  • I wanted to get mine in before Flo :). But I am using Flo's Weight class rankings with a system starting with 50 pts for anyone ranked 1st in their weight class and working downward as such:

1. 50 .......... 11. 14
2. 44 .......... 12. 12
3. 39 .......... 13. 10
4. 35 .......... 14. 9
5. 31 .......... 15. 8
6. 27 .......... 16. 7
7. 24 .......... 17. 6
8. 21.......... 18. 5
9. 18 .......... 19. 4
10 16 .......... 20. 3

YES.....I did this earlier in the year but rankings changed and a few new commits were added.

How accurate will I be? Well...in 2013 Flo rated Pitt as having the #2 recruiting class in the country......and in 2015 they had West Virginia's recruiting class ranked higher than Ohio State's that included Myles Martin, Ke-Shawn Hayes and Kollin Moore. .I hope to be a tad more accurate than that :)

Updates as of 5/6/2018 ONLY Seniors included ENJOY!

Rankings: Individual rankings at weight class and total points:

1. Penn State ....3(126), 8(126), 1(132), 2(160), 1(182), 2(195), 3(Hwt)..........287 Pts.
2. Ohio State ....2(120), 9(132), 2(138), 1(145), 6(160), 4(170), 12(170), 1(195). 280 Pts.
3. Missouri .3(113), 1(126), 13(152), 10(160), 15(160), 11(170), 19(195), 4(220)176 Pts.

11. Princeton .....4(126), 8(138), 10(152), 18(152), 10(170)......... ............ .93 Pts.
12.Oklahoma St. .1(170), 4(182)......................................................... ...........64 Pts.
14 Northwestern..17(160), 7(182), 5(195)...................................... ...............61 Pts.
15.Rutgers...........5(120), 16(138), 9(182)..................................... ................ 56 Pts.

20..Purdue...........7(145), 9(170).......................................................................42 Pts.

Others: Arizona State:39, Fresno State 39, Virginia 37, Iowa 35, Cornell 31
.....
NOTES: Obviously Penn State and Ohio State are clear top two. I could very well remove the 94 points for Brooks and Beard since they will not be attending PSU next year.......dropping PSU to a distant 2nd.....but......It is MY rankings and I chose not to :). INFINITY and BEYOND!.... It will give people something to complain about :). Some schools got multiple ranked guys while others got fewer but have real studs. I tried to set up my points allocation to include/reflect that. That said.....If anyone wants to argue that both Minnesota and Michigan should be ahead of Missouri because of the quality of their fewer recruits.....I would agree with you. It is just how the points came out :). I'll keep tweaking my system in hopes of making it more accurate. Iowa and Cornell may be at the bottom this year but they were number 1-2 in my last year's computations. Cornell also has several highly rated juniors who have verballed for next year....PSU currently has one.....and we have heard all too frequently about Iowa's transfers ( not included here )....Interesting to compare.... ENJOY

NOTE: Yes....I triple-checked the math....Pitt did indeed make the top 20. Ice Cream in Hell :)

Thanks for doing the ground work. It offers a good base for discussion. If we're ranking dual potential, I like those rankings, but when ranking to tourney potential I think it gives too much credit for volume.

Our NC run has been fueled mostly with top-10 wrestlers ... #1 or #2 in their weight class. The final tally would indicate that Missouri far outdistanced Michigan, but at the end of the day Michigan's 2 #1 recruits could out point Missou's entire class.

Using my mostly subjective opinion, my tourney ranking would look like this.

1. PSU, tOSU
2. Missouri, Minn, Mich
3. Stan, ISU
4. ????

One thing I would suggest changing is lessening the points for 113 and 120. Or trying to combine them into 1 weight because obviously all those kids are going 125 in college. And frankly 126 is probably overvalued as well in comparison with the rest of the weights because a lot of those kids will go 125 as well.

But yes give me Minnesota and Michigan’s classes all day over Missouri’s

Outstanding perspective and would love to see how you shaked out previous classes. Bottomline, as mentioned earlier, the super powers of late are doing it with securing top 10 P4P wrestlers in consecutive classes. The OkSU and Iowa model of grabbing top 20-50 guys is outdated. They are switching as it’s an Arms race!

