In last nights game, Gruden mentioned the reason why Murray was not getting good yardage or many negative yardage plays. While many other factors come into play, RB's, play calling, etc. Generally, the scheme presents situations for negative plays. I thought his commentary applies to PSU running game as well.
When the RB lines up next to the QB, he does not get the running start and ends up in negative yardage. We see this frequently even with Barkley.
The edge is compromised, causing the RB to get caught in the backfield. We have seen this often, against Army, OSU and others.
His comments were applicable to the shotgun / spread that Kelly runs and that we try to force this offensive scheme. The more I see and hear, the more I like the pro-style offense.
Last night, Murray had a good game, about 120 yards, but it was his 1st 100+ yard game of the leagues 2014 rushing leader.
