Pitino held a press conference today regarding Louisville vacating wins, including a national championship. He also released a written statement and was pretty adamant that he’s not been involved in paying players/ cheating (from ESPN)-

"In 40 years of coaching, I have never been involved, directly or indirectly, in any effort to pay any money or extend any improper benefit to any recruit or any recruit's family members or representatives," Pitino said in the statement. "I knew nothing about any agreement to make improper payments, and had no reason to suspect any illegality in the recruitment of any athlete in my programs. I never engaged in any improper communication with anyone, or had any part in such effort -- overtly, covertly, in code, through nuance, or in any other way. Not with sneaker company representatives, not with coaches, not with agents, not with recruits' family members, not with anybody. I have never been involved, nor asked anyone to get involved, in such corrupt behavior and have never approved of it. Corruption and cheating have no place in any program I have run."

Now, whether you believe him or not, that’s a pretty comprehensive and complete denial.

If reports are true and he’s been caught on tape by the FBI, then he’s completely stupid for releasing such a statement. Could the authorities be playing fast and loose with selective source leaks not being corrected (like the PA OAG)?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

vacating wins is and has always been a ridiculous notion
Guess he'll have to have sex with some woman on a restaurant table to make him feel better. Oh, I forgot, he already did that to make him forget about his brother--in-law being killed in The World Trade Center on 9/11.

actually how does the FBI have any jurisdiction in this matter? providing benefits to recruits in order to get them to come to your school is an NCAA problem, but I do not think improper competitive advantage is the jurisdiction of the FBI. if fund were provided to a recruit, would they be chasing tax avoidance, as not reported?

bottom line is that the FBI is not charged with investigating NCAA infractions, which are a contractual matter with member schools.

These guys better be careful or they may end up forfeiting that big Hilltoppers win in 1963.

True. The FBI and NCAA appear to think they’ve traded areas of responsibility over the years.

I just thought it was interesting that Pitino emphatically denied paying players since (if reports are true) the Feds could play a tape proving him a complete liar.

Then I thought is this a move out of the Pennsylvania Attorney General playbook where something is leaked to the press to cause a fury and they purposefully hold back from correcting the record to keep the PR going.

I thought they hired strippers to have sex with recruits.

That was what caused the recent vacation of wins and the national title. While addressing that today Pitino also addressed the paying players/ FBI accusations that are swirling as well.

LOL! Well, we’ll see if saint Rick is criminally indicted by the Feds. Something tells me he will be. #basketball culture

FBI claims to have a recording of an assistant coach in discussion with Addidas representatives to pay a player. Not Pitino.

Money laundering, tax avoidance, typical rackets.

There is a lot of speculation running around that shoe companies, handlers and "camps" were paying high school and college coaches to get kids to their camps. Money was being paid to "handlers" of kids. Of course, none of that money was being reported. Some of it may have been illegal, not sure about that. But if cash was moved in an illegal way, then there are all kinds of additional charges that may be brought (racketeering). For example, it a prostitute was bought and paid for by a coach for a high school recruit, that is illegal. if that woman was being extorted into a life of prostitution (think pimp), then add on things like human trafficking. There will be no shortage of charges.

Jay wright. Roy Williams. U.K. Cal. Coach K. Izzo (2nd or 3rd issue??). Maryland coach. stallings at Vandy. Sean Miller. Bill self. Gregg Marshall.
Come on down and join the party! Oh you didn't know?? Well it didn't matter for Pitino: YOU should have known.
Stallings, eh? Can’t imagine a happier group than the Pitt folk. This may be the out they’ve been waiting for.

Stallings leaving Vandy when he did was really weird. He’d been there forever.

So having read the full disclosure, the amounts regarding Vandy is like $150. Not sure that’s enough for the pitters to get their wish.
