DirecTV Now is one of the better over-the-top cable replacements out there, and with this deal, there’s very little reason not to give it a try.

For a limited time, if you prepay for three months of the service at $35 per month, you’ll get a 4K Apple TV included for free. That Apple TV costs $179 normally, so you’re basically getting a $74 discount on the box, plus three months of live TV. No brainer.

Agree it's a great deal, but I guess I thought of getting rid of DirecTV as part of "cutting the cord." I thought of cutting the cord as going away from the major offerors and signing up for individual services/channels a la Netflix, Hulu, Prime, PlayStation Vue. Does that term only apply to getting rid of cable?

I think of cutting the cord as moving away from traditional, hard-wired cable services (Comcast, FiOS, etc.) but agree the term also applies to a move towards non-traditional streaming services. With this deal, you could try Hulu, Netflix, etc. via your brand new Apple 4K TV, since you can turn off auto-renew after your three months. :)

You need to already be a subscriber of Directv, however, to get this?

I’m with you, Cincy... i “cut-the-cord” when I dumped DirecTV two years ago and rely strictly on OTA...

Wonder why AT&T/DirecTV does not wish to be a part of the stigma? ;)

I have done a bunch of comparing services for what we may do if we get rid of Comcast and it will be DirecTV Now.

I am thinking about dropping DirecTV and switching to the Directv now.
Signing up as soon as I get home.....
Already use appletv nearly exclusively.....
Also I guess I'm buying a 4K tv.....,

Any suggestions on a great, 60"+, 4K set?
I don't need 3D or curved lens or anything....
Just maybe 4+ HDMI's and a great picture, don't wanna break the bank (yes I know how cheap tvs have become)

I just bought a couple Samsung 55in 4K TVs at walmart for 499 and got a $100 walmart gift card with each one. They are ok.
Think the $100 gift card deal is rather gone or reduced now.

Use this website to find a TV. "Great" is too broad for a recommendation and we've no idea what your bank is so is hard to say what will/won't break it.

As others have asked, what on earth do you like about Comcast over DTV ??????? Have had it for years and it beats Comcast hands down. ESPECIALLY now that Comcast has dumped BTN.

Be aware of the one downside to DirectvNow ... you won't have DVR capabilities. I guess there is some work around with some viewings available through their on-demand feature, but if you want to record a PSU football game and watch it a few months later, they don't provide those capabilities (yet).

I am sure there are folks on this board that may be able to provide you with a technical option to solve this issue, but I haven't dug into it deeply enough to know the details.

Make sure you get 120hz native at that size. Samsung's native 120 is listed on the box as 240, for example. Otherwise you run the risk of motion blur.

Also, if you're going to stream TV, don't cheap out on a router.

Xfinity X1 guide and function are superior to Direct TV. Satellite internet flat out sucks. Not sure what hands down you're talking about.

On demand very seldom works. 9 times out of 10, when trying to access a "free" on demand movie after you have selected it it will indicate a price to view or say not available at this time. so WTF is it listed under free or at all.....
Channel surfing is painfully slow, as is using the search feature.
In bedroom, it is impossible to see the tiny font they use on the guide/on demand screen.
To access recorded programming from the app you must be on the home wifi. So what is the point of it? My kids record shows but cannot watch till they are back home from school.
Above is off the top of my head, guaranteed my wife's list would be much longer.
If comcast runs a promo to pay off direct contract, I will switch back as fast as I possibly can. As I mentioned, for us, the only thing better than comcast is the price. Tthus directtv defines "you get what you pay for".......

Maybe it's a regional thing. I have had none of those issues. In all fairness, I usually don't watch any recorded programs till I get home and am able to relax. Channels for me with DTV change instantaneously and the font seems like the same size as when I'm on the road watching Comcast or some other cable outlet.

As long as DTV allows me to get BTN when I'm on the road, I'm more than happy. And I have had FAR better quality reception at home than I used to have with Time Warner. No more checkered screens after midnight. Maybe four or five 2 to 5 minute weather blackouts in the last ten years.

My internet sucks too bad to get any of the internet tv stations. And I can't get OTA channels where I live.

Is your cable too old? At the end of December, I had a new internet installed in the house. I was dropping the cable and wanted to make sure the new broadband would give me a nice ride for streaming Prime, Netflex, Vue. For a f'n month, the internet had problems frequently. Then the cable company did their over the line diagnostics several times and other maintenance protocols. Finally the company sent a fellow to replace the modem-WiFi and told my wife the installation should have replaced the existing cable. He did, and no problems since.

I always see some complain about Comcast, and the "dish" services. But I have not had a single problem with Verizon FIOS. Sure it's a little more costly. But it is super reliable. I switched to Comcast once for price (a great entry deal) but fired them before my 30 day cancel option expired due to the poor reliability.

I live on top of the 7 Mountains. There is NO cable, No Fios, Only DSL (and just barely). My options are quite limited.
