I know that the current run of commits are the results of the work that the staff has done over the last 1.5+ years, but a week ago we were somewhat skeptical about the DT recruiting in the 2016 class, given the depth chart.

Now there are 2 solid DT commits and multiple new crystal ball predictions for Chavis, a JC DT target, for a commit to PSU.

And just like that it looks like the remaining DT targets may need to move quickly to get one of the remaining spots in the 2016 class. Wheeler, Dioubate, Jordan,.... Who will be next?

Could CJF be targeting 5 DT's in the class (4 freshman and 1 JC DT's)??

Given how Colon moved his announcement up, like I said in an earlier post, they must have been told first come first serve. I would guess this means spots are limited or maybe even already filled(the dreaded silent verbal lol). Either way, i take this as good news. The staff must feel they are in good shape and they are letting the recruits know it.

I think I'm in the minority, but I have no problem taking up to 10 DL this year

Simmons
Dwumfour
Colon

Dioubate
Chavis
Jordan
Wheeler
Cameron Brown

And of course Betiku or Gary. Round out the class with a WR, Ferns, maybe another OL

That would be a great way to build a Defensive front, but I'm looking for 2 LB's a WR, and another DB (Hamlin), and likely another TE as well. We did get some quality DE's last year.

I'm more and more convinced they are skipping WR all together. Obviously they would love to have Nixon or Diggs and I don't know what position they project Fuller at, but I think we miss on all of them. 10 DL is a possibility. I think Wheeler missed his chance. He was tweeting with Karlo last night and I am surprised he is not coming to the Friday night camp tonight or at least hasn't announced yet he is (I guess it could still happen).

I agree Dioubate and Gary have spots no matter who else commits. I would think the same goes for Ferns, Hamlin, and Betiku.

I have seen Brown listed as an OLB for us. I'm not sure if that's accurate or not though. Anyone know for sure?

Lastly all three over of those Chavis projections came from Rutger's "Insiders" so until a PSU analysts CBs him I'm not getting excited.

Interesting that Dwumfour is listed as a DE on Rivals commit list.

If you watch his videos, he often played DE on a three man line in HS. He's pretty quick for his size. You never know how a kid is going to fill out but he's is projected to be a DT but you never know. He has the tools to play DE depending how he shapes his body moving forward.

I don't really see the need at TE. Took Bowers and Holland last year, Dalton this year and at least 2 more years of Gesicki

Agree on WR- aim high, if not move on

Cam Brown is listed as 6'6 210- Unless we move to a 3-4 I cant see him staying at LB

What's the height/weight for this Chavis kid? And what J.C.??

Holland may end up at DE. CJF seems to place a priority on TE's, and I look for him to carry 5. Wilkerson and Carter are gone after this year and maybe Breneman after next yr. I still think we have a good chance at Angeline.

Toney is taller than most LB's but the staff is apparently recruiting him as a LB as well.

I think guys like Toney and Cam Brown illustrate the biggest challenge in recruiting. Youre taking 15-17 year old kids and projecting what they will develop into as 19-21 year old men.

And I think that difficulty speaks to recruiting best player available and letting the chips fall where they may

For the sake of discussion let's assume we get a committment from Dioubate. That would mean in 2016 we would have 7 DT's:
4th year - Parker Cothren, 3rd year - Antoine White, 2nd year - Windsor and Carter, 1st year, Colon, Dwomfour, Dioubate. The numbers for the frehsmen and redshirt FR (5) would be fine. If you add to that White in the redshirt SO class we will have 6 DT's between those three classes and that is acceptable IMHO (though perhaps not idea). What we will be lacking is depth in the junior and senior classes as we will have just Parker Cothren. That is why, IMO, a JUCO in this class makes sense. It gives us another older and hopefully more "developed" kid to provide depth for the next two seasons. But bringing in an excessive number fo freshmen strikes me as not a great idea unless you think at least a few of those guys can play multiple spots such as DT, DE, OG, etc....

It seems difficult but that's what college coaches do well.

I doubt any successful coach follows ur advice to let the chips fall where they may. A roster can have a number of players that are good football players but are not set at a position, or have poison flexibility. But every roster needs adequate numbers at each position, each body type. I still think CJF brings in a couple LB's in this class.

Couple points:

Redshirts and kids playing as true frosh will separate the numbers somewhat.

And if the staff feels this is a great yr for DT/DL talent, and their efforts to develop relationships that lead to commits have been very successful, then this may be the yr to load up.

For example, Lavar only has one guardianship of a freakish athletic DL, so CJF has to try and get the kid now.
