Historic match outside at the FB stadium between two legendary programs, with deep National Championship records.

If you have BTN2Go, it's free access.

Need your cable provider user name and password.

I believe it may be free for those who have the BTN on their cable subscription.

Enjoy!

Thanks TJ.

You're very welcome amalone.

The Marstellar match was wild, with many unexpected things happening.

Won't give it away for those who want to watch it.

BTW - Believe this will be shown in replay on the BTN tomorrow night, Sunday at 7 PM.
Check local listings for the time.

Iowa up 10-6 on Ok. St. at the break:

Gilman (IA) maj. decision (had a nice unsportsmanlike moment when he shoved Klimara in the back to get him into referee's position)
Clark (IA) with a dec.
Heil (OK St) with a dec.
Sorenson (IA) with a dec.
Marstellar (Ok. St.) decision (very lackluster performance, came 1 stall warning away from being DQ'd.)

Told you all....God is a Hawk fan. Looked to be a perfect day. Awesome crowd...It seemed bigger than the 42 and change.

Smith usually has them peak late in the year and he had better. They need points from more weights than us given our higher number of top end guys, but efforts like Klimara's aren't going to get it done.

I say this after only following written pbp.

Great match and an unbelievable atmosphere. Wonderful way to help promote the sport.

New era for college wrestling, with the new rule changes.

Now a near fall (turning the opponent's back toward the mat for 5 seconds), scores 4 points for the wrestler. So, it encourages more high scoring matches, because 4 points are a lot of points during a match. Wrestlers are more likely to try to turn their opponents, instead of just getting riding time. It should make for more exciting wrestling matches.

====

The sad part is that this has come after David Taylor and Ed Ruth are no longer college wrestlers.

Both were incredible point scoring machines. If they had had 4 points for a near fall, they would have racked up even more huge Tech Fall scores for the Nittany Lions and perhaps even improved on PSU's dual match win record.

This new near fall 4 point rule change favors the "Pennsylvania" high scoring offense wrestling style over the "Iowa" low score defensive style. Cael Sanderson was the master at scoring lots of bonus points and that's how the Nittany Lions approach their matches. Lock Haven wasn't a big test for the Nits, but if it's any indication, this year's Penn State team is bursting with high bonus point scoring potential.

Will be a fun year watching Penn State and BT wrestling.

God... is a PENN STATE fan... that's why he made his sky blue and white.

Fantastic show put on by Iowa University and what a great weather day for the match. Awesome day for an Iowa fan, You get to see your #2 Iowa wrestling team beat the Cowboys and shut up the guys in the stands throwing up mock pistols... and then go out and tailgate... eat great food and then go out and watch your #5 football team maybe make it into the BCS Playoffs. Makes for a full and exciting day. Great promotion of the sport and it came off very well watching on BTN. Fan reaction and sound level was similar to Rec Hall... Chief. ;)

Also, shuts up Mike Tognetti about the PonyBOYS winning a National Title.

For the record... Matt Millin said at half time that Cael was watching the proceedings in Kinnick and seeing how the match went. I have a good feeling, Penn State will put 60,000 in Beaver Stadium easily for a match against Ohio State or Iowa.

Tom Ryan was too -- but he has the additional challenge of installing UV lamps across the Horseshoe.

60,000? Doubtful.
All you have to do is see the RVs (I.e. Nittany Cruisers) stretching out across lots and fields on a football weekend to see that it's entirely possible. Big events draw gawkers - make it an event, entice tailgaters doing nothing else in the morning, and voila. Combine it with the wrestling fanatics from hotbeds like Easton, Pittsburgh, Lock Haven, etc coming just for the match, and it's not crazy to think. Hell, Penn State and others draw 70k plus for spring football - about the most boring spectacle known to man.

60,000 sounds like a very doable number at Beaver Stadium, if combined with a Football Game.

Penn State generally gets that many and sometimes considerably more for the Spring Blue-White Game.

Actually, while that is a nice number, if they promoted it well on a home football weekend, against a good team, I'd be a bit surprised if they couldn't exceed 60,000.

Just guessing of course. Would depend a lot on the weather too. Must say, Iowa and OK St picked an absolutely wonderful November day for this match. That alone had to be a big boost for their attendance and may be very hard to match in other Big Ten locations in November.

Great day for College Wrestling. Plus, it was a very fun match to watch, with lots of talent and a cliff hanger ending. Congratulations to the Hawkeye and Okie State staffs and administrations for pulling this off so well. Well done!

God might just be a wrestling fan ... Looked like a great event.

John Smith might be an Iowa fan, though. How else to account for the fact that he took his team in there out of shape and apparently hasn't mentioned anything to them about the new rules?

