No PSUer in the rankings.

Also, 10 of the 20 guys in the rankings were not ranked last year.

Seems as though it's J'den Cox's wight class, and then everyone else.

1. Cox (Mizzou)
2. Pfarr (Minny)
3. Haught (VT)
4. Harner (Princeton)
5. Studebacker (Nebraska)
6. Weigel (OK St.)

Maybe he chose to just graduate and move on with his life, but Nathan Burak could have redshirt last year, wrestle this year & he'd be a shoo-in Top 3 this year, giving Iowa a distinct advantage in this weight class.

A number of Iowa fans are very aware of that consequence of Burak wrestling last year!

Nice to see Brett Harner ranked so high. He was a PA high school stud. His senior year 182 lbs. State final, against Jake Taylor, of Bald Eagle Area, which he lost, was somewhat controversial, as it appeared that Harner had a TD in the 3rd, but Taylor, who loved to wrestle at the edge, was ruled OOB. Then in the ultimate ride out, Taylor lifted Harner off his feet and carried him OOB, but the technical violation was not called.

Dice probably saw Harner and Taylor in the ETR final that year, where the two met in the final and Taylor also prevailed in the ultimate ride out.

Norristown HS is not known as a top academic school in the Philadelphia suburbs. However, Harner was #2 in his class, and he had his pick from several Ivies. Harner may have the last laugh, so to speak, as Taylor went to Cornell, and he's not even ranked in Flo's preseason Top 20 at 197.

Yes, saw a ton of Brett's matches. He and my son are good friends, I know Brett very well and those matches were tough to swallow.

Brett is a really, really, really great kid. Smart, personable, polite - impossible not to like and root for him.

Understatement of the Month contest now closed for October.

IIRC Harner attended an area private school, then went to Norristown for his SR year. He was one of a few wrestlers who did so in that offseason. Can't remember why, maybe NHS hired a new coach.

Probably the best wrestler in Norristown High's history was Rick Springman, who became a two-time All American at Penn. So see ... there's a veritable pipeline from Whitehall Road to our nation's finest institutions of higher learning.

Seriously, it's been a few years since I graduated from Norristown High myself, but we had lots kids in my graduating class go onto the Ivies and schools like Haverford, Swarthmore, Colby, Bucknell, F&M, the service academies, etc. There are plenty of problems at Norristown schools, but there have always been plenty of top-end academic types too. Finishing 2nd in his class is plenty impressive.

I was friends with Brett's dad and uncle back in the day. I never met Brett but have followed his wrestling career and was happy when he had a chance to avenge that loss to Jake Taylor in the finals of the Binghamton tourney last year.

Brett was at Norristown for all four years. His father, Mark, has been the coach there for many years.

You are confusing Brett with Shane Springer - who wrestled at LaSalle for a few years before coming back to Norristown to wrestle with his brother. Their dad, Chuck, is an assistant at Norristown. Funny thing is Shane did the same thing in college. Went to Rider, then transferred to Shippensburg to wrestle with his brother, Mike.

Anyone have an opinion or info on who goes for the Blue and White? Can Cassar get to the podium in a wide open weight? Can he stay healthy? Is Kellen Stout the man?

Mark took over for his brother Steve about 10 years ago. Last I heard, Steve was coaching at Connestoga but still teaching at Norristown.

I think he is still in IC training with HWC. I think his lady friend graduates this year so I don't really understand why he didn't if he planned to stay.

Steve was at Conestoga, but left a couple of years ago. He's still coaching JOs for MAWA, but don't think he's involved with coaching in HS right now.

Maybe McCutcheon? If he can't make 174 and loses the 184 spot to Nickal, I imagine he would give 197 a crack. I know his height is sub-optimal, but I imagine he'd be a handful for Cassar or Stout

Because he'd still have to be attending class under that scenario

Take one or two grad classes for free. Wrestle for the Hawks. Make the finals vs J'Den and help the Hawks towards a NC.

Oh, what could have been for Iowa....

He was an academic all-American. I think he could handle the work load.
That might not be the question.

If you graduate in 4 years and have no use (or no immediate use) for grad school, then the 5th year is a waste of time (academically, career-wise, and financially). You get some offset toward a degree you don't want or need, that does you no good unless you pay for the next year entirely out of your own pocket. Or can make you look less attractive if you start without completing, than if you never started.

Or maybe he pulled a Pat Tillman and told the coaches he had other things to do with his life.

Thank you.

Maybe Nathan thought 5 years wrestling was enough. He did spend one year at OTC before coming to Iowa. I'm sure the choice was left up to him.
