All those people put solar on their homes because they want to save the environment and save on California's outrageous electricity rates. They thought they had cheap, reliable electric power.
But guess what? When the utility shuts off the grid, these homes have no power! Seems that the systems were installed so that the power goes into the grid. The amount is metered and the home's meter will run backwards thus crediting the home owner for the power. At night the home is powered by the grid.
Because the house is connected, when the grid is shut down, the home gets no electricity. So almost all those 'solar powered' homes have no power now even during the daytime when the grid is down.
But the homes that have batteries to run at night can run their homes when the grid is down but these are very few since batteries for these systems are very expensive.
Lots of green Californians are pretty red right now.
