As David Taylor achieves success at Okie Dokie, other major college programs will adopt a similar strategy.

Here are a couple of possibilities I see:

Dake to Iowa and he’ll take Yanni (and his legal team) with him.

AB to Maryland (after he wins his gold medal), and he’ll take David Carr with him.

Any thoughts?

Nick Lee to Indiana?

Why wouldn't Taylor eventually be the replacement? Let him get seasoning at OSU and then he eventually takes over when Cael's ready to do something else.

Most of his ties and his wife's ties are to the Midwest/PA region and the PSU / NLWC programs. I get that he's building his own program in Stillwater, but the PSU job is the best college job in the entire sport. Sorry OSU fans...

I think Nick could be a future replacement for Cael 👍

DT is building his coaching reputation and tree in OK. He ain't coming back, even though by ALL accounts he maintains a great relationship with the PSU staff. Promises made. Promises kept.

IMO, Nick Lee has the perfect attitude and outlook to be “next”. I might have said Nolf too, but it seems his calling is to develop Texas into a major wrestling state and send its top recruits our way.

Hopefully Cael's successor is around 10-12 years old -- like Smith's successor was when Smith was Cael's current age.
Something tells me Cael’s not going to mail it in for a decade like JS was doing. They were still recruiting well, but general oversight went to shit

Yeah Spencer Lee to Fresno State when they start the sport again for the 3rd time. Then Fresno will have three good years and cut the sport again in the middle of the fourth year after it becomes clear that they won’t be chasing a national championship title.

Not going to speculate as to who might eventually succeed Cael. I will say, though, that whoever it ultimately turns out to be has my deepest professional sympathy. Psychomasochistic tendencies might be helpful when assuming his new job, which will be a singular example of the term "following a legend", involving a program with pretty much only one direction to go performance wise, and a fanbase with nearly impossible-to-meet expectations in the other-.

I believe Wisconsin is cutting the number of wrestling scholarships to 5, if that is true, no way Askren takes the Wisconsin job. He is not going to take a job when you have no chance to be elite due to lack of resources.

A scholarship is just another desk chair in a class room. Really no cost to the college.

I have said that for years, but of course universities don’t really look at it this way. They are not adding teaching staff or building new class rooms due to a few extra wrestling scholarships for tuition.

An athletic scholarship actually is a cost to the college. Tapping into an endowed scholarship is a transfer from wealth to revenue. A fully-paid tuition (be it paid by the student or by external sources) generates the same revenue while retaining the college's wealth.

But for a school like Wisconsin-Madison with a $4B annual budget and $3.8B endowment, it's the definition of a marginal cost.

They can just accept more students to cover all scholarship.

In terms of the overall budget you are correct. If Wisconsin reduces wrestling scholarships from 9.9 to 5 and it costs on average $30K a year to attend UW, then that is roughly $150K that Wisconsin saves assuming that those slots are taken by wrestlers/students paying full freight.

I don’t think Spencer will ever be a head coach at the college level. I haven’t seen any real leadership from him.

I look for him to be named as an assistant at Iowa in the next year or so.

Yeah.... I sure as hell hope so!!

Absolutely. It's a revenue issue. Scholarships "cost" nothing but they do reduce revenue. Like the US govt printing more money, schools can always add an extra few admissions to cover it.

At least the Brands Bros have some charisma. Iowa appointing Spencer as the next HC and not taking a serious run at Dake or Burroughs would be a terrible miscalculation

This may not go over well but I think Spencer is too self focused to be a great head coach.
I completely agree. Two examples come to mind. He didn’t seem willing to help Ayala as a training partner, and after Ramos pinned him, he quit on his team.

In contrast, Coach Lee became Zane’s training partner after Zane beat him, and he wrestled back for third at NCAAs after he lost. That’s what leaders do. Chop wood and carry water. He is going to be a great coach 💪

My opinion: when Cael can’t get on the mat and “school” these youngsters, he will call it a day.

If this is true...5 scholarships...no wonder the Badgers have looked so bad recently. Not sure I even recognize anyone in their lineup, and they recently barely slipped by Bucknell, followed by a loss to Lock Haven. Sad for a once really solid B10 program. If they can't support the full scholarship allotment what the hell does their NIL program look like?

Yeah, but not when the university looks at it as if that same chair can hold a full paying $50k year non athlete.

Cost, maybe not, opportunity cost, yep.

That would only make sense if they turn students away. Do they limit how many students they can have that closely? I drought 10 extra student is the issue.

Why does everyone think Cael is leaving so soon. What job does he take other than PSU? USA Wrestling gig? It's not paying anything close to PSU and NLWC is sort of pseudo running FS right now.
