Released 27 years ago today. Wow.

Crazy to think of that. I saw them at Rec Hall opening for thr Smashing Pumpkins and Chili Peppers right after the record came out. No one had any idea who they were prior, and everyone bought "Ten" the next day. Anyone else in attendance?

They played an amazing concert at the BJC on the weekend after finals in 2003. It was like 4 hours long and they even released an album of it. Totally amazing concert. Probably the best event that has ever happened at the BJC.

At that time the album Ten was about 12 years old and Vs. was 9 years old, and Pearl Jam was already kind of dated. That was 15 years ago. Unreal how much time has gone by.

Also kind of weird that we are into the third decade since the 1991-94 era, and all of the good rock music of the last 28 years came out of that 2 1/2 year period. There may have been a few bands since then that weren't complete garbage, but that's about the nicest thing you can say.

Hmmm, guess I just disagree on the dearth of good bands. Sure, tons of hot garbage, but still lots of great bands IMO. Queens of the Stone Age, Wilco, the Black Keys, the White Stripes just off the top of my head.

Foo Fighters started in ‘95 but of course had a platinum pedigree with Grohl.

Eight Weeks in 1991

To me, 1991 stands out as a high water mark in a great decade of music (the ‘90’s). Some incredible music was released that year, particularly in the late summer – early fall. The following releases came out between August 13 and October 8 of that year:

Metallica Metallica (Black) 91/08/13
Pearl Jam Ten 91/08/27
Toad the Wet Sprocket Fear 91/08/27
Guns 'N Roses Use Your Illusion I 91/09/17
Guns 'N Roses Use Your Illusion II 91/09/17
Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik 91/09/30
Nirvana Nevermind 91/09/24
Primal Scream Screamadelica 91/10/08
Pixies Trompe Le Monde 91/10/08

Talk about a swirling rock scene! Grunge clashing with Metal clashing with Alternative and all duking it out on the airwaves. And a few weeks later, U2’s Achtung Baby was released! Some truly transformational releases in there, several of which are now all-time classics. Most of these bands were peaking creatively at this time. And all this follows an extremely interesting spring and summer of releases from REM, Material Issue, Morrissey, and Jesus Jones among others.

Those eight weeks in 1991 saw more high quality music released than the past eighteen years combined!

Maybe I’m just getting old, I don’t know. Mostly dreck on the airwaves today. Okay, back to my I-Pod.

Things were bubbling up before then - specifically, in 1989. Nirvana's 'Bleach', NIN's 'Pretty Hate Machine', RHCP's 'Mother's Milk', and Faith No More's 'The Real Thing' were all released and signaled a beginning of the end of hair bands and the birth of a vibrant and more mainstream 'alternative' music scene.

I was there in the second row, of my 60+ pearl jam shows, it’s still one of my favorites. Although it wasn’t quite 4 hours. It was closer to 3:15.

Yep, with Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Stone Roses in the mix as well.

I was at the Rec Hall concert as well! A lot of people don't believe me. I went with my GF at the time and I remember saying who the heck is Pearl Jam?!?! I bought Ten after the Rec Hall concert. Good times.

I bought a lot of CDs back then at Blue Train.

I came back to State College for that Pearl Jam concert. It was amazing. Probbaly my favorite of all the times I have seen Pearl Jam live. I even bought those CDs of the State College concert.
