Wrestling FinalX PBP

Wouldn’t be surprised if Marsteller wins next two.

i don’t think they got that call right in the end. you can’t get planted on your back for a second then kick a guy through without giving up points. in the middle, that’s probably 4+2. on the edge just 4 burroughs. incredible effort by marsteller to make it close by keeping his feet in.

BUT 4 burroughs wouldn’t have been correct either. Ironically, the correct call would have been caution + 1 for chance because JB had a full fist of singlet in the back.

glad chance won. he was the better wrestler today and ultimately was rewarded.

Perhaps an unpopular position :

Nolf probably my favorite PSU wrestler of all-time but can’t help but be disappointed with that effort.

I know Dake is an all-time great, but you’ve trained for over a year, just for him, and you’re gonna lose 2 straight without even scoring a point? Rather you get tech’d going for it — just do something.

Agreed. I wrote something similar over on Intermat. Nolf is never going to beat Kyle Dake in a low scoring match. That plays into Dake's strengths and allows him to play defense and hold center. Which will, in turn, get Nolf put on the clock.

To beat Dake (and this is a massive oversimplification, of an incredibly difficult thing to do) you have to take it to him and put him back on his heels. See: Olympic QF. Nolf got in on one shot, and then got stuffed for 2 and 2.

I understand the NLWC wanting to be the best it can be, but man it would suck if Nolf opts to look elsewhere so as to not be in the same room as Dake in the lead up to the Olympics
I clearly felt Nolf's tension in his Flo interview over Dake coming to NLWC. And, Nolf is not one to generally show a lot of emotion.

Nolf is my all time favorite as well. Given the prep I was suprised by the result in terms of growth & closing the gap vs their last meeting.

Having had some time to reflect, we should give credit where credit is due. Dake is a unicorn who is not only a world champion, but he is arguably still in his prime and getting younger every year. Right now he remains the very best in the world and one of USA's best ever.

Nolf has time to prepare a little differently for the Olympic trials. Nolf's time will come, just not this weekend.

Yep. in his most recent Flo interview, he said he had "grown" and felt it a struggle to get to weight.
From a recent post of mine: Recent Flo interview with Aaron regarding his upcoming matches against David. His talk about his weight caught my attention. He mentioned his walking around weight is in the 203 range and how he will never wrestle 184 again. He said he has grown a lot lately. For all the talk of how, relatively speaking, Penn State wrestlers cut less weight than others, I am still surprised how much weight many wrestlers still cut. I did not realize Aaron cut that much. I definitely noticed more muscle on Aaron this year.

Nolf doesn't have to like it. The goal of the NLWC is to be the best wrestling club in the world. It is to be the best place to train for wrestling in the world. To accomplish that goal, it cannot turn down a talent like Dake. Dake also brings a lot to NLWC, he is a brilliant technician and tactician, holds his space, and has a lot of unique training modalities. NLWC can learn from Dake and incorporate some it with their existing philosophies.

I don’t (yet) understand all the rules in freestyle (I must not be trying hard enough :)) but read this take on Chance’s four:

I believed his minimal match schedule last year was due to that weight cut.

Would love too see Yaz/Brooks, I feel we just saw 2 of the top 3 guys in the World at 86.
DT‘s win was huge for him, now (sensibly assuming he medals at worlds) he will sit in finals of an ”all in one day” OTT.

I get it that its nice too have everything in one day but I think it we are robbing ourselves of a fresh DT vs a fresh AB best of 3 WAR next April.
