My wife and I decided to get away for our anniversary. So, we went to Charlottesville on Friday afternoon and had a very nice dinner Friday night.
We didn't watch any news Friday night or Saturday morning. On Saturday morning around 11:00am, we drove down to the downtown mall to have a brunch. We walked around and noticed that there were a lot of police and helicopters one block over but it was uphill so we couldn’t see what was going on. The majority of the restaurants were closed. It was a very strange environment.
My wife said, “there must be a 5k or some kind of parade this morning”. I said, “there are a lot of police for a 5k or parade”. Then we decided, “it must be something out of the ordinary, so, let’s go check it out!"
We walked right up to the s-storm right before it flashed up. There were people in full fatigues with assault rifles, neo-Nazi flags, etc. We were in shock to say the least and realized quickly that nothing good was going to happen. We left immediately and walked back to our car two blocks away from where the crazy person ran over people.
As we tell our kids, every experience is an opportunity to learn - check the white supremacists websites or at minimum the news before you plan a getaway!
While we fully support the right of anyone to protest and march, the thing that shocked us the most was that people could walk down a street with an assault rifle, pepper spray, baton, etc...
