Wow, I have been reading through some posts on this board and had to keep asking myself if many posters on here are true Penn State fans, or just complainers. We lose 1 close game on the road where our players and coaches seemed out of sorts, and all of a sudden, we are terrible! Now of course I am exaggerating, but give CJF and our team some degree of respect! They tried to change their predictability factor on offense by targeting Justin Shorter on the first 2 passes, but Shorter wasn't up to the task. We then tried to get to a hot QB by blitzing and he burned us by passing to the open part of the field left vacant by the blitzing CB or LB. With all the mistakes and bad breaks we had, we were still about 1 yard off on a pass into the end zone that likely would have won the game for us with 1 minute to go. Look, there was no doubt that we didn't play up to our true potential Saturday, but we also didn't play like we cashed it in. The truly big game of this season for us has always been OSU. It seems that 99% of you have already put an L for us on your schedule, but I for one still have hope! We win that and we're in the playoffs. We loss that and we're likely 10-2 and may still in a NY6 game. We have a 1st year starting QB who is getting better every week. Yes, he didn't win for us Saturday, but that L was not just on him. WE ARE getting better, and I refuse to be brought down by complaining Penn State fans who over-react to 1 loss when we are still in control of our own destiny for this season right now!

Cool, let's talk after the O$U game, they are going to beat us like we owe them money. If we beat Indiana and of course we will beat Rutgers, I will consider this season largely a success. I thought this teams ceiling was 10-2 before the season started, so no complaints if that is how it ends. I'd like to see a bowl win badly.

Well, last week he threw 3 INTs, which is exactly the number he threw going into last week's game. I for one hope he gets a heck of a lot better this week, and continues that trend into next week!

I'm not going to bend over for osu. They should have destroyed us in 2014 and they needed the refs to bail them out. F them. And if they beat us, F them again because their QB shouldn't even be on the field.

The old you're not a "true Penn State fan" if you take exception to the mistakes made on the field and some coaching decisions in a particular game. Nothing personal, but you or anyone else is not in a position to decide who is or is not a true fan.

Cool, let's have some frank discussion about Ohio State. PSU is 9th in all time victories OSU is 2nd. The series record is 14-20 OSU on the field. 4 of the PSU wins came in 1964 or before. Its NOT a rivalry by definition (at least how we've rated Pitt as a "rival"). Unfortunately since 2000 its even worse 5-13. So is it the fault of James Franklin? LOL.....PSU has a climb to be considered a rival of Ohio State. By the way, as you know, the overall #1 in all Time victories is Michigan. Pretty good division, don't you agree? The big ten also has Nebraska in the top 10. So let's kick everybodies asses like the good old times......that vs Ohio State never were.

I think you are 100% correct, based on what we see here. Those that take exception to coaching decisions and mistakes on the field are indeed PSU Fans.

I'm not entirely sure what your point is honestly, but yes, O$U has largely Owned us, especially in the shoe. I am not necessarily suggesting it's Franklin's fault, to the contrary, I think Franklin has done his best coaching against OSU, far better than anything Michigan or other conference brethren have done. He had the sanctions to deal with initially and really should have beat them without the aide of the refs when Hackenberg was Quarterbacking this team, that alone is damn impressive. The two one point losses the last few years, however disappointing, have proven how far we have come. All that said, they are just operating on a different level right now then us. They are more alabama than alabama this year. Dynamic QB that can hurt you in multiple ways, top level RB's and receivers, talent all over the place, and a coaching staff that has a very mature and productive approach to fitting it all together. If we were home, I'd think we can hang with them into the 4th. My fear is they beat us so bad it sets the program back and puts a really bad taste in everyone's mouth about this season. O$U always wants to send a message to us, and they are coming. I predict something like 48-17.

I only brought it up because you suggested we talk about it. I saw no need to wait, losing to Ohio State is pretty much a tradition.

Yeah, fair. It's disappointing, and they aren't going anywhere. We are going to have to get better than them or equal to them in all phases and I just don't see that happening for a myriad of reasons. They get better players, I think they have better coaching(not a slam on Franklin, just O$U is the top of the crust), and they have a University wholly committed to winning at all costs.

I think Franklin has us on track to win once every 3 years.Been very close lately. I'm comfortable with the type of kid he brings to the program. I love to win as much as anyone, but I hope PSU never "sells its soul" to do so. If and when that happens, I'll find another hobby.

I agree that the worst thing that can happen to us is we get dismantled by the Luckeyes. This puts a negative damper on the entire season. It could relegate us to a non NY6 bowl and then we lose that.

