a big fella... lol... For some reason, I hadn't noticed until last night. Even pointed it out to my wife.

I don't know about that. Last night the game plan was for him to be a game manager. He is not being asked to put the team on his shoulders. Why? Maybe as you say because AK and JF don't have 100% confidence in him being "the guy". I think that may be a part of it but you also have to consider we have a great running game with arguably the best tandem of RBs in the country. So for at least last night AK and CF or CF alone decided to ride that 2 headed monster with the addition of a steady diet to Warren and that was enough. Also, we don't have a great WR room so that factors in.

Nevertheless, if we have the ball with 2 or 3 minutes left at our own 25 and 1 TO and need a TD to win at USC could Allar engineer the game winning drive? I don't know, he has not shown he could do that to date.

Rewatching now. Some observations.

1. Allar missed a wide open Wallace on 1st down of our 2nd quarter missed fg drive. Dumped it off to Warren. Then 2 straight incompletes before the fg try. The final drive before the half, he throws a dart to Wallace and we look poised to run the field, but 2 incompletes to Warren and a sack take us to half.

I think this is where the happy feet Allar comes from. Upon rewatch, nothing egregious. We just stuck to running the ball and the FG trouble hurt the scoreboard.

2. I didn't like the Unsportsmanlike on Rojas (he was essentially in no man's land, WR ran into him with QB near LoS with run or pass threat). They returned the favor on the Intentional Grounding, but I didn't like it there either. Just unnecessary calls, even if they evened out.

3. Everybody loved the Carter deflected pass, but that's probably an INT if he doesn't touch it.

4. Lack of having faith in a FG kicker AND the misses really makes things look worse than they were. We intentionally chew clock, call a bunch of rushes, and miss 2 FGs then avoid another. Going back to the final TD drive, play calling gave Allar more early down passes mixed with the run.

5. Harris' coverage on the pick was slick. Shame Tracy made the block in the back.

6. DDS gets a lot of flak but he's a high motor, assignment football DE. The work he does generally doesn't make the stat sheet, but he's always working.

7. Carter is so versatile. His play gets taken for granted when he follows the play call, but teams are actively scheming to stop him. He was excellent as the spy vs Altmyer.

8. Offensive line had a night. TEs blocking their butts off. Impressive. Enough isn't said about how seamlessly we rotate between sets. 3 TEs, 6 OL, the gimmick plays that are a core part of the offense.

Regarding the Rojas penalty, you usually see that called when a receiver throws a block on an unsuspecting defensive player; in the NFL, it’s referred to as the Hines Ward rule. I guess that that rule also can be applied to defensive players hitting unsuspecting offensive players, but I don’t know.

In the end, when you do something like that, you have to be more subtle because football is legislating a lot of contact out of the game.

That was the issue: how do you be subtle when you weren't trying to hit the WR?

I get why it was called, but think it hinders defensive play. If the WR throws a block there and decleats Rojas, it may not get thrown.

Minkah Fitzpatrick got a 15 yard roughing penalty today which simply did not need to be called. After the game, he made a comment about how the game that he’s playing now is not the game that he grew up playing; it’s basically becoming a slightly rougher version of flag football, and I say that as someone who does not want to see players lower their helmets or crush receivers on uncatchable balls.

The TV crew referee said the rule can be applied to defensive as well as offensive players.
