FC/OT: Dazed and Confused…

What???? 2005 seems like it was about 3 years ago. Similar perspective - was listening to some 60's tunes while driving with my college student daughter last night. Good stuff, and she liked most of it. Made me realize that 60's music to her is like 20's music to me. Argh.

It holds up because there are so many different characters that individuals can relate to. (Me: Tony.) Also, every character has a real-life counterpart in your own timeline. I have known many men like Pink, good, successful men with a natural kindness. (I actually just now thought of Jimmy Cefalo.)

I really admire Linklarer’s films but there is a very good chance this is the only one that will last. The ensemble acting just blows you away and stays with you, very much as in another favorite of mine, The Magnificent Ambersons.

This kind of perspective hits hard.

The world was a more dynamic/interesting place then. Since Millennials came about with their gaming/ lack of socialization, the world has gone to crap. There used to be packs of us kids outside, playing outdoors, and sports all day and into the night. I rarely see a kid ever now.
Even at Penn St, pre-cell phone (barely) if your friends didn’t show as pre-planned, you made the best of it and made new (incremental) friends. I felt like I knew every student by the time I was a Senior. IMO, created a fuller life.
Eff these whining tw@ts now.

Dude - I consider myself old and cranky, but not compared to this take. My college student kids had tons of friends through middle and h.s., and do now that they're in college. They played sports and spent / spend tons of time just hanging out with buddies, even hiking in the woods, swimming at local lakes, etc. Lots of the same stuff I did in the 70's / 80's. Not all teens / 20-somethings are basement shut-in gamers.

The interesting thing is that it just doesn’t feel (at least to me) that the American society changed as much between 2005 and the present as it did between 1976 and 1993. Maybe it is just that I was a child in the 70’s and 80’s, and a young adult in the 90’s. When we look back at past decades, the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are all characterized as having had distinct identities. In many way the last 20 years or so have felt like one continuous decade.

9/11 was 20 years ago. Many kids on college campuses weren’t alive then, and few that were remember it.

Where did the years go? *looks down* 😞

You have to wonder if Dazed and Confused will be well known 50 years from now. Here’s a great line from L.P. Hartley, the first line of The Go-Between: “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.”

2 things:

First, I’ve seen this movie about 100 times, the first time being in State College at the movie theater. Great movie.
And B, along the lines of when this movie would be set if made today, did you know that 2021 and 1980 are just as far apart as 1980 and 1939. Let that sink in.

Do you remembering just walking to a bar to see if any of your friends were there?
Today, that never happens.

Kid #1 texts friend: you going out tonight?
Kid #2: No, playing call of duty
Kid #1: also stays in

This really captures my feelings as well. Man, aging kinda sucks.

I think the biggest difference between now and when I grew up in the 60s is back then the families were much larger and the houses smaller. In my small town neighborhood there were 12 houses on 450’ frontage with nearly 40 kids. All you had to do was walk out of the front door to find something to do and because of all the kids our parents didn’t worry about us. Plus for some reason we never thought about doing anything that would get us into trouble. It was baseball, basketball, football, war, tag and other things we just made up.

Yeah, same experience. Whether it was when I lived on military bases (lots and lots of kids of all different ethnicities and backgrounds, but all military brats), or when home in Western PA (lots of kids, and mostly kids of people my parents went to school with), it was go home, go outside, and see what the day will bring you. In HS in Japan, we would play baseball, tennis, go to CD/video game stores off base, or just hang out. As a much younger kid in Western PA your whole after school life revolved around bikes and finding places to jump your bike. We played video games too but it was altogether, sitting in one room, taking turns trying to clear Super Mario or Castlevania levels (and if you were in-between save points, you just left the Nintendo on until you could get back to your game).

Talking about the blur that is 2000 - present day, I'm trying to think of a signature sound or band that signifies a certain decade and it's very easy to do with the 50's - 90's.

In Europe, the Pill changed society. For several generations now families have been mostly single child families. So kids have no siblings and their parents had no siblings. So in a lot of families a kid today has no brothers, no sisters, no aunts or uncles, and no cousins. Let that sink in.......

Do you have proof? Every person (my age) I knew in Germany and France had at least one sibling. This was in 2001 - 2005.

I love period movies, especially the ones like Dazed and Confused, that really accurately capture the feel of the time period. The clothes, hair, music....great stuff.

Besides D&C capturing the 70's and American Graffiti capturing the end of the 50's, are there any other movies that depict an era by taking place in one day/night? Both great movies with ensemble casts and some serious nostalgia.

I read the message before I saw who posted it but I have an answer so l'll share it.

I always felt that the movie "Go" really captures the late 90's scene. And it's an excellent film. And it even has a great ensemble cast.

Yes agree 100%. I think it’s the internet and social media and the fact that new music is pretty much dead. Generations were marked by the change in the music but rocks been dead for 20 years and not much has replaced it.

C'mon man...this isn't the Test Board. We can be friends here...unless you diss JoePa or something.

Regarding "Go", I'll have to check it out. Is is a one night in the 90's flick? Good tunes? I like 90's music a lot. Not too much after that decade though.

That's why I posted it. It's the perfect movie for you.

This movie fits your exact specifications even down to it being one night. One really awesome night.

The tunes? I don't recall any STP or Soundgarden so that might be the one demerit. Maybe the rave music is important.
