Looking at LSU and 'Bama's rosters, they're loaded with defensive playmakers. Yet in today's game, against a stellar RPO offense with a solid OL and great QB, 'Bama with all of that talent had no answer. Add in so many defensive penalities being called, I really don't know what DC's can do these days.
Today's LSU-Alabama game emphasizes the importance of having top tier talent with the front 7, DL and LB. The ability to bring pressure without a blitz, even against a good OL.
I'm beginning to wonder what the best strategy is from a DC standpoint, depending on the talent level of your defense (especially secondary). Play a soft zone and wait until they make a mistake, or play more like Dan Brown would and go with more man coverage.
These days, good/great offensive teams will score on either scheme. I used to be a zone guy but maybe more one-on-one man coverage is the way to go. Better chance that the D would then have someone get to the QB, at least rattle him, and if they score, they'll do so quickly on a big play without too much time taken off the clock. It might be better than having your D get bludgeoned to death on a long drive.
That philosophy almost worked for Michigan vs. PSU. Take away just one of our big pass plays and the outcome might be different.
