“I’m really proud of him,” said Gattis, who’s mentored Godwin for all three of seasons at Penn State, “and what he brought to this program.”

We do have a ton of depth at WR.

I think next year Blacknall and Charles will play a much bigger role in the offense. Godwin might be smart to enter the draft now. He may get fewer touches next season.

This is at least twice you've posted that Godwin will get fewer touches next season if he stays. What could possibly make you continue to think that? That's just stupid.

Blacknall had 6 catches in the Wisconsin game. Godwin had 3. James Franklin has stated that Irvin Charles is the best receiver he has ever coached. Either Blacknall and Charles play a more prominent role next year or they could transfer. There are only so many passes to go around. Hamilton and Tompkins want their share too. And Polk will be back from injury next year. He will want playing time. Finally, Hamler is a supposedly a phenom freshman next year who has probably been promised playing time. I think Godwin would be smart to enter the draft.

I am not certain a good pro scout evaluates a college receiver by the number of catches made. I suspect the watch how he runs routes, how he catches the ball, how he blocks both at the line of scrimmage and downfiled and how he turns catches into additional yards after catch. If they base it simply on number of catches made, I could do the job. Trust me, no NFL team wants me making draft day decisions for them.

If Godwin comes back, he will still get a ton of touches. I just don't think he's a first day draft pick. He probably should come back.

Godwin is a good solid receiver, but not sure if he is ready for the next level at this point.
What more is he gonna' do athletically, that he hasn't already done?

Very surprised if he comes back

Couldn't fault any kid in his position for leaving given the risks and $$$ at stake.

With Hamilton, Tompkins, Blacknall (assuming no other issues here), Charles, J. Johnson, Polk....not to mention Gesecki and the likes of Hamler, Hippenhammer and this position is in about as good of a condition as it could be.

Give McSorely an off season to develop a bit more chemistry with Charles and Johnson and the sky is the limit for both of those guys given their size and athleticism.

It strikes me that Godwin is way more ready for the NFL, today, than Allen or Sickels are. That doesn't mean he should or shouldn't go this year. But he's way ahead of those other two guys to my amateur eyes.

The question to me for Godwin to determine whether or not he should come back isn't (and shouldn't be) whether he's a first round pick in 2017. The question is more whether he'll improve his stock for 2018 by coming back, and even if he will improve his stock whether that rise is worth the opportunity cost of missing a year of paychecks and a year towards his second contract.

My initial assessment is that Godwin's strengths are things that you typically see guys return to improve on - routes, hands, blocking, and overall technique - versus the his raw athletic traits. I'm just not sure what he has to gain by returning, and my initial opinion is that it's probably smarter for him to leave and start being paid for his craft.

I've seen Godwin listed as a 4th rounder. He'd have a great chance to make a roster. Tough decision for him.

Bingo

If he's truly a 4th rounder, then there is no reason not to go. I doubt he ever goes higher than the 4th round, since he isn't a really fast guy and won't get any faster.

That's what I'm thinking. Some guys are just never going to be first round draft picks. If you have the choice between being a fourth round pick in 2017 and a third round pick in 2018, I'm not sure if it's worth it to stay.

^^^Ding Ding Ding^^^

He's likely a midround pick this year or next year. He's not going to go from an upper 4.5 or 4.6 to 4.3 or 4.4 by coming back next year. Godwin is a very solid all-around receiver who will make plays on the next level. Reminds me very much of Anquan Boldin when he came out but will be drafted lower because of a deep talent pool at the position.

If Godwin comes back he'll likely lead the team in receptions. Hamler is coming off a knee and will likely redshirt. Polk is a slot receiver and different type of receiver than Godwin.

Charles has yet to prove himself regardless of what potential he may have.

I sure hope no one here is going to call him stupid, if he decides to enjoy another year in Happy Valley, playing football with the family.

I have been told Godwin received a 5th rd grade. Have family who lives in Middletown, DE.
I thought there are only 3 possible grades - 1st round, 2nd round, stay in school. No?

Those are the only grades that are given out by the official NFL draft evaluation committee. There are, of course, other ways of receiving an honest, reliable assessment of a player's draft stock.

Well, here's a thought.
All of these kids we're talking about committed to PSU under the cloud of sanctions, reduced schollies, and the spectre of playing their entire career with a "young" team middling around the B1G trying to build back up. Well, they appear to be back and perhaps ahead of schedule. For all of these kids who took a chance on PSU, just rode an amazing season, and fell just short in the Rose Bowl, it would not be a stretch for anyone to want to come back and see if they can finish their CFB career in a special way. Time will tell, but I will not be surprised by anyone that chooses to come back.

Godwin is right up there with Engram and Robinson as the best ever to play the position at Penn State -- with a full year of eligibility left.

If he stays, I think he will be remembered as the greatest ever. I don't think there has ever been a PSU receiver who was so consistently excellent in every play of every game in which he participated.

I would assume Godwin is getting the NFL evaluation, but if he's not likely to be 2nd rounder, he might as well stay. He gets a chance to make AA, he gets one more year to be on this team, another chance to win a B10 title, and whatever his draft position is today, it will only be better.

As special as Godwin is, I suspect there are things he can improve -- perhaps he can improve his explosiveness. Maybe he can develop some new routes. Maybe he can develop some more ball-carrying moves and improve his YAC.

If he goes to the NFL, all we can do is salute. What a great football player, what a warrior. A tremendous, quiet, incredibly hard working leader.

What, the only way he gets fewer touches is if he gets injured and doesn't play. Dude will likely get more targets if he stays

I think he could be a 3rd rounder in 2018. For that reason I think he should return. As important as getting to the second contract is, you have have to be on a roster for 3 years first and there is a heck of a lot of job security in being a 3rd rounder over a 5th rounder. Add that up with a chance at something special, why not get 1 year free of a masters degree or go for a second undergrad.

Sometimes guys come back just because. Because they want to do something special, or they enjoy college.

1) May not be a lot of $$$ at stake. Only 1st and 2nders get significant signing bonus. Lower than that, you earn something around the NFL minimum until you prove yourself -- and then you get offered real money for your 2nd contract.

2) Charles and Johnson, just like Polk, have potential, but it's just potential at this point. If Godwin leaves, of course it's still a deep receivers group but there's no one remotely close to Godwin in work ethic and consistency and physical play. Godwin is really really special and he will leave a really big hole when he leaves.

Couldn't fault any kid in his position for leaving given the risks and $$$ at stake.

Bobby Engram, Freddie Scott, Allen Robinson, Jordan Norwood, Joe Jurevicius, OJ McDuffie, and Jimmy Cefalo were pretty good! I don't know that I would say that Godwin is better than those guys.

Good comp IMO is Hines Ward. Not the biggest or fastest guy, but tough as nails. Caught everything near him; hard to bring down. Great blocker.

If I recall, Hines Ward was a 5th rounder, and is now a semi-finalist for the Hall of Fame.

I don't know, I think Godwin is very special, catches just about everything thrown his way. Not a top end speed guy, but such a clutch player. I thought that diving catch against Minnesota was just about the most important play of the season.

Not sure he can get any better, and if he gets a second round grade or better, you best believe He Gone.

Pretty sure the same was said about Hamilton two years ago (that he wouldn't get fewer touches), but seems like he got less two last year and even less this year (though I could be wrong).
