As a wrestling fan, I found some of this content pretty cool:

Can't imagine Cael ever giving this kind of access to his home though. Wouldn't be shocked if he kept his medals in a box in the garage like Kolat either.

Flo gets a lot of negative reviews here (some of it is justified), but nobody else is giving us unfettered access to a legend like Dan Gable. Kudos to them and Gable for this excellent content.

Look at all those medals! And that wrestling room! Lots of good stuff in those videos.

I don't know about his Chris Campbell story. My ex-wife grew up in Cranford, NJ, a town neighboring Westfield (she graduated HS the same year as Campbell and saw him wrestle in high school) and was a big wrestling fan. The story she told me in the mid-1970s was that Chris Campbell's mom wouldn't allow him to wrestle (my recollection is that it was for a religious reason but I am trying to confirm that story) until his junior year of high school, so he had never wrestled before that. It was quite a shock to people in the area when he won states with an undefeated record as a senior.

My ex-wife's recollection is confirmed and verified. His mom was a Jehovah's Witness:

Minus the religious aspect, sounds almost identical to the Heselrig story that I've only recently learned about.

I was raised a Jehovah's Witness and was never able to wrestle in High School because of it. I know all to well the reality of it. Unfortunate circumstance for many over the years

Ditto, but I was allowed to wrestle, probably because my dad was a non-believer.
And yes, unfortunate indeed.

Haselrig wrestled throughout junior high school and high school (just not in a high school program). The school district dropped wrestling when he was heading to 9th grade. At the time, that would have been his last year of junior high. While certainly not the ideal situation, he continued to train and wrestle in tournaments. This continued through 12th grade. He was fortunate to have a high level Heavyweight training partner (Bob Fleck from nearby Westmont school district) to roll with.
This doesn't make his accomplishments any less remarkable. In a sense, maybe it was even more commendable. He stayed the course despite nearly zero assistance from his school district. Johnstown resurrected wrestling after Haselrig was long gone. They claim him of course, but what he did, he did on his own.

may I ask why they are opposed to wrestling?

Gable would be ran out of the biz doing things like this today.

Interesting. Didn't know that Jehovahs weren't allowed to wrestle. Next time they're on my porch I'm gonna tell them "If you can show me how to hit a high crotch, I'll listen to your whole spiel."

From my recollection of upbringing 30 years ago, it wasn't that wresting was the issue, it was extracurricular sports as they took away from family time and church throughout the week. The less associations with non-believers the better.

Kind of why, technically, the Sandersons were/are "sinners" and not following LDS commandments on Sundays. :)
