it appears that Jalen Hurd has reached out to CJF and Jo Mo on twitter. Could be interesting.

Big guy who can run, block and catch.

We could Get him for 1 year.

We would have killed for a back like him from 2012-14. Saquon, Sanders and Robinson would severely limit any PT for him.

Where did he reach out at? There is no tweet from Hurd to them.

There saying he is staying at UT.

I don't know a lot about this situation, but there seems to be a lot of drama in Tennessee

Maybe there is room here for him as a TE or something, but we certainly wouldn't need him for WR or RB. And Dalton and Bowers will be back in play behind MG. Seems like there would be better schools for this guy to go to get exposure.

I assume he has a redshirt year coming? I think he's a junior, right?

I can't believe a guy like him would be able to handle playing behind Barkley. But Barkley may be gone after next year anyway.

You win because you have more great players, more great athletes than other teams . This has been the Bama formula since Saban arrived. No offense to Saban's coaching abilities, but the main reason he wins is because he has more great players, more great athletes than other teams .... Jalen Hurd is a great player / great athlete. You find a way to get his talents onto a field.

You don't take him simply because he is a great player. What is his character coming out of the situation, was he a "ring leader" in a negative sense? What is his academic standing? Accurate background research would have to be accomplished. This PSU team has great chemistry and has gone through some incredibly difficult times that would have crushed other coaches and players. PSU held together. Franklin should be very wary of taking Hurd under these circumstances unfolding @ UT. This team, as comprised and with another strong class coming in, is set to take off next year.

WE ARE...PENN STATE!!!

Would it be too picky to say Hurd would fill a scholarship for 2 years, but have only 1 year on the field? And CJF might prefer to use that slot otherwise?

That's what I was thinking. Two year spot, for one year as a backup, most likely.

I'd pass.

I don't know about his academic, but he was very good until they changed the OC this year, he was thinking of leaving but Butch convinced him to stay. He was 5th in rushing all time in UTK

A kid quits on his team and teammates after a 3 game losing streak instead of waiting until the end of the season. You can have him...called a quitter, whiner, loser and many other endearing terms from where I am from. Kid looks to be all about himself...I would pass.

Wasn't true when Saban first went to Bama, so how do you account for that? Saban also turned a mediocre LSU team into a National Champion. Of course you get more talented players when you win consistently, but it is nonsense to say that Saban did not "create" his own recruiting success everywhere he's gone by winning on the field first. This is true with all great coaches......winning on the field consistently leads to dominant recruiting, but I think you have the cart before the horse on how it actually works......the coach has to first prove that he can win on the field.

We'll see if the staff is interested. I really don't care much what most fans think anymore to be honest.

Amen. . . . . today I seen an article on social media saying that even though we have won 4 in a row, we now have a qb controversy. . . Like where in the heck Do these people come from?

You could be right about him, but down here in TN, they blamed the coaches especially the OC for his departure. And he was also injured during the second half of the game vs SC.

Looking at it a different way, since we are having a surprisingly good run that may pay recruiting dividends, do we want to give up a spot for him? If we run the table, January could get pretty interesting.

Hurd would be better off declaring for the draft. He has been out of HS three years, so he qualifies. Don't know what his draft status would be, but that is probably a better option.

Or go the 1AA route for a season and be eligible for the entire 2017 season. Plenty of quality 1AA schools to choose from in southeast region.

He certainly can do that, but he also has a Red shirt available.

Wait. They lose 3 games and kids start jumping ship? What would have happened to this program if kids were allowed to transfer without penalty and they had significant scholarship reductions, and a multi-year bowl ban?

If the kid wants to transfer to PSU and the staff thinks they have a use for him that helps the team, I say have at it.

Big picture though - no idea why, as a junior, Hurd would want to (by choice) essentially wait 2 more years to go pro because of the transfer rule. His situation is quite puzzling so have to think there's much going on behind the scene.

I look at this from a different perspective. A highly regarded athlete needs to go from a crappy situation to a better one... and chooses PSU. That's a win for the program, and could help with recruiting. It could be worth the scholarship just for the PR.

What's not to like for him? Damn near everything is better about PSU when compared to Tennessee, except maybe the weather.

I recognize him as a 5-star prospect coming out of HS, but haven't really followed his college career. Is he a likely draft choice in 2017 if he decided to go that way? And at what position do the pros see him?

Or would he have a better shot a going 1 year to a Div-2 (or whatever they call the division where he would be immediately eligible) or 2 years to a D-1 school like PSU and establishing a body of work, maybe at a position other than RB?

I went to high school in TN and have friends that are die hard Vol fans. A couple of them told me that Hurd wanted to leave last year because he didn't like the system and Davis talked him into staying. They say that after the UGA game Hurd was complaining and Davis basically told him that if he didn't like it he could leave I guess the SC game was the last straw..so he quit. TIFWIW.

If the coaches vet him and think it's worth it take him and let him play TE because the drop off after Mike G. is pretty big IMO

He's not an NFL-quality RB. Honestly, he is too tall for the position and would get destroyed in the NFL. His best chance is exactly what he is doing... try your luck at TE or WR. He's got some great physical tools, but he is kind of a player without a position right now.

My guess is that he is not a 5-year college kid, and that he is looking to get into the NFL. If he is going to play again, he would want it to be next season, imo. So declaring after this season or one more is the most likely scenario. If he plays next season, he might want it to be at the new position he prefers so he can show some game film in that position to NFL scouts.
All just 'what ifs' on my part.

In preseason, he was a near consensus top 5 back in the SEC, if not nation. He's listed at 6'4" 240 lbs....not an ideal height for RB but certainly a bulldozer when he gets going.

Hypothetically, if PSU were a desirable fit from his end, we are loaded at WR but a TE or Hback-type would be intriguing if he's set on giving up RB (and I suppose looking at his pro prospects, a 6'4" RB does seem awkward for a pro RB).
