To make a long story short, he was given a contract extension by Pitt's now former AD Heather Lyke. The terms of his contract $6.7mm/yr thru 2030 with large buyout / guaranteed money.

If Pitt should choose to go in another direction re their head football coach, they would have to virtually eat his entire salary and then identify and pay his successor as well.

Now will Pitt be intimately examining his job responsibilities to identify a reason that they can fire him with cause.

Nothing would surprise me. He did demonstrate poor sportsmanship in his encounter with the Toledo HC at the end of the game. If they can establish a pattern ....

Serious question can they afford to go in a different direction?

They have been putting the minimum into football they can get away with and still be a 500 team. They promised for years to be serious about building a stadium now poof nothing but crickets. I think that's a program that is in trouble and are quickly becoming a team that won't even be attractive to the Big 12.

The Big 12 and the ACC seem to be in competition to see who can be the worst Power-Four league in college football.

Here is how dumb the Pit fanbase is, this is their cycle. Season ends and they complain about Douchie (like they are now) but then he spouts off some crude jab at PSU and Franklin (especially if they lose a bowl game) and they get all giddy about it and that keeps them occupied for the next 4 months. Then an idiot radio sports talk host talks about how great some WPIAL kid looked in spring camp and pre-season drills and that he will be the next star at Pit and a future NFL HOF. That idiot radio host will also mention how great it is that local kids stay and play at Pit and that CJF is a used car salesman. Then the PPG will write an article that PIt has the greatest athletic program in the NCAA, does more with less, develops players and that PSU is scared to play Pit and Douchie spouts off and feeds the idiot fan base some more. Finally the season starts and they beat up on some cupcakes in front of 4278 people at Heinz (half of those got buy one get one free tix from Giant Iggle) to start off 2-0 and begin talk of winning Football Natty #261 until finally they lose to a bottom feeder like Kent or maybe a D2 team and then collapse in to another dumpster fire to finish the season.

They are so bad they dont deserve the 2nd 't', they are just a 'Pit'

Well it looks likely until 2030 at least, which is 15 years, basically forever in college football. With that volleyball stadium being built it seems doubtful they can buy him out.

26-8-1 over the last 35 games isn't a rivalry. That's closer to a hammer vs a nail. Illinois has beaten Ohio State 11 times in their last 35 games and no one is foolish enough to suggest that's a rivalry. Eight out of 35 is even less of one.

Pitt hasn't finished in the top 10 or won a major bowl game since 1982. Were you even alive then? Come back when Pitt's relevant.
