Does Cheating Know No Limits?

The problems with Youth Sports - and there are many - have very little to do with the "youts"

There was a "documentary" done a couple years ago.....you can probably GOOGLE it....following the APTOS Little League team of California, as they made their way through the Little League "playoffs".

They ended up going all the way to Williamsport.

Watch that film....which focuses equally on the players, the coaches and the parents......and you will probably hesitate to ever have a kid play Little League - or at least be very careful about which "parents" you allow you kid to play for.

[EDIT: I think you should be able to link to it through here... http://www.pbs.org/smallball/af_cal_district.shtml ]

As I understand it, if Washington lost, and did not score at least 3 runs, they are in a 3 way tie and they advance on the tie-breaker. If they win, or lose and score at least 3, they do not advance but have to play Iowa to see who advances. What kind of nutty format is that?

Iowa won the playoff today and advanced.

I assume they would have the same record as another team if they had lost, and then the next tiebreaker would be runs scored, and they had 2 less than the other team, so they needed 3. That's pretty standard.

Maybe I'm mixed up on this. I could understand it they needed to score 3 in a loss to advance on the tiebreaker, but they scored none on purpose because if they had scored 3 they would have needed to win the extra game to advance. The rules rewarded them for being shut out, or scoring less than 3.

Washington would advance no matter what. They preferred to see NC advance over Iowa (apparently NC is a weaker team than Iowa). So they tanked the game to cause a 3-way tie, a scenario under which Washington and NC advanced, rather than Washington and Iowa. Understand?

A few years ago in the Summer Olympics two womens' badminton teams were trying to tank the same match since the loser would have had the easier subsequent game. It was obvious what was going on and was pathetic to watch. One or both were disqualified.

Yes, I do, and thank you.

Both were disqualified. That match was embarrassing.
