He said, "I didn't know that wrestling's supposed to be fun." I know the Corn Eagle message board is all wound up about Penn Staters talking about having fun, but why the Heck should it not be fun? I won't argue with Gable's results on the mat in his day, but no fan of any team can argue that Sanderson's fun, loose, grateful mantra isn't what's working the best now. The talk of slush funds, loose morals, mixed teams and more by the nuts (and every team has them) is an embarrassment to Chief, WildTurk and the other sensible Iowa fans.

Jealousy, pettiness, and self-pity.

Is that really what Gable said? Don't believe it. Why do anything if you don't enjoy it? Crazy... it's not a prison sentence.

No one forces you to wrestle unless you live in Eastern Europe or the Middle East.

You wrestle because you enjoy it.

I heard him say it too. Couldn't believe it. I'm sure it's being rationalized on HR

Eh ...

I relate that quote more to Gable's Baby Boomer generation.

The older folks who needed that grinding 35-year factory or office job for so much of their self esteem.

Baby Boomers can't think like or understand Millenials.

But Cael understands today's kids. Gable doesn't understand.

He absolutely did say it during the Billy Baldwin, Gable Stevenson interview.

Sorry, are you referring to Dan Gable or Gable Steveson?

It is easier to work harder if you are having fun doing it.

Dan Gable would have made whatever adjustments he would have had to, to maintain his success.

If Cael was continually kicking his ass in recruiting, coaching and sucesses, Gable would be picking Cael's brain every chance he had.

Dan said it.

Actually I was more impressed with Baldwin asking Dan Gable what he thought of Cael and his success, with a kid who just committed to Minnesota standing right next to him.

It's fun because your next year roster is :1,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,7,10
It'd be a lot less fun if the roster was #15-20 guys instead.

Yeah, but Minny has the best assistants. :D Although LP claims one is the worst 4 time AA in NCAA history.

You do have a point. While still finishing first the team competition would be closer and we would have to wait a little longer to rub a goofer's nose in it.

it's all good. that's what i was trying to say also

It's all good.

As an Gen-X'er, I try to have empathy for the Baby Boomers & Millenials, and what they hold as their values and priorities.

But I definitely think both groups are a little outta whack from time to time. Lol

Speaking of that. Did you save me one of the 2017 NCAA wrestling champions Minnesota Goofer tee shirts. Did you guys at least get the colors, blue and white, right?

.

I relate it to old time Catholic religion. In order to be recognized as being more reverent, you had to kneel down a lot and not eat meat on Friday. Like that makes you holier?

Ok, now that I injected religion into the discussion, how about someone giving a political example?

This is ridiculous. Is it more fun because of THAT? Or more likely it is we are having that level of success. BECAUSE it is more fun. Look at the corners during matches. Listen to Cael. Listen to the kids. They are empowered to be grateful and learn commitment and responsibility to themselves and their team.

He lets them loose on a mat. Try, experiment and if it doesn't work....so what? So what?? In the end, he's breeding confidence and comfort. He literally puts into practice what Gabe Dean wrote.

The success and fun is due to this, it is not fun just because we are winning.

What is 1,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,7,10?

Talent goes where they will flourish. Iron sharpens iron. There is more going on in that room than B1G and NCAA titles.

These kids want and aspire for international competition. What they are now doing just prepares them for their ultimate goal. That's the process. That's the buy in. That's the "have fun with these matches" mentality.

A loss is a loss but that is not the end all.

Enjoy the ride. That's what's so different. Ryan gets it. Not sure Smith or Brands do but they are catching on. They better or they will be left behind.

I think you could see it in his near-apathy about not winning the Big10 tourney.

He has these kids focused on what matters during the season, so of course the moment won't be too big for them and they'll keep doing what got them there. Not sure why this is so challenging for TnT among others to understand.

Jeez, is he a "get off my lawn" kind of guy now?

I'm turning into one of those guys, so don't knock it.

Seriously, I think Gable was half joking with that statement. I suspect the other half goes back to the "Iowa Way" mindset; i.e., we will out-work you, out-tough you, and out-desire you, and eventually grind you down and break your will. There is no room for fun with that mentality.

I am more of a "powder my balls guy"...in case you wanted to know.

On a serious note, a good PSU wrestling fan I used to work with (His son wrestled for PSU before Cael) said that he engaged Gable one on one at a hotel he was staying at during a wrestling tournament.

He said that Gable was "very intense and serious about Iowa wrestling." He said he was very calm and reserved in his dialogue, but extremely serious in his message and tone. FWIW...

Dan Gable said it during a segment where both he and Gable Stevenson were being interviewed by Billy Baldwin.

Yes, he said its a good thing (fun) and that getting your hand raised is fun and that PSU has been doing it A LOT (emphasis Dan's).

He also said (I'm paraphrasing) what makes PSU so tough is that the PSU wrestlers are unconventional (as compared to his era) and that they come at you from so many different ways. I don't think he actually said this but he did allude to the thought that Cael is revolutionizing wrestling.

Now, here's my own thought...Thank God (sorry...not faith dig...honest injun) Cael had the vision to come to PSU and do this. If he had stayed a Cyclone, the east coast would have not been as exposed to his exciting brand of wrestling...no NCAAs in NYC, and Philly. And Ok State and Iowa would keep rolling on.

Agree Ptom, he is revolutionizing the sport and has lit up the east coast and the country as a whole. It's so good for a great sport. Now worlds is expanding weight classes. I hope the NCAA does as well. Still like a 220 class.

Nevertheless, it's no coincidence that wrestling popularity, accept on BTN, has really elevated since 2009.

PSU wrestlers are exciting to watch because they go for the big one. Screw the 7 minutes and gas tank thing. They are looking for the fall. But they can also out last you cause their conditioning is so good. They don't cut weight like some other schools.

It was an odd interview: It seemed like every time Gable complemented PSU and Cael, he had to counter it with what his own persona would say...

Examples: and I am paraphrasing....

"What they do isn't really wrestling, it isn't really basic wrestling, but you never know where they are coming from or what they are going to do..."

"They all have fun, when they go out there they are having fun, BUT I DON'T KNOW if wrestling is supposed to be fun".

It was like two persona's arguing with each other, lmao. It reminded me of the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other, having an argument, except with the Hawkeye logo on one side, and the Nittany Lion logo on the other side.

The fun we have as fans is more or so due to the level of sucess the team has. Which is the part of the point I made to the goof in regards to his continous wailing about PSU's superior recruits. The other point I was making is PSU's staff is good enough they whoop you with their's and could switch you players and still beat their's.

Nothing in my mind ridiculous about that post at all.
