I hear Dan Gables quote "once you wrestled everything in life is easy" I wanna in look at everything I life. Was Pearl harbor easier? Was 9/11 easier? Was any of the controversies easier,? The shut down of the NCAA is trivial to any of the before mentiode . I usually lurk on this board and was wondering what the rest of you thought despite being wrestling fans. I am torn because of my wrestling allegiance and wanting our wrestlers to shine. But at the risk of being the target of the board I wanted to ask

And I realize he did not quote that outside the wrestling world.

I think him saying everything in life would be easy was overstating it, as there are tragedies in life that nothing can prepare you for. But, spending years at a sport; where hard work, self discipline, self sacrifice, and dealing with a lot of pain and pushing through it; prepares you for ordinary life in a way that many other experiences, including other sports, does not.

It’s a pithy quote. The context and presumptions are not made explicit using “whereas” and “notwithstanding”. If you want to compare Gable’s apple, wrestling, with your own orange-colored cloud, “Pearl Harbor”, then that’s beyond the scope.

But I’ll play if you at least make your orange-colored cloud into a substantial, definite thing that is at least an orange fruit.

Wrestling is a sport in which a wrestler tries to defeat his opponent in single combat. What do you mean by “Pearl Harbor”?

Pearl Harbor for whom? For a Japanese dive bomber pilot who tries to take off on time and fly in formation and drop his bomb accurately? For an American sailor who has to stand there unarmed and get killed? What are you asking people to compare?

Don’t be sloppy in your thinking!

My intention was not to compare but to bring light to the shut down. I wanna see marches like Joseph va Marinelli as you do.

Apple vs an "orange colored cloud". This is some fine work Dogwelder!

I remember Patton’s writing about his liberation of the Lippizaner horses and trainers. On the one hand, the trainers should have been soldiers because the war effort should be more important. On the other hand, Patton did not want to see their unique art die. So, both thoughts were true in his one brain. Art and material living live on parallel yet overlapping planes. Or, per Neil Gaiman, we see facets of the underlying thing. Art and material living can each be 100% valuable, and don’t need to compete to split up the same 100%. Give onto Caesar and all that.

That’s what your posts make me think of.

Mr welder you are correct but I am an older user that.doesnt know how to do tha . Could you help a 72 year old man to do so?
On my phone, when I look at my own post, there is a button showing a wrench drawing. I tap that, and then there are choices that pop up. I would tap the “Delete” choice. I then leave the reason for deletion blank, out of laziness. And then I hit the “Delete Post” confirmation button.

I'll say this about Gable. I've had the chance to speak with him several times, and he's a really decent guy who is always approachable. Sure, he's 110% Hawk, but any of us who put the kind of effort he did into building a program would feel the same way. As a sport, we're lucky to have guys like him as role models.

I am closer to 50 then 40 and wrestled 1/3 of my life. Wrestling was the escape from the hard stuff "life". Life TF wrestling. When I watch my child who has cystic fibrosis fight for her life. I don't think to myself "this is easy cause I wrestled".

Some are reading much, much too much into Mr. Gable's quote. I have always believed that what he meant was that if you wrestle, everything else is EASIER.

I am a big believer in this! There are not many sports where you stand alone and face an opponent without any real weapon except your mind, body, and spirit. When you fail, particularly when you get pinned, there is nothing you can image could feel worse. But there are worse things in life. Way, way worse things. Wrestling teaches you to pick yourself up and get back on the saddle. Deal with adversity. Control what you can control. Work your ass off. It makes life much EASIER but not necessarily easy. It builds more character than any other sport I've ever played by far.
