Freaking shame that nbc isn’t covering any wrestling in prime time.

I couldn’t believe that nbc didn’t show any wrestling in prime time last night. I didn’t see any mention of the best performance by a USA wrestling team ever.
With gables’s last second win this am perhaps they will say something tonight although it is Friday night and less viewers are watching. This for a sport that should always be in the Olympics.

The did have it at 8pm last night on the USA Network. Well, it may have been the Olympic Channel because I was doing a lot of channel flipping. Either way, It was prime time, just not NBC.

If it wasn’t for wrestling I would never have known about the Olympic channel. Most people don’t know where it is. Lol

As stated in the other thread, NBC Prime Time last night showed the last 45 seconds of DT's match as well as the celebration.

so they did show it for a whole minute? What time I dvrd prime time and I didn’t see it. Guess they didn’t show much. Man they showed more Chinese diving than what is transpiring for USA wrestling. The greatest run ever.

No love for wrestling, that's a fact. DT had 60 seconds of air time in his Today Show interview.

At least TMS got a few minutes.

On my comcast, it's only been "unlocked" for the olympics, but during the rest of the year shows a ton of stuff i'd watch in a second (biathlon, cyclocross)

and also sad that these matches - not just these US successes, but the Russian's last minute wins too - played out in a relatively empty building.

In a related vein, as I was cooking dinner last night, i had the 50k walk on. Yeah, they look funny, and it's hard not to chuckle. But my god, these guys are walking at a 7:30 pace for 4 hours! Guys were dropping like flies in the heat, and you could see the agony of the last 10k on everyone. Very compelling. Naturally, the Olympics is doing away with the 50k.

It's about ratings.

We watch the NCAA Tournament --> ESPN adds extra mats and adds Friday night.

If Olympic Wrestling drew the same ratings, NBC would show more of it and in better time slots.

Really. Diving was on again tonight. Who the hell watches the Chinese divers. Not one word mentioned tonight about Stevenson win. Just crazy.

The masses get their wrestling elsewhere, plus they will never be able to understand freestyle scoring and rules, since most of the refs can't either.

NBC loves

They also showed Helen Maroulis winning bronze and mentioned that she won the 1st Gold for US women in Rio. There was something short in between the mention of DT and her bit. Both were short, but they were on Primetime. My guess is we didn't see it tonight because of full game coverage of Men's Basketball. I was a little bummed too, but generally unplanned pieces come in gaps between events. Tonight there wasn't a lot of time going from Diving, Track and Field and Basketball.

I would have liked it if NBC had given wrestling 1 hour or so and had all the freestyle men wrestling gold medal matches
back to back! Just me but that would have been cool rather than have them spaced out.

I also wondered about the scheduling. Is this typically how they are scheduled for Olympics, or was there some COVID reasoning to spacing out the competition? It seems a couple of days of GR, then women then FS would help fans follow along and catch more of the action.

NBC doesn't control the Olympic schedule. This is a world event broadcast in many countries and in many time zones. This is bigger than NBC, the US and wrestling.

They have one arena with three mats. If they stacked all gold medal matches together there would be huge gaps/days in between matches for the wrestlers. This is done the same way in boxing too.

One arena, 3 mats, math...

They did pretty much go from Greco to women's to men's FS, with some overlap.

Diving is huge in the Olympics, one of the highest rated sports. This goes back to what I said in the other thread. Love ya man, but wrestling fans need to understand, if you want the sport to grow, get to prime time, you need advertising and major sponsors. Wrestling has neither to a large extent.

I've seen all sorts of wrestling fans rip on the casual fan. For what? Your ego? Your ego is what keeps new folks out of the sport. Jesus, I was never a diver, but I love the sport. I grew up watching cliff diving on ABC, and it sure as hell wasn't some exclusive club. You want to grow the sport, educate the casual fan, don't chastise them. It's not hard to do. My wife, who's French, became the biggest PSU wrestling fan you've ever seen. My friends wives have as well. To me, the fastest way to grow the sport is on the women's side. Tamyra will get far more sponsorship money than Stevesen. I'll bet she'll be on a Wheaties box first. She's beyond marketable.

Awesome. I'll take it. Something is better than nothing. And at least they showed a Women's FS dominant medal victory on a late Saturday morning. Maybe get the sport some new (female) fans.

At least they covered every wrestling match live. I DVR'd everything and watched it when I woke up. Compared to track and field which has been abysmally terrible. In track they wouldn't cover any major track events live and instead you had to watch them 12-15 hours later in prime time. Good luck not getting the results spoiled for you before then. You literally had to stay off the internet and not tune in to the radio or TV the whole day. I had several events finals spoiled for me before I could watch them on TV. NBC Olympic coverage was terrible overall IMO. NBC can suck a bag of d**ks as far as I'm concerned.

This year it was spread out over seven days. According to Wikipedia, wrestling was spread out over eight days in Rio & London. The main difference was that Rio & London had three days of Greco, two days of Women’s Free, then three days of Men’s Free. This year they still had three days of Greco & Men’s Free, but spread the Women’s free out over all seven days. Or at least I think that is what happened with the whole time zone/date line thing.

The same hall was used for half of the taekwondo competitions. Don’t know how much that played into scheduling or not.

Most of the running events and many field events were live on the Peacock, which is free for Xfinity customers.

Except NBC television rights is the budget.

I just was grateful to be able to watch any of the Olympic wrestling, when it was looking iffy for the Olympics to even happen in Japan this year.

I honestly feel if the main networks just gave it a chance, they’s be surprised at the (positive) results and it would grow with time. Wrestling is exciting
