The below is directly referenced in the letter and makes it somewhat germane to other ongoing board discussions.Not unusual. Had it happen to a buddy of mine back in the day. They were made "instant alumni" and they then did something called "recolonization". This was not at PSU, BTW.
Just a timeout from house life for what some might call a bit of bad behavior. The article refers to it as "a lengthy list of transgressions."They are closing the house/building for a year, not the chapter/organization.
I can't say anything. I think I might have witnessed stuff just as bad during my high school senior week in Ocean City, NJ in 1978.As a TKE Nu Tau Chapter I am shocked and outraged.
they are taking the bat out of Barron's hands- smart
I think they might be giving the guys a respite to ponder that notion.Perhaps if more had self policed, we wouldn't be in this situation.
Well, that was before the forward thinking, life saving keg ban.I remember lots of hazing, lots of beer but not so much forced drinking of hard liquor. Am I wrong? Feel free to correct me.

This is a lifestyle I cannot relate to. I was not in a fraternity but did live in a downtown apartment my senior year with 4 friends. Our beverage of choice was Mountain Dew. We occasionally had a rum and Coke but we were all over 21 at the time. None of us ever got drunk. We had terrific times together and, being sober, we remembered them. I am not being critical. Everyone has to take their own path into adulthood. I just want to point out that you don't need to get sloshed in order to enjoy your college experience.Wow, Interesting stuff.
Having been a part of the Greek scene in the early/mid 80's I do not remember any deaths. I remember lots of hazing, lots of beer but not so much forced drinking of hard liquor. Am I wrong? Feel free to correct me.
I was Greek in that same time period. I remember a lawsuit against TKE after a drunk student died in a car accident after leaving a TKE party. The story is they got a bunch of witnesses to confirm the student got trashed at a dorm party before going out to TKE and didn't have anything to drink there. The lawsuit was dropped. NOTE: This is all based on my 30 plus year memory of the incident.Wow, Interesting stuff.

I was just up for my house's 100th anniversary and the TKE situation was discussed. By closing the house, the TKE Property Association has the ability to determine who will and who will not be allowed back in the house. That is their intention as well. Fraternities will have zero leeway for any violation, so they intend to clean out the bad apples.
They are also doing renovations. Without seeing the condition of the property and going by the report of the "transgressions," the house might be in pretty bad shape and in need of a shutdown and makeover.Does not make much sense . In theory they could clean out the bad apples without closing the house . Closing the house does not guarantee positive results either.
I don't know about the Mountain Dew in your "collegiate years", but the stuff today is so full of sugar and caffeine that it should be regulated.This is a lifestyle I cannot relate to. There are now two quality fraternity properties that might be of value to PSU insiders. Any TKE brothers on the BOT who might have influenced this decision as a first step toward eventually purchasing the property?Just a timeout from house life for what some might call a bit of bad behavior. The article refers to it as "a lengthy list of transgressions."
"The announcement from House Corporation President Thomas Becker specified a lengthy list of transgressions, including: the actives and their guests continuing damage and disrespect of the property and its contents to an extent never seen or experienced before, particularly during the fall semester; the failure to abide by TKE and Pi Chapter traditions, standards, rules & regulations; the late return of housing contracts and other required documents; the late payment and non-payment of financial obligations by too many members; many police visits to the property; violations of State College Borough ordinances and Pennsylvania statutes at the property; IFC and University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life sanctions and fines for inappropriate or disallowed activities on fraternity property; and the board’s perception that, despite having many outstanding individual members, there was a lack of group acceptance of responsibility and accountability for too many of these failures & problems."
Beta?I listened to the segment on Smerconish this morning with the attorney for the family. i doubt that Frat ever opens back up at PSU.

So?Did you see the condition of the house before the current brothers moved in?
When is the last time the house was renovated?
The point being the condition of the house and the transgressions could have taken place over decades.
???IF a house is in bad condition the day you move in is there any point getting rid of the current tenant if it was a previous tenant that did the damage?
Beta?
If so, that's already been determined
Beta-PSU is not "suspended"....... they are "terminated"
It was probably the same then, but the 4 of us had so little money we could each only afford a couple of cans a week.I don't know about the Mountain Dew in your "collegiate years", but the stuff today is so full of sugar and caffeine that it should be regulated.
Sugar = 46 grams
Caffeine = 54 grams
We'll see. Never is a long time. And that's assuming the decision survives legal scrutiny..Beta?

Ummm 54grams of caffeine would be a lethal dose.Have you looked at a Monster/Rockstar/Redbull/Starbucks DoubleShot lately???
54 grams of caffeine ain't much these days fella,
Hold on to your tampon: an 8oz cup of brewed coffee is about 90mg
Ummm

Was it you guys that made it a "dry town" or were you guys just outlaws back then?I can't say anything. I think I might have witnessed stuff just as bad during my high school senior week in Ocean City, NJ in 1978.

I can confirm that the house closure was a proactive safety measure by TKE's board.I was at my fraternity golf outing this past weekend (we're across the street from TKE) and the rumor is there was a significant amount of counterfeit bills found in their house. Not sure if that is just a rumor or one of the "transgressions"!?
Just outlaws. I believe Ocean County was dry from its founding in the 19th century. At least that's what I remember my mother, a proud teetotaler who grew up in Gloucester, NJ, telling me. The drinking age in NJ in 1978 was 18 and Somers Point not far away.Was it you guys that made it a "dry town" or were you guys just outlaws back then?
We did our damage at Wildwood Crest in the early '90's. The police were only involved when an accomplice decided to fight a parking meter at 2 am.
Great place. We vacation there every summer with the kids and I'm very familiar with Somers Point!Just outlaws. I believe Ocean County was dry from its founding in the 19th century.
