I was looking over the roster and he was the last number. I think I heard his name before, but I had no idea we had an OT - sized punter.
I watched some of his HS highlights, which mostly consisted of kickoff’s going through the back of the end zone and punts going over the heads of returners.
Interesting prospect to say the least.

If so, either 247 messed up his HS weight or the dude has added 80 pounds to his frame in 1 year. Hoping it's the former.

The funny thing is that Gabe was a 5 star kicker and he’s a walk on. Kickers get no respect yet they play such an important role in the game of football.

It’s 2021. We should have some affirmative action! ‘Kicker Scholarships Matter’. Let’s require football teams to give 3 scholarships to special teams players every year. #equality

I looked at his highlights, and I can believe his listed weight on our roster.

Punter and kickers are important and they do deserve scholarships. Problem is that they are "ranked" by the camps/schools to which they pay to go. Aside from that, the evaluations are not based on game situations.

Unless you have a "can't miss type of punter or kicker" make them walk on and earn their ship. As PSU has shown there are plenty of kids willing to walk on and try and make the team as a kicker.

A "can't miss" kicker is the best kind!!!

Hyped kickers make me think of Russell Erxleben who was drafted in the first round as a P/K by the Saints. It was a wasted pick for someone who had a less than average career. He later wound up in jail.

A frequent talent among NFL players, no matter where they were drafted.

reminds me of Quinn Nordin or Dave kimball for us. Both #1 in the country and then basically are average. Both got a shot in the nfl though, which is basically the goal.

excellent point that evals are unreliable and yet their role is important. ability to find diamond in the rough kickers has to be important for any staff. kickers can easily change a season. looking back on the difference that Blake Gilliken made for us = in one year we went from punts costing us to punts flipping the field - and he saved the day in the OSU game by taking the safety. Davis was a FG kicker who I don't think was highly recruited but had a near perfect season. Joey J was also a major weapon on KO's until something happened with him with health. you really appreciate good kicking after you go through a couple years of kicking costing games.

Not tonight, dear, I have a headache.

Quick update on this kid. Yes, he is real - he played in the Big 33 game and is from a supportive family. He is taking a RS this year and has been able to cut some weight once he got to campus.

It will be fun to watch him grow - hopefully he can keep our touchback streak alive after Stout leaves. Quite the intimidating physique for a K/P, haha