If you the put the mat at the 50 yd line... You could get 60,000 plus in Beaver Stadium. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if it was more.

Cael... your move. :)

Nah I don't see it

Consider that besides the Nittany Lion fans, Pennsylvania is the #1 state for producing NCAA tournament qualifiers, by a long shot. So, there are lots of high schools with good programs, within driving distance of Happy Valley.

Plus, PA has multiple NCAA wrestling programs. Who knows, but perhaps some of those big wrestling fans for those programs would like to participate in a historic event.

All guesses, but PA is the heart of high school wrestling and nearby states of NJ, OH and NY have also made appearances as the # 2, 3 or 4 states in producing NCAA tournament talent. Then, don't discount Maryland.

March 18, 2015

Pennsylvania is top dog....again.

When the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship brackets were released, there were

48 wrestlers from the Keystone State
scattered across the 10 weight classes.
Ohio is second on the list with 36.
New Jersey checks in with 30 qualifiers
,
followed by Illinois (26) and California (19).
Iowa, surprisingly, is sixth with 16.
So, consider a Penn State vs Ohio State outdoor match. Both teams have football stadiums that seat over 100,000 fans and both schools' fans travel well. They are neighboring wrestling powerhouse states.

Penn State is geographically located near the middle of the largest body of NCAA tournament producing high schools. It's within driving distance for a large segment of the US population. Those factors, plus the huge draw for PSU football games, might make for a very interesting total... Ha... "IF" the weather was decent. A warmer November day like Iowa had today and there could be a huge turnout in Beaver Stadium for an event like this.

Just saying...

God will bring thunder snow and ice on your outdoor attempt. He is a Hawk fan! What a beautiful day it was to watch wrestling outside! Perfect

Spencer Lee was rumored to be there and on "commit watch"....lmao
I may pee myself Yellow and then give myself a BLACK eye. Clucas bringing the house down. Seriously, Clucas... I nearly peed myself before I got to the bathroom!!! :)

Iowa wins with a record crowd, great for the sport. Also tempers expectations for OKST a little bit. Collica hype definitely down after today. Still got a lot to figure out. 33,57,84,97 will all be Q's for them.

If we matched up vs Iowa today I think we take 25,41,49,57,97 definitely. 74,84 toss-up although I would take our guys with the way they wrestled yesterday. 33 IA favored obviously, 65 can't tell although I'd like Rasheed v Rhoads, and Jan it's too earlier to know although Stoll would have to be favored.

Vs OKST I think we'd take 25,33,49,57,84,97 definitely. 41 toss up, 65 OKST, 74 probably a toss and HWT OKST.

Good opening weekend for us thus far. Continue the momentum in a VERY good match tomorrow on ESPN3 (the Tres)

I honestly couldn't believe reading the comments about how he might commit while there. Listen, Iowa is a great program and obviously a national power but why would Spencer leave PA/Penn State when it has everything Iowa has and more? It just doesn't make logical sense to me. I guess a lot of the same arguments were made for Chance Marstellar at the time and he went but I still don't see Spencer leaving the Keystone State.

Iowa has had success at the lower weights so it wouldn't be surprising. You're wrestling world class guys at your weight every day.

That's not to say we don't have our own talent down low. Have had a lot more success recently and Nico will be a player on the international stage. Gomez has also gotten a little bigger but he's a world silver.

Spencer will make the best choice for himself at the end of the day. I agree the 'commit watch' is a little silly but I didn't see those exact words. Then again I did hear a rumor that he's getting married and the wedding is in Kinnick tonight, so that could spell trouble for us.

No question..."commit watch" was my term...the discussion was around him being awed by the atmosphere and committing while there and an "insider" said there would be an "east coast" surprise this weekend to which people were guessing he might commit.

Listen, he'd be battling with Suriano, Cortez, Nico (who likely will be in the NLWC), so I'm not buying the "he'd have better partners in the room" argument. Sorry, the room at Penn State is just as good.

Where are those comments? I didn't see that from anyone being completely serious or anyone remotely credible. I was actually surprised there wasn't more of this from people talking out their ass

Spencer was wearing a Hawkeye Wrestling Club sweatshirt which looked damn good in him;)

Yea, I heard they wouldn't let him in the stadium until he put it on :D

That was a fun dual to watch. Great day to be a hawk fan with that atmosphere and a big win.

Watching Marsteller was painful, I had visions of A. Alton. He needs to go up to 165 and back up ringer. How Cooper was unable to win that match is beyond me??

Iowa is going to be very interesting this year. 6 AAs most likely and then 4 weights that need a bit of work. OSU did not look as good as advertised but it's early.

Is Brooks that good this year or is Rodgers that bad, lol, probably a little of both.
