Favorite Coach Moment of the past 7 years

Mine was when Q pinned Grant Gambrall at the Wells Fargo Center in 2011.... and I happen to be sitting next to Cody Sanderson talking to him at the time that it happened. Q hits the standing cradle and Cody and I got to share a moment of sheer pandemonium. Never forget it as long as I live. Cody later mentioned to me at the awards banquet that he shared... Where he was... and how we reacted to Cael, his wife and Cody's wife. He relayed how special of a moment it was for him also and Cael shared a good laugh at how we reacted. The level of class and humility Cody displayed in sharing that special moment in my personal life.. PRICELESS.

We have world class human beings as our wrestling coaches. Never lost on me or should it be for all Penn State wrestling fans.

Completely missed the slapping of the mat... because I grabbed Coach Cody and started the celebration at the same time.

Mine is the reaction to Q pinning Grambrall.

This. Seeing usually calm and collected Cael lose it a little was cool.

Same sentiment here. Q had seemingly been going through an emotional and psychological wringer much of the season leading up to that point. That pin broke Cael's trademark stoicism. Seeing him lose control in pure joy in that moment exemplified how awesome and personal the coach-athlete bond can be.

[Not that the other comments aren't also examples of that bond, but seeing Cael let loose with raw emotion just happened to stick with me more in terms of personal excitement.]

"Pretty sure that young coach over there doesn't know the rules yet".

So many to choose from, but what Cael had to say about Jason and Bo in the presser after the national championships is up there.
There’s a bigger picture. Yeah we want to win, but you know we’d rather compete the right way. And Bo, Bo Nickal threw himself on his back three times today but I guarantee you when people see him wrestle they’re going to stop what they’re doing and they’re going to watch. There are bigger things than winning. The way you compete, the kind of person you are. Obviously much bigger than winning. And the way you compete is bigger than being a four-time national champion. When it’s all said and done there’s gonna be a lot of four time national champions. There’s not gonna be a lot of Jason Nolf’s and Bo Nickal’s though.

At the post-championship gathering at MSG Cael had a lot of interesting things to say from the podium and since I can't quote him exactly I won't try, but what really stuck with me is his recalling the exact point during Nico's final match when he knew Nico was going to win (I think in the second period), and how difficult he found it right then to remain emotionless. He really conveyed the sense of how crushed he'd have been for Nico if he'd lost, which is exactly how everyone in the room felt too.

I like what Cael reportedly did shortly before B10s in 2011. This was before Cael had won any team championship at Penn State. This was when Quentin Wright would be seeded 8th for B10s. Cael, out of the blue, yelled out during a practice something like: "2011 NCAA Champion: Quentin Wright!!!"

One of my favorites is one that was paraphrased after the fact, but I can't find the article. It happened at the 2012 NC's, prior to the finals, and involved an injured Frank Molinaro and Coach Cael. Maybe someone can find the article, I could not. It occurred after Frank injured his leg prior to his finals match against Ness. If someone can find the article, please post it here, otherwise, I'll put it in my own words later today.

This probably isn't the actual article but it has what you are talking about. Scroll down about half way and Frank answers questions about Cael's "pep" talk after he injured his knee in the 2nd round of NCAAs against Sakaguchi.

That's the article, NoVa...thanks. Anyone can manage when everything goes right, the best leaders show up when something goes wrong....perfect case here. Knowing Cael, I'm absolutely positive the message in the article was delivered coolly, calmly, and matter-of-factly.

Which Minnesota championship in the past 7 years was that from?

2-09-14 Some of you have short memories.

"The fact is, the ref made a mistake and misapplied the rule and gave a point when he should have given a stall warning. The assistant ref also blew it by not catching it. The PSU coaches have to get in line as well - they should know the rules as well as the refs and they too, didn't catch it." http://www.thematforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=326037&sid=89b2d7f5a74f9680d22bc77414b71f93

That was the year J Rob and Tony Nelson forgot the top stalling rule in the NCAA finals.
