Now that ESPN is the sole provider of CFP coverage, they are also controlling the narrative....the whining about who gets in, the whining about the seeding etc., etc. It reminded me of an article about them written by the late Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated (back when SI had truly gifted writers in addition to Deford). Attached herewith is a link to the article for your perusal.

Just another issue with college football vs the pros. Can you imagine if Comcast or Disney controlled the NFL?

That's not the ESPN narrative--that's everyone's narrative
We all know changes are needed--why would you be concerned about them correctly pointing out flaws in the system
It will be fixed by 2026--thankfully. We earned a bye this year and should have had one. Oregon got completely screwed by the system. Yet the problem is ESPN for acknowledging issue (same issues everyone is acknowledging) not the real issues???
Get over your dislike of ESPN because of Paterno--it's making you say ridiculous things

Prophetic in 2009 and only more advanced than what Frank envisioned. Funny how he uses the example of financial and political news stations and papers cozying up to the institutions and people they report on. The tail wags the dog now with all forms of media.....im sure Frank and other journalists of their time would be disgraced by what their profession has become.

my dislike of ESPN's arrogance has nothing whatsoever to do with Paterno.

Arrogance?
What makes the arrogant?
You're complaining about them complaining about the seeding and who got in--which is what almost everyone is doing regardless of what ESPN is saying because it was a flawed system so...why did their honesty in this situation create this thread?
And why are you mad about FPI--it's a formula not an opinion,

Don’t mind him if you said you liked ESPN he would call you out on that - dude just wants to argue everything to post drivel and he will take the opposite side of whatever you say regardless - very juvenile.
Not at all--my stance on ESPN is consistent.
Just like many here hate Herbie for being biased toward Ohio State when the reality is, he's neutral, causing Ohio State fans to hate him for not being biased enough

Stop creating narratives you want to hear so you can get on your contrarian high horse like saying this is about Paterno. This is about ESPN and you pollute the thread with accusations. The article was written in 2009 and is what is being used as the basis to prove a point.

It is about Paterno--most things here are sadly even now. Do you want thread about how the SMU game should have been to honor him instead of focusing on this team? Would you like me to do a quick search for the words ESPN and Paterno and see how many results we get?
The article being written prior to that doesn't alter many here have a bias against ESPN because of Paterno

Look, if you wish to argue, go ahead. They drove the narrative IMO.

How? Everyone has been saying the same thing. Your bias is the issue
You're basically saying people are too dumb to realize Penn State and Texas should have had byes over teams they beat if not for ESPN

Oregon did not get screwed. If it was so obvious you and ESPN would not have waited for them to choke to complain. Osu started playing their best football in the playoffs. That is life. Changing the brackets does not guarantee the results will change. The results might be worse.

Oregon did get screwed which I said when we got to the CCG. I said all along its better to lose that game to avoid Ohio State. Oregon would have been the 4 seed with a far easier path had we beat them and we'd likely would have lost our first game against Ohio State.

The seeding MUST be changed. Texas and Penn State not receiving byes was as ridiculous as ASU and Boise getting g them.

The issue is the brackets were flawed. 1 should not be playing 6 in the second round while 3 & 4 are teams that are far worse.

OK, I think you're missing my point. It's not really about agreeing or disagreeing. I t's about ESPN exercising their influence

But...if they're right it's not a narrative
We all know they're right. Changes are coming and they're needed for the betterment of not only the sport but Penn State. Everything they're saying, which is basically the same thing everyone has said outside those affiliated with the weaker conference, is accurate. ESPN FOX CBS all have influence. They're spending billions to have it. When they're wrong complain...not when they're right.
Why complain if you agree with them? Thank them...

Again, we were ranked 4th...its absurd we didn't have a bye when Boise and ASU did. And we proved on the field it was absurd.

A great example of their influence that was pure bias was Pat McAfee convincing people Garrett Greene wasn't awful. There's lot of valid complaints. Them supporting the Canes all year or making Prime out to be more than he is as a coach.

Lando, it's too much my friend. You make a lot of good points. Unfortunately you also just like to argue, not sure if you see it and choose to, or you just don't see it. No matter, I send this as someone who has always been objective towards and offered defense where I saw it warranted. It felt like a little while back there was improvement in this area, but alas seems to have backslid to where it was previously.

These boards are supposed to be informative and enjoyable but your constant posting on everything detracts a great deal from that. Sometimes it is okay to just read and move on. Anyway, I will give it one more shot before I take action for my benefit. I hope this is helpful. I consider myself to be somewhat of a "chairman of the board", going back to 1993 and Plotit. (Yes, I realize McAndrew broke off a while back).

a narrative is a story. It may be right or wrong, true or false, fiction or nonfiction. They drive the narrative. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the premise

In this usage...narrative is the interpretation of facts used to drive an opinion or view that may not be objective.
Like you're frustrated with ESPN and post about it I'm just as frustrated by the narrative you and others are pushing regarding them. Herbie is great. Fowler is great. McAfee is merely there to cater to young fans. Corso and Howard are just there because of nostalgia. But ESPN should be pushing things as they're paying billions and want the best product. That's a good thing.

No problem. I just don't care for ESPN even when they are correct. Yes, it's my narrative and it might be right or wrong, true or false, fiction or non fiction. I get it when people get annoyed with Gus Johnson but they fondly remember "...the wizard........of Camelot"

ESPN is an extension of the mainstream woke/far left media. The only thing that saves them is that they actually have sporting events that people want to see. I don’t have a problem with their drivel regarding the playoff structure or ceding, because I don’t watch their commentary. The playoffs need tweaked, I get it, but I tend to agree that college football needs a commissioner, and if it happens, I certainly hope he or she has no ties to ESPN.

I watched a couple of ESPN talking heads analyze the OSU-Texas matchup. You would think Texas was favored by 2 touchdowns.

I only watch games on ESPN - I really can’t stand any of the dopes peddling their line of bullsh$t constantly - soo f’ing annoying.

That’s real funny, still hanging on to the dominance of the SEC even though Texas is in for one year.

No, they're not "far left"
I'm all for FBS being run by one person instead of conferences but they'll 100% have ties to ESPN--whether it would be Saban or Herbie or Luck or whomever. ESPN CBS and FOX are paying billions--everyone needs that money

Who? I've yet to see anyone on ESPN CBS or FOX pick Texas let alone act like they're favored by 14

Let me clarify. They didn't specifically pick Texas to win. In general terms, they portrayed Texas as an unstoppable machine. Again, it was the general flavor of their discussion. I thought it was very slanted.
Sports and fans. I would bet that there were Texas fans who watched the very segment you did and feel the exact opposite of what you did. It’s sports and being a fanatic about our favorite teams. We sometimes see and hear what we want to and don’t want to.

Perhaps. On Friday that whole thing will be resolved. Hopefully both ESPN and Matthew McConaughey will be left unhappy.

Correct--no one is picking Texas or acting like they're going to win by two touchdowns--the reality is, as an Ohio State fan you hear any positivity about Texas and things they can do to present challenges and acting as though Texas is an unstoppable machine. This is your bias--not their bias

Again--who?

Edit--honestly, ESPN is pretty much saying Ohio State is unstoppable right now--which I agree with

You would be in a better position to judge had you actually heard the discussion. As it is, your post is pure conjecture.

Hence--who said it so I can listen to it--not sure how many times I have to ask who you're accusing of this. Do you not know? Did you create the whole thing in your mind? I watch a ton of football content (TOO MUCH) and have not heard ANYONE with ANY network do what you said
So, who said it? When did you see it?
If they didn't predict Texas to win how are they acting as they're going to win by 2 TDs?
