Former Michigan OC Matt Weiss indicted

Safe to assume this is included as well into the NCAA investigation currently going on with the Michigan Football program ? Sign stealing etc?
I am not sure but recall comments regarding hacking into opponents' databases. This is a very, very serious offense and is probably worse than the sign stealing unless some of the sign stealing came as a result of getting into competitors football information. And given the depth spelled out in the indictment, one has to believe that hacking into football DBs was in there. An indictment wouldn't care if it was football or not. Just another count.

The article does say this "Weiss is accused of downloading personal information and medical data of more than 150,000 athletes". So one has to believe he didn't do it for their facebook or Instagram accounts to get to 150k. You'd have to get into mass databases like OSU or PSUs, etc.

He had to hire hackers to get such a massive database from various sources. And those wouldn’t play cheap.

If this is provable it deserves the death penalty like no other past scandals. It went far beyond just cheating on recruiting or NCAA rules.

Eleven Warriors says it was mostly gals.

"According to a criminal complaint obtained by WXYZ, Weiss “primarily targeted female college athletes. He researched and targeted these women based on their school affiliation, athletic history, and physical characteristics.”

Dumb question, but what is the theory of what he did with this unauthorized information? Did he recruit these athletes, how did the sign stealing element fit in? So he has all this data, even social media posts, how did he utilize this to Michigan footballs gain specifically.

Right now, they've released no connection between the football program and Weiss, specifically. That may come but right now I am not seeing anything other than allegations of Weiss' personal transgressions.

Thanks, and I'm reading it was mostly female athletes, so this is voyeurisms more than anything.
Well, we don't know. At least I don't. For example, I don't know how you can get private information on 150,000 student-athletes without accessing the university databases. It is possible that he like the girls but also had information on PSU and/or Ohio State players. We'll see but I am not ruling anything out, at this point.

This is a nothing burger for UM football. It sounds like he hacked into a university’s data base of students and was looking for attractive girls in a voyeuristic manor. He should’ve just googled hot college girls and saved himself all that extra work. All kidding aside, it may be that he is some kind of deviant not trying to scout teams is my take.

The guy was finding women he thought were attractive and used identity markers to gain access to social media accounts and I cloud to steak pics and videos.

How much time did this guy have on his hands? That’s quite the effort.

But he is a Michigan man who attended the Harvard of the midwest so he's really an upstanding citizen. Right??

Michigan fired him in January 2023 for computer offenses so this investigation has been going on for a long time.

Upper class guy, went to prep school in Conn., then undergrad at Vanderbilt, then master's at Stanford where he was a grad assistant coach when Harbaugh was there. Then worked for John Harbaugh at the Ravens, then Jim hired him at Michigan to coach QBs.

well, "sick" and "smart" and not mutually exclusive. But you have to be pretty dumb to do what he did, allegedly. He gave up a job making millions per year when he could have simply got an online subscription to dozens of sites for a few dollars.

It simply makes no sense.

I've got a very good friend, who is very well off, who insists she's got to steal a glass from every cool bar she visits. She's gotten them in St. Petersberg, Russia, and in China. What is the sense? I guess just getting away with something.

Smart people do stupid things. Incredibly smart people do incredibly dumb things.
Smart people do things like this because they think they're smart enough to get away with it.

If you go back to the premierdrum posts at 11W, Weiss getting discovered is where the sign stealing data initially began to be investigated.

Wow! Whatever you put into the digital universe remains there forever, sort of like the background radiation from the Big Bang. There might be a pun in there if you look hard enough.

Don't send things electronically you wouldn't want your parents to see.
Kids today are crazy. Anyone who posts intimate pictures on platforms that are so easily hacked are out of their minds!

Good God, did those Ba$tards do anything legal ? Unreal
No and their arrogance made them believe they would never get caught but if they did they were to big and powerful for anyone to come against them. OOPS that light at the end of the tunnel for Michigan is the ignition of The Mother Of All Bombs.

He should work for the IRS.

I know you are joking but I have to wonder how somebody working on their own (supposedly) can get personal data due to hacking for 150,000 athletes. There simply isn't enough time in the day to hack 150,000 individuals. So this had to be done by hacking some kind of larger database like PSU or tOSU's systems. If that is the case, this may be the tip of the iceberg.

So far, it looks like the indictments are personal and do not involve UM. But I suspect that will change. I have no evidence to say that other than if this guy lacked a moral compass and had access to other school's databases, he would not stop because he had a moral obligation to not cheat at football.

I don't give two shits what the reason is. This deserves the death penalty.
The reason matters....people are still so bitter about what happened here they can't think logically. What about this warrants the death penalty? If it was here you'd say it wasn't about football...accurately...like Sandusky.

Most of the time they will just give you the glass if you ask.

I know! Right?

Honestly, I think this comes down to life being way too easy. Somehow, you've got to get your jollies by stealing some minimal piece of something and feel like you've gotten away with something. I don't get it at all.
