fc on his birthday, top 10 Yogisms....

I read somewhere that Joe D introduced him to Ernest Hemingway. They bumped into him at a restaurant after a game. Yogi asked him what paper he writes for:)

Happy Birthday Yogi! You could always put that bat on the ball no matter where it was pitched. Notorious bad ball hitter.

When he was managing he once said "The other teams could make trouble for us if they win."

Johnny Bench broke his record for HR by a catcher and Yogi said "Congratulations on getting the record. I always thought my record would stand until it was broken."

Yogi is a national treasure.

It was Whitey Ford heard him tell the story to Tim Russert.

Also told a great story of catching a double header in St Louis against the Browns on a 100 degree day. Yogi tried to get thrown out of the game by arguing calls. The plate umpire said , you can cuss me , call me any thing you want , throw out whatever insult you want , but unless you assault me with a bat , as long as I'm out here, you're out here.

There's a great story with Yogi, Phil Linz and Mickey Mantle that led to a brawl.....

Linz was in the back playing a plaintive version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on his harmonica.
Yankee manager Yogi Berra thought the sad cowboy style mixed with a children's nursery rhyme was mocking the team. He told Linz to pipe down. Linz didn't hear and kept playing. Berra became infuriated and called back from the front of the bus, "If you don't knock that off, I'm going to come back there and kick your ass." Linz couldn't hear the words over the music, so he asked Mickey Mantle, "What he say?" Mantle responded, "He said to play it louder"

A very nice write up on Yogi in today's WSJ. Chronicled his relationship with a young man who left HS to help his mother clean houses to make ends meet. Yogi helped the kid with his baseball card shows and encouraged him to return to HS school. He later wrote a letter of recommendation which persuaded the Dean of Admissions at Brown to accept him as a student. Long story short, the kid excelled at Brown, went to work on Wall Street, and is now the CEO of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Newark. Yogi's son Dale periodically posts on the Rutgers Board under the screen name Zappa.

My own Yogi-ism: I was introduced to a guy once and was told he was "in television". I asked if he sold or repaired them? He got this strange look on his face. He was a actually a producer!

Not sure why this did not make the list. " It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings."
Yogi as a first generation Italian spoke Italian and liked to go to operas, especially when the Yanks were on the road. Yogi needed no translation if the opera was in Italian.
Some of his team mates wondered where Yogi went when he disappeared from their activities.
So some of them accompanied him to an opera. They were bored and kept asking Yogi when the thing would be over.
