ESPN Doesn't care if you watch. If you don't like them...

...you must get rid of cable to impact them.

Forget the political component, here is a good analysis.
In a nutshell, if you have cable, you are sending as much as $84 a year to ESPN.

They are still affected by ratings though, no? In terms of what they can charge advertisers.

Been mentioned quite a bit, but they're hubris was Encyclopedia-Brittanicing the cord cutters, while completely missing the mark on what their core audience wanted to see, to say nothing of vastly overpaying for broadcast rights.

Yes re advertisers. Also gives them leverage when they negotiate carriage rates with cable companies.

Believe me, I am close. YoutubeTV has BigTenNetwork without ESPN ... its coming soon.

I know some Comcast Execs. This has been going on for years. Actually sports "cable contracts" are a primary cause of "our" ridiculous cable bills. Imagine if "major" sports all went to "pay per view" :)

Um, YouTube TV has ESPN, ESPN2 & ESPNEWS in their lineup. I don't know what your looking at but Disney will be getting your $ if you go the YouTube TV route.

SlingTV with their BLUE package doesn't seem to have ESPN.
All of the PSVUE streaming packages seem to carry ESPN.

So yea, good luck to cutting the cord and NOT giving money to ESPN.

I don't watch ESPN and i have cut the cable. That being said, i have PS Vue which has pretty much every ESPN station and it's only the 2nd tier package. So, not sure how cutting the cable really affects them when replaced with a streaming service.

You are correct, I just relooked this up. I believe the rights fees for streaming are less than $7/m you're currently paying through cable for ESPN. Still, like you said, what we really need is the ability for a la carte channel selections... I would rather PAY MORE per month, if it meant I would be able to shaft ESPN..

ESPN shafted themselves by paying 1.5 billion a year for the NBA. Who even watches the NBA?

They will pay over $7B in rights this year and another $1B for talent and production. All this while taking in less than $1B in subscriptions. I don't see $7B in advertising out there.

I don't follow your math. 88 million subscribers times $7/mo times 12 mos equals $7.3 billion in annual subscriber revenue. That means they need just over $1 billion in ad revenue to stay afloat.