I guess the OP has a different definition of getting better than everyone else. I think the world of Clifford but his performance last weekend was horrendous. As were the refs non calls and calls made by the B1G Dicks. One pass to shorter was not catchable by Man or God and the bounce pass to a wide open Friermuth .... well bounce passes count as assists in basketball. not football.

I hope Clifford makes the step this week of starting the game with poise and confidence and knowing and executing the whole playbook to the whole receiver corps.. I have confidence he will. The Minnesota loss might turn out to be a blessing.

PSU ran into a buzz saw Sat. They damn near pulled it out, despite a sloppy game. I wouldn't be in a hurry to file the obituary yet.

So all-time stats are relevant, but PSU’s victories before 1964 are not, though results under 2012 sanctions are.

By your logic, OSU has a long ways to climb to match Michigan as a rival, although Michigan’s victories before 1900 simultaneously don’t count so I guess go figure?

I’ve been around the Audibles board throughout its history and lurked on this one for a while and I gotta say, this new “PSU was never that good” narrative is a recent phenomena whose origins I cannot place.

Look, Ohio State has been the class of the Big 10 for the last 20 years. I don't see how anybody could argue otherwise. If you are basing a rivalry solely on an equitable division of wins and losses, nobody is their rival; but through the years Penn State has played them as well as anybody. Every year it is the same thing. They are going to blow us out; we have no chance, blah, blah, blah; and while they have won the majority of the games, when was the last time Ohio State blew out a good Penn State team? We lost the last two games, but Ohio State led for a total of 5 minutes in the two game combined. Both years Ohio State was supposed to be this unstoppable juggernaut. Both years we dominated large portions of the game, but couldn't close the deal. The same thing was said before the 2014 and 2016 games. We know what happened in 2016, and we lost in overtime to the eventual National Champion in 2014. Even in 2015 when a very mediocre Penn State team lost 38-10, Penn State hung around till the 4th quarter of that game.

Ohio State is going to be favored by a very comfortable margin, and they deserve to be. I believe they are the best team in the country this year. We could go out there and get hammered , but I am not conceding anything. Penn State lost a game on the road, in which they did not play very well. That said, they still managed to give themselves a chance to win the game, and probably would have were it not for two very questionable referee decisions on our final drive. This week is important. Indiana is a good team. I am glad we are playing somebody like them instead of some creampuff. It gives us a chance to get our mojo back a little bit. This team is capable of beating anybody, if they play well. I am not naïve; I know how good Ohio State is, but I am not about to bury us or dismiss our chances.

One could argue none of the 3 should have been interceptions. Shorter didn’t contest the DB well at all. Granted, the ball was under thrown, much to Shorter’s detriment. Best case he catches it, worst case should have been incomplete. The other 2 were a direct result of zebras swallowing whistles, not calling DPI on 2 obvious muggings.

Getting better doesn't mean he never makes mistakes. He had a bad game on Saturday, no question. But I think he's been improving each week and took a step back last week. That's to be expected. And I'm not sure which throw to Shorter you're talking about and the pass to Freirmuth, Clifford hit is hand on a lineman's helmet and couldn't follow through.

I'll never understand a supposed fan of team almost gleefully hoping his team gets whipped. Just makes no sense to me. OSU should have destroyed us in 2014 and 2016 and didn't. It will be a challenge for us to win there, no question. But man is it weak to not only concede defeat but to assume annihilation. Why in the world would you spend time rooting for a team that you don't think can be competitive with the best teams on its schedule. Get a new hobby.

I can root for a team I expect to lose, it's quite possible actually, I am a jets fan too. I'll tell you what though, I dont need to be moralized by some internet tough guy about what I can and cant do with my fandom. Sorry if it doesnt fit in your vaccum to have multiple perspectives. I will not find a new hobby, but thanks for the suggestion.

Look, Sean Clifford was nervous as a whore in church last Saturday and that is part of his learning process in hostile environments. He still is a great QB and I can guaranty you he will be much better this week against Indiana and the following weeks vs OSU. The Minny game may just be a blessing in disguise!

Moralized? Good grief. I just don't think any part of being a fan at this level of CFB includes wistfully longing for your team to get wiped out by its chief rival. Apparently, you do. So be it.

Hang on, I call B.S., so because i think, logically, that ohio state is better than we are I am wistfully longing for my team to get wiped out? Quite the straw man, you'd make a great wife to argue with. I can assure you I am every bit the fan you are, but I do expect us to really struggle against them, if that makes me a bad fan in your eyes, then "so be it."

Did you watch the game? He couldn't follow through on the first two of the passes (the first one Shorter should have made a play on) and on the last INT the receiver it was meant for had been pulled down.

There is no excuse for losing that game. Minnie 6 **** PSU 40+**** and we lose. There are big problems and it starts with the coaching staff. This game shouldn't have been close. Period
