ESPN

It is what it is. IMHO I think the Big Ten made a mistake in not selling a package of games to ESPN. I think they should have made a deal with them instead of NBC - even if it were fewer primetime football games on network TV (say 6-8 night games a year on ABC compared to every week on NBC), it would have been much better having football and basketball games on ESPN/ESPN2 compared to Peacock. Not having any presence on ESPN networks is less ideal for the Big Ten.

Hence--who said it so I can listen to it--not sure how many times I have to ask who you're accusing of this. Do you not know? Did you create the whole thing in your mind? I watch a ton of football content (TOO MUCH) and have not heard ANYONE with ANY network do what you said
So, who said it? When did you see it?
If they didn't predict Texas to win how are they acting as they're going to win by 2 TDs?
I do not watch ESPN generally. I only tuned in to get their take on the OSU-Texas matchup. I turned it off after about 5 minutes and didn't note who the analysts were. I was only pointing out ESPN's apparent bias in favor of the SEC. This is a sentiment that is widely shared outside of the SEC. You are making too much of it. Like I said, after Friday it will all be history.

Lando, it's too much my friend. You make a lot of good points. Unfortunately you also just like to argue, not sure if you see it and choose to, or you just don't see it. No matter, I send this as someone who has always been objective towards and offered defense where I saw it warranted. It felt like a little while back there was improvement in this area, but alas seems to have backslid to where it was previously.

These boards are supposed to be informative and enjoyable but your constant posting on everything detracts a great deal from that. Sometimes it is okay to just read and move on. Anyway, I will give it one more shot before I take action for my benefit. I hope this is helpful. I consider myself to be somewhat of a "chairman of the board", going back to 1993 and Plotit. (Yes, I realize McAndrew broke off a while back).

Ned, you're a class act here and always have been.

Because it wasn't true and you doubled down saying I was wrong. ESPN is a huge supporter of most of the Big Ten. Not just the SEC. No one is claiming Texas will win by 2 scores. You went in assuming a take and ignored what was actually said.

I have no issue with you--at all--obviously
But this isn't "arguing just to argue"
Me and the OP had a perfectly fine back and forth on the topic that ended appropriately
No one has to like ESPN but complain about valid things--not their statements on the flaws of the playoff or a Buckeyes fan that hates ESPN falsely claiming ESPN said Ohio State would lose by 2 TDs when all they're doing to praising all 4 teams left
They can't say "Texas has no chance"--they want people to watch

Now that ESPN is the sole provider of CFP coverage, they are also controlling the narrative....the whining about who gets in, the whining about the seeding etc., etc. It reminded me of an article about them written by the late Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated (back when SI had truly gifted writers in addition to Deford). Attached herewith is a link to the article for your perusal.

Interestingly enough.. SI had the opportunity to but ESPN many many years ago when the Channel was just staring out and their programming only had obscure sports , tractor pulls , etc… but SI turned down the opportunity partly through arrogance as they never thought the ESPN brand ever had a future.. I brought a consultant in to speak with my group once with the subject line being “ Don’t Be ESPN’d” which was all about not opening one’s eyes to competition and emerging brands and products around us…

Since then Sports Illustrated has folded their magazine and is only a shell of what it once was.. an icon for anyone loving sports and appreciating great writing along with stunning sports photography…they eventually became a sports tabloid in their later years.. sad… I would always wait with great anticipation after a Penn State win and our SI coming to the house on Tuesday following the weekend for a recap of the big games…

ESPN is an extension of the mainstream woke/far left media. The only thing that saves them is that they actually have sporting events that people want to see. I don’t have a problem with their drivel regarding the playoff structure or ceding, because I don’t watch their commentary. The playoffs need tweaked, I get it, but I tend to agree that college football needs a commissioner, and if it happens, I certainly hope he or she has no ties to ESPN.
They are absolutely part of the woke, left media. I find Van Pelt fairly interesting and like Verett. After that not much.

IIRC wasn’t there an attempt due an ESPN competitor channel by SI which quickly folded?

ESPN has a vested interest in the SEC and ACC, so they go out of their way to promote them over the B1G.

Great story, thanks

Sports Illustrated is a shell company. The brand was purchased and is being licensed out. The only thing left of any value at Sports Illustrated is the name. Same as Playboy. There is nothing left but the name.

Why watch it? I only watch Penn state football games on it and Penn State wrestling. Just turn it off.

If you want Penn State news there's some very decent podcast out there like the one with Justin King and Tom Hanrahan, sp.

There are plenty of decent commentators that you could find on YouTube that give you some decent information without turn on ESPN

That is part of the reason why ESPN has lost 50% of their customers.

He crossed that threshold long ago. Most threads aren’t worth opening after a few hours because of him and people that engage him.

I spend very little time here anymore…

If you want an example of the current literary excellence of SI, search for the recent article on Rodgers to the Titans by Evan Massey. It read like a junior high newsletter.

Yep, I just don't watch them. I just get confused when people complain about them all the time, Waite turned them on? If you notice this is a problem with a lot of legacy media. You can get new stories from other sources, and you could find a whole lot of other people to talk about football than the designated Talking Heads from these networks. Why does anyone pay attention to Finebaum? Or Herbstreit?

State of State or Locked on Lions gives you much more accurate information about Penn State, and they often have people from the other schools on so they could fill you in on how their team is doing. You have some really decent discussions and probably better information and more accurate details than you get from ESPN.

One PSU podcast I watch .

Another decent one:

I don't mind watching some of Josh Pate or Joe Klatt, I think they're fairly well balanced. There's some other minor podcasts that I might tune into but in my opinion there's no need to ever turn on ESPN.

ESPN is like cable news except the fact that they get to televise games keeps them relevant. Cable news has competition and as a result their viewership has collapsed. But if you want to see the actual game, oftentimes you have no choice but to turn on ESPN. If it wasn't for that, ESPN viewership would collapse as well.
