Houston: Tillman Fertitta, the billionaire chairman of the UH board of regents, said Monday if Houston loses Tom Herman it won’t be over money.

The arms race continues.

If I were Texas I would see if I could catch lightning in a bottle twice, (assuming they fires Strong), and hire the guy from Wyoming. IIRC they had a pretty good run with Fred Akers, and didn't he come from Wyoming??

They couldn't run Akers out of Austin fast enough, when he went from 11, to 7, to 8 and then 5 wins.

well he did win 2 SWC championships, that and there's always a shinning new trinket some place, like a Mac Brown, who, IIRC they couldn't get him out of town fast enough either!!!

They did the same to David McWilliams and John Mackovic.

Texas wants the next Darrell Royal.
Maybe they'll bring Clev Bryant back and have him run the show!! He'll fit right in!!

Well David McWilliams was pretty bad. I think he had 1 good year and the rest were really, really bad.
But yea they want the next Darrell Royal.

If Texas does not get Tom Herman, I am really curious as to whom they go after. I still think that Bobby Petrino is ripe to move on from Louisville. I think he has done all that he can do there, and at this point, he needs a bigger stage - and Texas or LSU might be the place.

I could see him at LSU, but not really Texas. As you said, Texas wants Daddy D back, and I don't think Bobby Petrino is Daddy D. After watching Houston's Offense, I wonder if they just skip Herman and go right to their own, Colt McCoy (sp?)?

If anything, that might keep the bidding lower than it would have been had that not been said.
I think that wasn't so much a statement of fact, but a tactical statement.

I met John MacKovic at a few football workshops in the early 80's. I forget where he was coaching at the time...maybe Illinois ????

Brian Piccolo was on the Wake forest team with MacVovic, I remember reading a book on the two and their day at college. Long time ago

Not sure about Petrino. Louisville is in the ACC now, different from his first stint. The ACC is not near as strong as B1G or SEC, yet the champion is pretty much guaranteed to be in a 4 team playoff, let alone an 8 team playoff that may be coming. LSU/SEC is a much tougher road. He's in a pretty good position for maximizing his chances at the CFP.

...Texas could easily offer Saban or Urban $15 mil/yr with their alums...

...would either jump?...

I have heard talk down here about maybe Major Applewhite, the Houston OC and former UT QB (also coached for Saban at Alabama). Applewhite was extremely popular with fans, as he was the QB during the Chris Simms era.