I did take note of my other rankings and those of the "experts". I do agree that the real studs are much more valuable.....hence my graduated scale down....ie. bigger differences between the top guys. I still feel it needs tweaked. One problem is that the 4th best guy at a particular weight may very well be a better prospect than the number 1 guy at a different weight. My next plan is to do a similar ranking using the big board and then comparing the two to better see how they can be manipulated until they are very close to the same and reflect an even greater weighting to the super prospects. Look at last year....does anyone not believe that S. Lee, Diakamahollis and Fix were several notches above the rest? I was planning on doing that in the same thread until I realized it was 3:30 Am and I was still tweaking this one :). Maybe tonight.

Yes...I know......Tanner had me on the line until just a few minutes ago. Must have been something I said :)

Maybe the tweak is just adding a value based off pound for pound ranking.

Top 1-2 in class get 20 point jump
3-10 10 point bump
10-20 5 point bump
21-50 1 point bump

Something like that...you the math guy! I would think something like this would add points to the true studs

I looked at that ...but going back over previous year's rankings....there are times where you almost have to interject your own feelings. Consider using your premise....Yanni gets only 10 pts. ....half as many as Fix and S.Lee....and the same as 4-10 ( Desprez, Singletary etc. ). There are times when the number 3 & 4 guy are far better than 8,9 and 10. Still trying to work on it but a lot of variables to consider.

While this is true, NO one has a formula to predict future sucess (see Gabe Dean). I thought you were just trying to come up with best way to rank the incoming classes.

Nolf was ranked what? 5th? Bo 8th? They are the best 2 from that class, but you can't predict that (well obviously Cael can), but for us mere mortals, we can do the best we can do. I chimed in because I like what you're trying to do..

I believe they are, in fact, PSU bound. Next year it is believed that Brooks will take an Olympic redshirt year, while Beard will also redshirt? Penn State will have, in the two weights where Beard and Brooks are expected to go, Bo Nickal and Shakur Rasheed, and possibly Matt McCutcheon. This is probably the very best situation at those two weights as anyone has in the nation.

Awesome...thanks, Notso!!!

They're both grayshirting -- deferred enrollment.

Brooks will train at the USOTC -- not an Olympic shirt. Neither can take an Olympic shirt next year -- that only applies to athletes after enrollment (plus the associated eligibility criteria).

I think you mean Anthony Cassar. McCutcheon's eligibility is up.

Rutgers (almost) perennial top 10 recruiting class
Speaking of Perennial Top 10 Rutgers ... their 2019 recruiting cycle is a slow motion train wreck. That is a very strong NJ class, and they're missing out left and right.

From TOM's 2019 recruiting rankings (updated in April):

6 - Chris Foca - 174 - Iowa State
7 - Michael Colaiocco - 125 - Penn
9 - Ryan Anderson - 141
11 - Julian Ramirez - 174 - Cornell
15 - Nick Raimo - 141 - Arizona State
19 - Ricky Cabanillas - 157
22 - JoJo Aragona - 149
27 - Sammy Alvarez - 125 - NC State
28 - Robert Kanniard - 174 - Rutgers
33 - Jacob Cardenas - 184
39 - Chris Cannon - 133
86 - Lewis Fernandes - 285 - Virginia Tech
97 - Josh McKenzie - 197 - likely football

Given their recruiting prowess, they'll land max 1 more of the guys listed above, plus Delvecchio's brother, and claim they're on the rise.

According to my rubric......they would need a top 3 stud or 3 recruits that average 10 in their class. Ice Cream in Hell is more likely me thinks.

Nolf was ranked what? 5th? Bo 8th? They are the best 2 from that class, but you can't predict that (well obviously Cael can), but for us mere mortals, we can do the best we can do. I chimed in because I like what you're trying to do..

Pretty much agree with that. HS rankings are not a perfect predictor of college success, but there is certainly a correlation. I might be wrong, but I think 8 of the 10 national champs were top-10 recruits.

Giving every top-10 kid a bonus will miss the mark sometimes, but I imagine there will be more AA hits than misses.

They're both grayshirting -- deferred enrollment.

Brooks will train at the USOTC -- not an Olympic shirt. Neither can take an Olympic shirt next year -- that only applies to athletes after enrollment (plus the associated eligibility criteria).

And it has to be an Olympic year which the 2018-19 season is not.
