FC/OT: Forbes annual ‘Top Colleges’ list....

Just for fun, I pulled the ranking of all power 5 schools. Conference ranking by average is:

B1G 107
ACC 114
Pac 12 131
SEC 213
Big XII 257

It should be noted that Louisville is a massive anchor on the ACC coming in at 431. Without them, they are 90. If the B1G drops Nebraska (239) it averages 97.

WVU is dead last among power 5 schools at 454.

Some schools often connected to future B1G expansion -- Oklahoma at 188 and Kansas at 260. In that regard, we did well poaching Maryland (63) and Rutgers (123).

Why does a composite of conference school rankings matter?

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is no. 20. The second highest ranked public school in the country behind only University of California - Berkeley and ahead of the Naval Academy. Like I've said before - and NO DOUBT - the best combination of athletics and academics in the U.S. Go Blue !

The only problem with your Michigan analytics is that it only showed bang for your buck, not the quality of education. Are you a reflection of a Michigan education?

Let's just get this all out there now and close this thread:

1. Penn State is awful.
2. barren is clueless.
3. TUITION.
4. State funding is atrocious.
5. "I wouldn't allow my kids to apply to Penn State because there are better options for less money." ("But I'll still watch the football games and root like hell for the team.")
6. "Penn State won't get a dime from me until they honor Joe."
7. barren and the bot don't care about Penn State's academic profile so long as they get their monthly lunch buffet and onion dip bar.
8. Penn State gets horrendous out-of-state students. Quality in-state students all go elsewhere. MONEY.
9. Penn State spends too much on construction projects. The barracks from the '40s where my classes were held were good enough for me back in the '60s. They're good enough for the current students.

I have to caca.

This isn't a 'best value' list, but it *does* only take into account undergraduate education. So, that is why you see the Colorado School of Mines ranked higher than Penn State. Additionally, if you *only* included public universities on this list, Penn State is #29.

PSU, Inc.

The list is absurd for many reasons, one being that many schools on the list are not peers of Penn State.

(Since we’re UNRIVALED. , are we also PEERLESS. ?)

Huh? If it’s a best of list (such as it is) why would you limit it to a peer group?

Unless, of course, they happened to be favorable to Penn State. In that case they meant everything.

Nope. Even if PSU was ranked #1 I’d still say the rankings are worth squat. If you spend even the slightest amount of time to looking into how these lists are put together and how the numbers are manipulated you’d come to the same conclusion.

Read the first sentence of my post again and stop being so critical of everyone.

And just for fun, I asked you why the composite was important.

You must be trying to be the biggest jerk on this board. At least I hope you aren’t this big of a jerk for real.

Trying? If I were really trying you'd like me a whole lot less. And for real, I'm a pussycat:

Now if you could just find a bus driver to take you to Indianapolis, you'd win the Trifecta.

maryland at 63? These rankings are all bullshit, but this one may the worst sort of bullshit of all of them.

Eeeaaasy now, Bobby. My brother LionJim and I are both also Terps. I used to list my Penn State degree first, but looks like I should be putting that Maryland degree up there instead.

LOL. The top measurable should be a negative. “How many grads are still living at home with mommy and daddy and length of time their after graduation?” How long with the US continue to guarantee loans for degrees that have no market value?

https://www.theonion.com/how-u-s-news-ranks-colleges-1819591384

U.S. News & World Report published its influential annual list of the nation’s best colleges earlier this month, with Princeton University topping the 2014 rankings. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at the methods and metrics used by the magazine:

  • Step 1: Schools are weighed on a scale
  • Step 2: Researchers calculate each campus’ student-to-student ratio
  • Step 3: Any college whose colors are maroon and gold is immediately eliminated
  • Step 4: Analysts aggregate incoming freshmen’s SAT, ACT, and COWFACTS test scores
  • Step 5: Number of library books probably factors in somewhere around here
  • Step 6: Quick visit to colleges to see who has “We Love U.S. News & World Report” banners up
  • Step 7: ((Average class size)(Quads per student)) / ((Out-of-state tuition)(Number of West African fusion dance troupes)) + (Nobel Prize winning faculty members - Number of meal plan options)^Number of nicknames for dining hall
  • Step 8: Data are meticulously triple-checked and corrected as necessary to ensure that you say “This is complete bullshit” when you see your school’s rank

Yeah, every Michigan athlete is a Rhodes Scholar...just like you.
My advisor at Maryland had tenure at Michigan before moving (with tenure) to Maryland. (Michigan is top ten in mathematics, Maryland was top twenty at the time.) I once asked him why he left. “I couldn’t stand the way they prioritized athletics at Michigan.” “Well, it must be somewhat similar here at Maryland.” “There’s no comparison.” TIFWIW.

That's just one person's view. The athletes that have come through Michigan are some of the most intelligent ones out there. Just look at some of their interviews....people like Tom Brady - the GOAT !!!!

Ever hear Tom Brady talk about anything other than football? No, because he doesn't know about anything other than football.

He did O.K. choosing a wife, though they should have no reason to talk.

for 2019. Spoiler alert - Harvard #1, Penn State #117, Pitt #144. This list is for all undergraduate education in the US; not categorized by highest degree level offered (which is how US News does theirs IIRC).

Went to PSU and an unranked medical school... now I make a great income and have an academic title to match.

I agree, ranking is garbage when you have a huge alumni network like Penn State. A lot of this ranking crap has to do with INH grants which has zero bearing on the average education of an undergrad student. TBH my classes with important professors at Penn State tended to be mostly taught by TAs. TTFWIW

In general, I’d say that if you’re not someone who can avail yourself of resources and need things handed to you, a small expensive liberal arts school is what I’d recommend.

Michigan is 8th - truly an amazing school. This is why the 5 stars are lining up to play for Jim. Not only one of the most heralded football powers of all time (no 1 in total wins) but an education unmatched by anyone in the B1G. Facts are facts - hard to dispute. The stars are lining up - release the Wolverine in Michigan football !!!

Hey Wolve, what’s going to happen when they release the Wolverine in Michigan football and you you have your typical nothing type year? Then what’s left for you?

Ouch. That was kicking the guy right where it hurts. A bold move before a season when they’re supposed to have an excellent defense. But if you’re right (as any other Bi1G fan would hope), it’s fair to say they’ve been working on releasing the Wolverine long enough that it’s reasonable to think it just can’t seem to get out of its own way. With all they’ve out into that program one would have to expect some serious discomfort in Ann’s Arboretum.

Wasn’t last year the year it would have been released with that vaunted Don Brown defense? And what do they have to show for it? Another year ending like so many others.
I like Wolve, but either he’s the most optimistic yet naive fan out there, or he’s playing us. Either way it’s cimedy gold.

To be fair, we had saquon 2 years ago and last year was Trace’s senior season with an OL projected to be solid. Lots of soft spots in both squads but many of us were optimistic.

I don’t know the guy. He may be playing us but it’s more likely optimism that’s shared by many college sports fans.

It often does at places like UVA and Michigan. Not PSU. Sorry but you’re mistaken.

Honestly, that probably tells you all you need to know about the educational quality trend at the institution. Given the pressure on public flagships to (rightfully) fulfill their in state educational mission, any public flagship worth its salt should always have a lower out-of-state acceptance rate. (Note: I don't think it's a function of out of state price suppressing demand, inasmuch as UVa and Michigan both have materially higher out of state tuition.)
