A couple of former Big Ten star quarterbacks who haven’t amounted to anything in the NFL are crossing paths, with one on the way in and one on the way out of Cincinnati.

The Bengals announced today that they’ve cut quarterback Christian Hackenberg from their practice squad and signed quarterback Connor Cook to their practice squad.

How many ends are on the road? I'm actually hoping he gets another shot either NFL or somewhere else. Is the XFL still happening?
was it ever happening?

I can't see his game fitting the CFL at all, either- inaccurate, immobile QBs don't seem to thrive in the CFL

I wish him well, but he needs to find something else to do

two questions that hit me when we talk re Christian

  1. How did he have such a good season under Bill O'Brien? was it just a solid OL and good WR in ARob?
  2. How did he not lose his spot to Trace when JF replaced Bill O?

as to #2, my guess is that CJF was trying to hold a fragile team chemistry together- but that by year two he was going to make a change- and told Hack so - I still believe that is why Hack left early rather than him thinking he was NFL ready.

JF (and Donovan) had Hack #1 over Trace in 2014 and 2015. only when Hack got hurt v Georgia in bowl game, then Trace came in. TM actually almost got the game back by playing less than a half. that was surprising, especially now how we see JF feels about Trace.

  1. Yes. Add proper use of a tight end, and a well-designed offense (that sadly went down hill when Bill O did not have enough scholarships and decided that OL -- positions that take time for physical development -- would be the area to remain thin). We were a stepping stone.
  2. Offensive system, recruiting stars, freshman year (showing production was possible), NFL expectations (college being the source of preparation), Franklin returning the favor for loyalty to PSU when at its lowest.

Please take this opportunity to remember that Christian Hackenberg let us down because we deserved better.

As for 1, he wasn't running for his life and getting sacked all the time. One thing I respected about Hack was that he got up and kept going. Cannot question his toughness. I also think Rahne screwed up his mechanics. At the end of the day, Hack has not been able to overcome the mechanical issues and the shell shock as for whatever reason he cannot evade a rush and runs into it.

I think Hack gave ARob some chances to make some plays and I think ARob came through and made those plays.

KUDOS to the BOTH of them.

They had him sit with JoeMo to view the new offense which he called “intriguing” but he still went pro anyhow. Hardly the actions of a staff pushing him out the door

So why didn’t Jordan Palmer and all the other NFL coaching at least get him to the point of a serviceable backup? Why is it always someone else’s fault for his failures? He just wasn’t that good

The new offense didn't fit his skill set- at all. I'm sure he knew that, as did the staff.

There could be a book written on what happened with Hackenberg. I don't know the story, but it's obviously there ... and given that news about him still makes waves, in and out of Happy Valley, there's obviously a lot of people interested.

From No. 1 QB recruit to having an all-time great season at Penn State (as a freshman!) to flaming out as a sophomore and junior, but still being drafted in the second round, to never playing a snap in NFL regular season. It's remarkable.

I think part of the problem is the myth of that “all-time great season.” He had a very good year FOR a freshman, and that combined with his recruiting stars prompted the belief that the best was yet to come. Unfortunately, we had already seen the best.

If he's still dating the hot LAX player he's still winning

Tatum and Hack got engaged. I believe that took place earlier this year.

I've met her several times; she is quite attractive. I believe she was a communications major, and interned one summer at ESPN. However, she elected to not go into that field after graduation. She works in pharma sales, and also plays for one of the pro WLAX teams -- I believe the NY team, but I could be mistaken on which team.

Here's a picture of her from back in college:

Did he end up graduating, in which case he could have taken a grad transfer? In hindsight, it probably would not have helped much, but it was an option.

Hack’s NFL career is probably done. But he isn’t the first top high school QB prospect to flame out.
The difference is that it was rare for Penn State to get an elite high school QB prospect and completely unheard of for one to start as a freshman.

In Hack's FR year he had 3 NFL receivers to throw to - Robinson, James and Carter. And Adam Breneman was a high end talent and Geno Lewis was decent. He also had a veteran o-line that, while not the most talented line, had a lot of experience. Hack was not a great leader and IMO when he lost some of those talented veteran players, and more fell on his shoulders, it was not a good match.

This is 100% true. His freshman season wasn't very good. It can be argued that it was good for a freshman.

People who follow recruiting see a 5 star recruit and see that guy as a great player no matter what happens on the field. I mean, the kid wasn't even very good in high school. Check the numbers. But he was 6'4 220, so he MUST be good! No. He was Anthony Morelli 2.0

I think his freshman season has always been overplayed by Penn State fans.

Agreed. His freshman season has become a season of mythos. Every time somebody tells the story of his freshman year the stories grows into a bigger legend than it ever was.

The reality is that the kid simply was never very good. He was a 5-star recruit based on his measurables and what people believed was his potential when in reality he only ever played like a 3-star recruit. The problem is that everybody still views him as a 5-star. The recruiting rankings were way wrong on QBs that year. He and Max Browne were the two top 5-star pro style QBs and both of them were nowhere near what their recruiting rankings had them.

It wasn't Franklin's fault he has failed in the NFL. The NFL demands you be at a certain level to stick and even get in a game and he is not at the level and never was.

I love that he stuck with PSU when he didn't have to while being one of the most sought after recruits in the country and for that I will forever be grateful. He believed in Penn State. He just isn't a very good QB, though.

Reno Hightower was the greatest QB in the history of Kern County.

you just made a great case for why Trace should have taken the #1 QB spot if not in 2014, certainly in 2015.
