Earlier last season I thought if anyone was going to knock off Zain it'd be Mayes, not Sorensen. Strong, fast, can score a ton of points, but gets scored on too easily. Had some strange losses late.

Looks like those rumors of Pantaleo shirting are false.
The only place I saw that rumor was the Bloodround guys openly wondering whether it would be a good idea given the recent injury to Coon. But they never claimed to have inside knowledge that Michigan was considering it.

Mayes has great quickness, but isn't an accomplished hand fighter. Zain is pretty rough on guys who try long range shots. I think md or very close to it.
Agreed - he'll close in and give him no room to maneuver. Like a good body puncher who moves in close to avoid his opponents jab and pounds on the guy against the ropes

How do you guys feel about Chisko?

Can reach the podium. Will not threaten Zain.
Agreed, imo he's a 7-8 guy, or R12 unless the bracket collapses. Only lost to the best guys (Jordan, Manley, Jack 2x, Mecate, Ashnault, McKenna) last year as a freshman, so doesn't lose to guys he shouldn't. Question is how he'll do up a weight class.

The rankings that matter the most in this weight class (and the 157 class) are 2-8.

I think Sorenson and Mayes are probably a cut above 4-8 here as well. Neither will challenge Zain, but I think those two will be fighting for a spot in the finals in March.

4 guys managed a decision with Zain last year, and all are back. Theobold (8-1 at the NLO, RS last year), Clagon (2-1), Collica (4-1), and Sorenson (4-0, but also was majored at NCAA's). Not sure about Theobold, but the other 3 could hold it to a decision again. Zain is a bad match-up for Mayes, imo.

Soooo, it's possible Zain gets Clagon at the Keystone Classic, Theobold at the Rutgers Dual (@PSU), Sorenson at the Iowa Dual (@Iowa), and Collica possibly at Reno or the NWCA Dual Championship Series...in addition to B1G's and NCAA's.

As good as Zain was last year, it's in his DNA to continue to improve, and not rest on past performance. I believe he and Jason will go back-and-forth in the Most Dominant Wrestler metric.

Didn't see Clagon listed in the preseason ranks. Might be 157# this year?

Maybe...heard those rumors, he's still listed 149 on the Rider roster...while it says 2016-17, it may not be update (sound familiar?).
I've yet to see a team site that contained reliable roster info in the off-season. @andegre has him at 157 and probably put him there for a reason. Maybe he'll chime in since I tagged him.

I am propbably the only Penn State wrestling fan on this board that would be elated if Chisko beat Zain; and unhappy for Zain at the same time. But, I just don't see Zain losing. Ideally, for me, A Chisko V Zain final would be bliss. I would be happy for the winner either way.

Nothing against Chisko, but Zain's my guy!

Sorenson is in his own second tier right now, IMO. He may have some close matches but he didn't lose to anyone not named Retherford last year. Mayes and Jordan have not had his level of success or consistency.
I thought for the most part Micah was pretty consistent last year heading into the postseason

He's a zero time AA that took multiple losses in a mediocre weight before NCAAs. Sorenson has gone 4,2 in his two seasons so far, with his only losses last year being to Retherford. Micah may prove in time that he belongs in his class, but he hasn't proven that yet.

I do think Micah J will do better up a weight and his relatively "poor" post-season performance could well have been due to holding his weight down for so long. That said, his strength is on his feet and Sorenson is very good at neutralizing his opponent on his feet. I think Sorenson will beat him in the mat wrestling.

Would this happen to be the same Tom that I had breakfast with a few years ago in Birmingham, AL?

What does any of that have to do with his consistency during the regular season? That was the point I was making and like tomsc I also believe his post season performance was due in part to holding his weight for so long or did you forget he was a 157/149 2 years ago?

He lost matches during the season. He's not proven to be where Sorensen is. I don't believe he faced Heil, Jack, Ward, McKenna, or Ashnault during the season... I'm not sure what you're trying to argue. I was simply stating that he hasn't proven to be on a tier with Sorensen. That was the point of my initial post to which you responded.

I never stated he was. The only loss he had during the regular season was to Manley. That's what I meant by consistency

Speaking of Manley, I kind of knew it would be our year when Askren on his podcast right before NCAAs and after pairings came out mentioned Manley defaulting out of his tournament. Then he comes out to face Jimmy with a huge knee brace and can't move. Nice and easy 2.5 points right there

I remember talking with a Missouri fan at NCAA's and he said it was known before the tournament that Manley would need knee surgery post-NCAA's before he entered the tournament. But, he wanted to wrestle. Sounds like a gamer!

Yeah, really sucked for him. He was a sitting duck. Jimmy's bad seed helped him in that round. Byers' homerism on that match call cracked me up - he mentioned the injury, but really played up Jimmy somehow turning a corner.
