maybe CJF will bring him in as a consultant, you could do worse...
East Stroudsburg (D-II – PA): Head coach Denny Douds has announced he has stepped down after 45 years leading the program and move into another role in the athletic department. Douds is the active leader among NCAA coaches in wins with 264 and games coached with 471. Associate head coach Jimmy Terwilliger will take over on an interim basis.

Yeah, he did that at the conclusion of their game on Saturday, which they lost to Ohio Dominican, 48-35.

I thought it was a tad unusual to step down with games remaining in the season. ESU still has games left against Shippensburg and against Clarion.

Perhaps this was something that was in the works. Terwilliger was named associate head coach this past February, and now he'll be the interim head coach for the final two games of ESU's season.

Douds was in his 53rd year on ESU's staff, and his 45th year as head coach of ESU.

I'm not sure if Douds will have time to serve as a consultant to CJF. He's still an assistant professor of Sports Management at ESU, and he's transitioning into being a fundraiser for ESU's athletic department.

Makes me wonder if he is not ill. I hate to think that way, but it seems strange to leave midseason.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Denny Douds for 49 or his 53 years at ESU.

Denny and his family is all class, congrats on a great career. James Franklin wrote a very nice social media message to Denny congratulating him on his great career and thanking him for all he has done for CJF over the years.

Terwilliger had been names as coach in waiting about a year ago so people knew the change was coming soon. My guess is that Denny knew that this year was his last and wanted his final game to be at home. Health is not an issue with him. Their last 2 games are on the road so he turned the reins over to Jimmy Twig. Ironically, Denny's long time offensive coordinator and the guy who thought would take the job over when Denny retired would be Jimmy Twig's dad, Mike, but Denny hung on so long that Mike Twig is now in his 60s and close to retirement also so the ESU Prez decided to name his soon as coach in waiting. Jimmy was an all time ESU great who won the D2 Heisman about a decade ago.

Two icons of Poconos football are retiring this season. Ed Christian from East Stroudsburg South High School is also retiring after coaching there since 1967.

more on Denny stepping down....
Douds called a fourth timeout with four seconds left in the game against Ohio Dominican to tell his team that his coaching career was over.

"I nudged the official in front of me and I said, 'Sir, we are going to call a fourth timeout. I know that is illegal, you're going to penalize it, but that's OK. I am retiring,’” Douds told WNEP. “I called timeout with four seconds to go, blew the whistle, the kids came in and I told them this is what we are doing.”
A video of the moment captured Douds shaking hands before walking off the field. The coach told WNEP he didn’t want his retirement announcement to be a distraction which is why he waited until the game was almost over.

"I told my wife when I leave the stadium, I am going to tip my hat and say, 'I love ya.' I tipped my hat, walked to the car, and smiled all the way home," he said.

Players told WNEP they were saddened by the coach’s retirement.

CLEVELAND BROWNS FIRE COACH HUE JACKSON AFTER FEWER THAN THREE SEASONS, REPORTS SAY

"He is legendary in this program and around this area. We are all sad about it, but the only thing we can do is move forward from here, and that's what we are looking to do as a program," Keanan Baines, the team’s defensive tackle, said.

Douds said he planned on teaching and fundraising for the school. As for who will coach the Warriors next, associate head coach Jimmy Terwilliger was slated to take over for the rest of the season, Sports Illustrated reported.

Any word on why Douds did not wait until after the season to retire?

the best I can tell is, they had a plane in place, (new HC etc) and he didnt want to be the center of attention (but yet you walk off the field with 4 seconds to go tip you hat get in the car and drive home?) As it says above, he did it his way.

Another quarterback who played under Douds was Penn State head coach James Franklin. Franklin, who played at ESU from 1991 to 1994, expressed his gratitude on social media.

“So much more than a coach to me — been a major part of my life for almost 30 years,” Franklin wrote. “For a kid who grew up largely without a father figure, Coach Douds filled that role as well as a mentor and a friend! Love you coach and appreciate you more than I can ever express! We all understand the importance of wins in this business, but I hope I can make the same type of impact you made on young people and on the community.

Something in the water up there. I don’t recall his name, but Stroudsburg High’s coach was also a 40-50 year guy (he was forced to retire a few years ago).

Ed Christian from East Stroudsburg, coaching his last year after 40some years. Fred Ross also coached at Stroudsburg High for a very long time, he retired about 10 yrs ago.

Grew up down the street from Ed Christian, hung with his son and daughter growing up. Great family.

To be fair, Easton was good long before Ross arrived there. Schiffert is no longer head coach at Easton (he was also let go despite a lot of success) so wonder if Ross is still there.

Yes, Fred was forced to retire because his teams were no longer competitive. Joe Bernard won the MVC the next season with basically the same team after Fred won 2 games the year before. Love Fred, but it was time. As noted below, Easton was a powerhouse long before Fred got there.
