Penn State well represented, both on the winning and losing side. Great list for going down memory lane, and for arguing which great games got left out. Plenty of both early days of college ball and the modern era (post-whatever year you pick).

Enjoy, and looking forward to any and all submissions for games that should have been included. And not included.

Very cool. A lot of quality games and a fun walk down memory lane.

Not that I want to be fair to Michigan. But their loss to Appy-State doesn't belong anywhere near where they ranked it. Even though it was exciting and forever remains fun to re-live.

Thought the same thing. That's not even top 150, let alone top 5.

A LOT of ND and OSU vs UM. I guess they perfected the great game, so I should have expected it.

Of course the jackass writer got the first narrative wrong - Miami planned all along to walk out of the PSU/Miami dinner - Jerome Brown even stated that after the fact. They just had to get a dig in - I know I am paranoid but ESPN sucks no matter what.

What sticks out at #3 is App State over Michigan

Great Lakes Navy Training over #1 Notre Dame?

Took issue with the write up in PSU/Miami

they said Miami left over a racially suggestive comment by a Penn State player. I thought the story was Jerome Brown stated the Japanese didn’t sit down with the Americans before Pearl Harbor, upon which the Canes walked out of the luau. Then game MVP Joh Bruno corrected Brown by asking “didn’t the US win that war?” How prophetic.

Yes!! I just mentioned this in the other thread. How can they get something like that wrong?

I've heard that someone from PSU joked about letting the black players sit at the same table with the white players. Or something to that effect.

Just an FYI, you may know this already but just in case, Great Lakes is the Navy’s boot camp. Former collegiate players being drafted into the Navy for the war effort made Great Lakes a football powerhouse. The game mentioned even had Notre Dame players on the Great Lakes team after being drafted off the ND campus.

The game that should have been on the list is PSU - OSU 1964. OSU was #1 at the time and the game was in the ‘Shoe but a 3-4 PSU team shut them out 27-0.
OSU didn’t cross midfield until the 4th quarter.

Pretty good list. Basically impossible to hit every game right but we were definitely well represented and I think they did a pretty good job covering all eras and conferences/regions.

The recent game on that list that still stings is the Rose Bowl loss to USC. IIRC Brandon Bell had a huge interception that led to a 15 pt PSU lead. That play proved costly because Bell was injured and the defense struggled after that. I wonder if PSU would have been better off without the INT if it meant a healthy Bell for the rest of the game.

Didn't Darnold complete a 4th down pass down 15 that was deflected and caught for a 1st down. I got a bad feeling after that.

Surprised that PSU's dramatic win over oh-high-ya in 2016 is not on the list, given how the game was punctuated by the dramatic blocked FG and return that barely made it into the end zone.

Another candidate would be the PSU come back against Wisky in the 2016 B10 championship game, with the dramatic stop on 4th down. "Did he make it....... Noooooo !!!!!"

Probably my all time favorite game I attended. Penn State's first B10 championship game, come back win, Saquon Barkley, Booing Delaney. It's just hard to script it any better than that.

34. No. 1 USC 34, at No. 9 Notre Dame 31
Oct. 15, 2005
Trojans quarterback Matt Leinart pushed and spun his way into the end zone -- with help from tailback Reggie Bush and a few more teammates -- to score a 1-yard touchdown with three seconds left. Fans from both sides will never forget the "Bush Push." USC's 28th consecutive win featured three ties and four lead changes, including three in the final 5:09.

Good this was a great game!

That was the same day as the crooked as hell PSU game at Michigan. I remember leaving the stadium and catching the Bush Push in the parking lot.

Biggest upset in college football history.
Wolverines pre-season #5 ranking.
40 pt. Favorites.
Appy State D-2

And yes, I subsequently wear my , purchased, ASU t-shirt proudly.

,,,cheers

It’s great fodder for mockery of our skunk-bear brethren, was exciting to watch and certainly supports the ever-present point that Michigan has many more signature losses than signature wins.

But it’s not a top five game of all time; more a top five bust of all time.

And as much as it’s fun to mock that game, I wouldn't wear a t-shirt to celebrate it as a PSU fan or a ND fan or a Florida fan, or even a MSU fan. After losing to Appy State, Michigan went on to beat all those proud programs before that dreadful season of theirs was over.

Probably just depends on how you define "greatest". It's one of the most memorable and therefore I agree with the ranking. I still remember watching that game like it was yesterday. It wasn't just an upset but it was a great game.

Would agree re a top five bust.
From my perspective, the all time collegiate football schadenfreude
Game ending moment for me.

And I do enjoy sportin my " purchased " ASU T, ( from 2007) whether here in SoCal or when I'm in Michigan to catch some games at Spartan Stadium.

Go State's, beat the Illini and the Gophers.!

Of course. Matters of opinion tend to have considerable subjectivity. ;-) Personally, the most memorable isn’t among the top criteria I’d choose.

Two of the most memorable for me are Penn State’s comeback v tOSU in 97 and 6-4. One was a great game. The other was downright awful. But I completely agree with most of the others named.

I also thought Rutgers’ prime time win over Louisville deserves considerable credit...

Anyway, only one I on the list I really take issue with is UM v Appy State.

have a good night all.

Seems odd to me that 1869 Rutgers 6 Princeton 4 was not deemed to merit sufficient historic significance.
I also feel that, all things considered, the 1981 Penn State - Pitt game was better than 1994 Penn State - Illinois

But didn’t the Japanese lose the war? Makes me LOL every time.
