Franklin as an OC

Guys, let me start by saying I really like Franklin. He’s a great recruiter, a great person to send your kid to play for, but I think his gameday coaching and gameday management leaves a lot to be desired. I was full on board when he got hired, but now I sometimes wonder if he’s going to be the right guy to get us to that next level. I think he definitely needs quality, experienced co-ordinators by his side if he wants to succeed.

I know he was a QB, and made his name in coaching as a offensive guy. Every press conference he starts talking about the opponents scheme. He goes on and on about their scheme. When talking about the opponents defense, he’ll say stuff like “they run a cover 2 with a shade overtop the boundary, overload the box, odd personnel, attack man pressure, mix in odd 4-2-5, man under” etc. Almost like he’s trying to convince us that he’s a great offensive mind.

He was an OC at KState for ‘06&’07 and an OC at Maryland from ‘08-‘10. Here was his offense rankings in the nation.

2006 ranked 69th
2007 ranked 18th
2008 ranked 92nd
2009 ranked 98th
2010 ranked 29th

Going by his production as an OC he’s had 1 good year, 1 decent year, and 3 horrible years. I don’t think he’s a great X and O’s guy, maybe not even a good one...and the fact that he has a first year playcaller, who doesn’t seem even competent enough to put in some new wrinkles or new plays/packages of his own is very concerning. Especially for the guy who’s always taking about Scheme Scheme Scheme. He’s gotta make a change at OC and bring in an experienced offensive mind.

if by next level you mean beating OSU and Michigan half the time instead of a quarter the time, I think Franklin will get it done. If you mean Alabama an Clemson level, he might not be the guy and I’m not sure that guy is out there.

I’m not as sure as others that it is a Rahne issue. I will trust Franklin to figure it out. He wants to get to the playoffs more than any of us and if he feels Rahne isn’t cutting it he will make a change

I would happily take beating OSU and SCUM half the time.

Is it possible to bring in someone that would act as the "co-offensive coordinator"? Similar to what OSU currently does with Wilson and Day? As long as we meet the criteria for number of coaches on staff of course.

More concerning to me than the play calling is the OL. Whether due to scheme or talent, this positional group has struggled since Franklin got here. And we've recruited 14 guys who are three-star or better on the OL, excluding those who retired early, since 2015.

no he doesnt. The OC is not the problem.

Exactly what role does Franklin have with making plays? Does he call any or just set the tone for his OC.

My question comes higher up then Franklin. He always mentions what is needed from the administration to take this program to the next level. He talks about keeping his coaches and keeping them from lateral moves. Maybe this isn’t a Franklin problem, a Rahne problem, a Limegrover problem. Maybe these guys are just here in these positions because they are cheap and can’t find work at anything better. With what PSU is paying them, they might be the top talent we can get at those coaching positions. Maybe Franklin should be addressing the administration about getting elite payroll to use for the coaching staffs and in particular the coordinators. We have the talent, we need to pay elite coordinators and coaches to come here and win with it.

I think I heard Michigan last year had 3 coaches outside of Harbaugh making 7 figures. Ohio state has to have similar numbers. I am just gonna guess but I bet our coordinators make closer to half of what these top coordinators make them vs being closer to 7 figures.

Using those rankings, it tells me he took K State from 69 to 18 in two years, and UMD from 92 to 29 in three years. Considering those two schools, I'd say he did a pretty fair job.

Well then, let's get rid of him and get someone at the top of the list! We deserve only the very best!

Rest your weary head - cease your worrying - they are very well paid.

Yeah, assistant coaching salaries is not something that concerns me. If money is the issue, I'm sure someone will step up to get a guy paid.

I would happily take beating OSU and SCUM half the time.

This thinking is exactly why we will never be elite. Do you think Ohio State and Michigan would happily take beating Penn State half the time?

Heads would roll.

BTW - Somewhat related:

The shit is starting to float to the top of the bowl wrt ICA Financials.
Touched on it in my "twitter feed" from yesterday's BOT meetings (and will have a BLOG out in the next few days)

Along w CJF fairly consistently asking for more (the one thing I DON'T like about the guy)…. it appears that it may be coming to a head.
Is this a good thing

Michigan fans seem to be giddy right now - and think they are the premier CFB program in the nation...…. and they haven't beaten Ohio State but once in the last 15 years.
In this century, they haven't beaten both MSU and OSU in the same year - not even once .... and ALL the Wolveriners think they are "Elite" :)

So..... IDK

As a few of your posters have stated Franklin is INSECURE. PSU should make him recruiting coordinator which is the only thing he is actually good at.

I don't think Michigan is elite (yet) but we are "great" and working on being "elite". Does THAT sound familiar!

LOL 42-7. Franklin 1-3 against Harbaugh and 3-12 against MSU,OSU, Michigan and you claim other fan bases are delusional.

Still asking, were your linebackers available last Saturday because you know 2016. I forgot you were still suffering from sanctions then and the referees were against PSU, did I forget anything?

Michigan had twice as many penalties as PSU last Saturday.

McSorley missed a wide open receiver for a TD in the second half because he had happy feet after being hit by Michigan's Dline repeatedly.

Harbaugh let go of assistant coaches and hired great replacements. Lets see if Franklin does and if PSU will back it up with the $$ required.

Michigan and I would assume many other Big 10 fan bases are very happy Franklin is your head coach and hope he stays for years.

Harbaugh can't develop QB's (Andrew Luck, Colin K, Jake Ruddock, now Shea Patterson), Harbaugh can't win anything (Orange Bowl, 3 NFL divisional championships). Is he quirky, yes, but he is one hell of a coach.

Please give Franklin a raise and keep him forth e next 10 years.

1-2 more years before this criticism has validity.
