for the Texans!!! It should be fun!!!

Houston Texans: The Texans will not hire an offensive coordinator to replace George Godsey, per John McClain, who adds that head coach Bill O’Brien will call plays and wide receivers coach Sean Ryan will move to coach the quarterbacks

I suppose every head coach wants to control their destiny but in the NFL this sounds like a lot extra for the head coach to accomplish. Maybe it will work in this instance.

How many other NFL head coaches call their own offensive plays or defensive plays? I do not know the answer but suspect it is very low if any.

I can't imagine him being happy with anybody else calling the plays

Wouldn't want to be his QB coach, either

Sounds to me like the Texans are putting him in a position to hang himself with his own rope..... (and not just via the offensive play-calling -- a head coach always has the perogative of getting involved in this regard if they wish -- but via the increased responsibilities of OC and weekly game preparation that requires on top of all his Head Coaching responsibilities he already has. IOW, it sounds like they don't want to fire him and pay the guarantee.....so they're just going to drive him out of Houston by making his life there miserable.....).

The need to give up your love in life to be the HC is difficult for some and impossible for a few. Being a HC generally means you administrate the entire program with lieutenants running all the operations under your supervision. He is unwilling to relinquish the offense and if my head were on the block I may do the same yet it is not the norm from what I understand.

In my profession I did not relinquish some key responsibilities to others deeming them too vital to my success and security. I suppose this is no different although calling plays should involve you heavily with the offense in all practices, game planning and other facets I am not keenly aware of personally not being an NFL guru. That is a major time commitment for a HC to add to his plate.

Yea and if it doesn't work who are you going to blame?

you live by the sword, you die by the sword. its hard to find fault with what O'Brien has accomplished since leaving PSU for the Texans. He's taken them to the playoffs in two of his three years. And that without a decent QB and with his best player often on the sideline injured. This is a team that was 2-14 the previous year.

I don't think BOB is the problem in Houston.

The GM seems to be a real moron. Doesn't have a stellar history with draft picks and for some reason decided to sign Brock Osweiler to a huge contract without consulting the head coach.

And in the two years prior to that it was 10-6 and 12-4 and made the playoffs. Their QB was Matt Schaub (and TJ Yates).

True but it is by far the worst division in football.

Is this the same GM to drafted Hopkins, Fuller and Clowney? Doing a lot better than other GMs are doing with their first round picks anyway....The signing of the QB without consulting the coach would definitely be a bad idea, but with what they had, they had to take a chance...I suspect they will sign McGloin on the cheap to be the backup this year...

John McClain?

Welcome to the party, pal!

Is it confirmed that mgt didn't consult with B.O.B. before signing Osweller? Regardless, that decision is a real head scratcher. Watching him against NE, he seems to have the slowest delivery I've ever seen for an NFL QB - and throws sort of side arm, which would seem to reduce the height advantage. Seems hopeless.

Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy, and Ben McAdoo handles the play calling. Reid and McCarthy gave it up for a little bit but took it back. I think Reid has always called the plays in his time in KC. Kubiak called the plays for Denver during the last 2 seasons. I think Adam Gase calls the plays in Miami. Bruce Arians also calls the plays in Arizona. Hue Jackson started the season as the Browns' play caller but might have handed it off to Pep Hamilton. Hamilton is now at Michigan so I would assume Jackson will be calling plays next season. Jay Gruden may be taking over play calling duties next season as McVay is now the Rams HC. Sean McVay will call plays next season for the Rams. Sean Payton is the Saints play caller and Mike Zimmer normally calls the plays for the Vikings D. Doug Pederson also called plays last year. Rex Ryan and Chip Kelly are 2 other HC that called the plays last season. It looks like 12 head coaches will call plays for their teams next season so that is about 38% of the head coaches.

Working well for the Packers. They are one game from the Super Bowl with their HC as the play caller

One thought was that BOB's offense is very complex and he knows it best. Past OC and any new hires would not be as good as BOB at running it the way it needs to be understood and run.

Well they also made Vrabel the DC and moved Crennel to Sr. Advisor. So maybe O'Brien will focus on the offense and let Crennel handle the D for him

Believe Crennel was also given the title, and responsibilities, of "Assistant Head Coach" to enable Vrabel to be given the DC title.
