Can someone explain this? Is there an order or some traditional process or do they all just run out waving flags and umbrellas?

There are different classifications depending on size and instrument type. The early ones are typically less organized, later they'll do a skit then strut, my favorites are the string bands.

See - what does all this mean? What are the categories? Is it a competition?
Yep, there is judging and prize money is awarded to the winners in each category, which are, IIRC, Comics, Fancy Brigades, and String Bands.

I might be the only So. Philly kid who never cared about the Mummers. In our house, it was Bowl games.

Other than the string bands it’s worthless. It runs all day usually in very cold weather. They should have the string bands only in a 2 hour parade starting at 9 am and dump the rest of the trash. Or have a longer version of the parade in the summer. It’s strickly amateur hour. The streets look dark and everything is dirty. It lacks organization. It’s way past it’s prime. At least a few years ago they shortened the route. No one cares other than the mummers and their families and south Philly neighborhood folks.
